Anyone afraid POTC 2 might break any Spidey Records?

POTC could very well break 400 million by Sunday, setting a new record in terms of fastest movie to 400 million.

Please, oh please topple Titanic.

Wow, you people really like talking about Box Office numbers. You should see the Superman Box Office thread, it's like the second coming.

I should know. ;)

It doesn't matter, how many records POTC will break this year. Spider- Man 3 will break all Records next year again.

I really doubt that POTC2 will make more than Titanic and it doesn't deserve to beat it either imo.

The Titanic was mediocre at best. The only reason it did so well was because of the pre-teen and teen girl set dragging their boyfriends to it.

Well POTC2 was just a mindless popcorn flick imo. Seriously it seemed like they were just making things up as they went along. Titanic was actually a good film with a story.

Actually, Pirates is at $366 million right now. But still, it's not getting even another $100 million, let alone $200 million.

Actually POTC2 has made $366,387,380 so far. Still not going to beat Titanic though.

The thing I really find most surprising about POTC2 is just how much the public likes it. Personally, I find myself more in agreement with the (negative) review given by most critics.

Same here.

potc2 was awesome, the very definition of summer movie.

some critics were looking too deep into it. it's supposed to entertain and that's exactly what it's been doing. it's going to be interesting how the final "3's" do next year

Very much agreed. Critiques so often look too deep into summer movies. Pirates was never meant to be a larger than the universe mind-numbing/heart-melting testament to cinema. It had one purpose: to be a fun, swashbuckling rollercoaster ride. The screenwriters pretty much come out and say that in their Pirates1 commentary...

Anyways, fun tends to draw out the masses and that's what the POTC movies are great at doing. The Spider-Man movies different things to worry about, namely depth of characters, etc. -- which needs to be balanced with humor and action, which I think was too lacking in the last film. This time, if we see more of Spider-Man in action (i.e. wearing the mask, webslinging, cracking jokes at the bad guys -- you know, that mindless fun stuff) to balance out the drama, it should be enough to bring back the thrillseeking masses. I saw the first movie three times in the theaters, despite cheesy CG, costumes and lines. I only saw the the second movie once in the theater. It was the best superhero movie I'd ever seen. SM2 was extraordinarily good, but like a rich cake, not something I wanted to see again right away. The movie was more about Peter Parker and the dramas of his life -- great, superbly executed, but not a roller coaster ride.

Those are just my personal thoughts/observations. More fun to balance out the drama in the next S-M movie and it could pose an even greater threat at the Summer box office.

Critics got it right. As a movie, POTC2 isnt all that great. But it is entertaining. That doesn't mean it should get a higher grade though.

Maybe it shouldn't, but it still rakes in the dough. Though.

pirates will be at 400m midweek next week...and may just barely surpass Shrek 2 in final domestic take by labor day weekend.

ya,lol.

what a funny thread to look back on:rolleyes: ...oh by the way...POTC2 will pass SM2's take by Saturday.

POTC2 doesn't deserve to beat Spidey records, or make as much money as it did. Pirates had legions of fans waiting for DMC? I doubt it. The only reason why DMC made so mcuh was because Summer 2006 was seriously lacking in big movies.
