Arnold Is Back for Terminator 5 - Part 1

Was Tom Hardy's name in the mix for Reese?

Heh I know, I was being sarcastic. ;)

I've lost track of the number of alternate timelines in the Terminator universe where someone is sent back to protect someone else...

Exactly. A terminator going back to protect the female character now! How revolutionary!

It's an alternate timeline, though - continuity preserved!! (and franchise further diluted...)

Don't want to derail the thread, but I expect every other classic/blockbuster franchise to embrace the "It's an alternate universe and not a remake!" strategy that the Abrams ST seems to have popularized.

Ugh.

And cue the endless whining about it...

Ya I would prefer just a full on reboot, but as long as the film is good I can go with it. I'm actually now more interested to see how they would try to handle a "alternate" universe.

What are they going to do? The first 3 movies pretty much have that simple plot line.

Is that at me for making the comment or at the trend I referenced?

Eh, like I said I'm not trying to derail, but it's pretty clear that alternate timelines allow filmmakers and studios to market the new franchise films as avoiding pitfalls of traditional remakes.

Plus I didn't whine about it. I just said I expect the other major franchises to follow suit, as it's proven to be a popular and successful approach.

I fail to see anything about Emilia Clarke that says "Sarah Connor". And as someone else said, she's tiny. It's hard to picture her kicking ass the way Linda Hamilton did in T2. This isn't like Game of Thrones, where it doesn't matter how tiny she is because she's got an army and dragons to back her up.

I like Nicholas Hoult but not for Kyle Reese. Taylor Kitsch is meh. I'd rather have Anton Yelchin back than either of them.

The only person rumored who sounded right-ish to me was Tom Hardy as adult John Connor, and clearly that isn't happening. Jason Clarke might be fine, but there are other people besides Hardy I'd rather have.

And Arnold is just too old. They're trying to have their cake and eat it too. It's either a "wholly original take", or it isn't. Desperately hanging on to Arnold no matter how old he is just sounds sad at this point.

so is Arnold really going to come back for this??

I just don't get the Emilia is too small. They make Tom Cruise look big lol. And Linda was taller, but in T1 she was not some huge woman, she was a small little petite thing. Sarah was never suppose to be a huge intimidating person, what made her intimidating is she did not look like she could be come that, especially in T1 and make it a "Woah" thing in T2, and the thing is we don't even know if they are going to make her full on psycho down the road. No where was I thinking...Sarah needs to be big. She was a small package that was unexpectedly deadly, that was her shtick.

Ya that's still my one reservation...is how are they going to deal with the Arnold thing. Other then that I'm satisfied.

Arnold is just too old to keep trying to pull these kinds of things off. He's too old to be taken seriously in his attempts to recapture his '80s action superstar glory days, and he's not good enough of an actor to do anything else. Basically he needs to just accept reality and go away.

yeah........and what he did in his personal life ( fathering a child with the maid and all that ), for me at least, that was such a huge turn off, that I lost all respect for him.

now I have no real desire to see his movies, and that's more of an issue for me than his age.

I just think.....if you're gonna reboot..........do a clean reboot with a brand new cast.

I agree with a lot of this. The only thing that gives me hope is that Megan has something up her sleeve to make it work. But I too am weary of this aspect.

I'm just not sure it's fair to hold Emilia Clarke to T2 Hamilton standards when it seems like they'll be going for the T1/1984 time period.

But I agree on Arnold. He's tooooo far past his prime for this.

Ya Linda was not buff in T1 or big, she was a tiny thing. A little taller yes, but she was the damsel in distress. It was not until T2 that she became more of the heroine.

I still enjoy some of his earlier films, but yeah...that ticked me off, too.

Agreed. For example, "Superman Returns" could've been a much better film if Singer hadn't relied so much on the Donner era references. That's one of many reasons why "Man of Steel" is so much better.

I really wanted a proper sequel to "Terminator: Salvation", but since they're doing a reboot, I say they should mix it up. A really great idea would be going with Cameron's original premise of the killer hiding in an ordinary shape, instead of a bodybuilder.
