are Americans stupid

We should think at who has something to gain from having so many ignorant people populating the country.
Why do attitudes like "we just don't care" prevail?

-It helps contribute to mindless consumerism
-It helps keep people in power
-It helps the rich get richer and the poor get poorer
-Mass ignorance is vital to control in a free country
-It makes gaining support for awful things easier
-It makes ignoring important issues easier

That basically says how things are.All those points are true..do you hate being the only smart person,or the only person who notices these things?

I think you have that in reverse order.

You mean smart people working for dumb people? That is interesting,it would explain how America is now..

How can there be six pages of discussion on this topic? Statistically, yes, Americans are generally dumber than the rest of the developed world. It's a consequence of unbridled capitalism/self-centeredness.

When it comes to the media, the stereotype is that Americans are self-centered idiots that are proud of being so. Other countries are viewed as either being cultured or too third-world to even know what time of day it is.

Which is the reason that some people form opinions of Americans without ever meeting one. Because they saw it on TV.

That video just made me throw up in my mouth a little bit. While you will find some of that in every country you sure do find a higher proportion of it here. It's almost like the masses here can just cover their ears and say "LALALALALA!!!! The rest of the world doesn't exist!!" :(

New England needs to seceed from the Union. I think there are slightly fewer of that particular breed of American up here...

nah i like america even though lately they've been trippin. cant wait to see bush go.

I tell you when I went to the USA to see my partners family the locals of the state were so nice and friendly. Yes a few dumb questions, like - how far is London from your house kinda thing. But nothing insane.

However while my American partner is over here in the UK all she gets is crap for being American.

People in the UK are the worst people I have met ever so far. Not open minded at all.....and I was born in that **** hole.

If he's an american I suppose that would make him one.

The "why should I care?" argument does have some validity, though you almost always look like an ignorant ass when you make it. Sure, it's nice and all to know where Sri Lanka and Iran is on the map, but in most people's day to day lives it's not necessary (and as to the question of whether or not this is a result of an effort to keep the masses in control; I doubt that knowledge of that nature will ever be more than trivial for the majority). Even things I should know and care about (like that whole Presidential Campaign nonsense going on now) aren't as pressing to me as say, paying my rent, finding a new job, feeding myself, and yes, even hanging out with friends. Those things, while important on a large scale, do need to be placed on the back-burner in the smaller, personal scale.

My 2 cents.

Most Americans just don't care and don't know anything about the things going on outside of their communities.

Now to say that all don't care or know about other worldly conflicts is stupid, and not true. I can't say that I'm one of them, but seriously. I don't know the rate at which we learn, but so far, we run our society fairly well. So that means something.

We may not be proper speakin' folks, but hey.

but all irishmen ARE drunks!

Oh He, Doesn't smell like Irish spring
And he never taught me anything
But still I slap my chest and sing
Of my drunken Irish dad

Oh, His face looks like a railroad map
And he never shuts his frigg'n trap
But all the ladies catch the clap
From your drunken Irish dad

Ask a
Hennessey, Tennessee, Morrison, Shaunesy, Riven and Rudy
They'll tell you the same.
Mc Nolte, Morooney, Potter and Clooney
They feel the same mixture of pride and of shame

Finnegan, Hannegan, Cally and Fannigan
Look to the ground when their Dad passes bye
Pafferty, Rafferty, Joyson or Lafferty
Fight for his honour and then start to cry

(Amusing fight sounds)

Oh, We Irish lads are all in-firm
And our moods infect us like a germ
Cause were all a spawn of a pickled sperm
(And we don't tan well either)
From a drunken Irish Dad

I think Americans are stupid, but I don't think it is just America. I think the world is gradually getting stupid.

But Americans were stupid before stupid was cool.:o

Sure, basic geography may be trivial, but you've got to look at the wider scope of ignorance.

America is supposed to be a free country, but your not really free if your minds been shut. Your not really living in a democracy if your not participating in that democracy.

People are made to be overwhelmed by the system they are apart of, the moments they aren't in the system, (school, work, jail, etc.) they are busy distracting themselves with the vast array of diversions set in place for them.

I think widespread ignorance does indeed have dire consequences.

Ignorance in America is a choice.........thats what freedom is all about....*smiles*
