I just finished this. People say that this is like a skin of Black Flag, and I was just like great because I love Black Flag, and I want to play another game similar to it. So I was really excited to play this. I miss hunting and using the ship for battle and travel in Black Flag. I was just ready to do them again. I don't think this is exactly like Black Flag, especially when this one is divided into three maps, there's gliding, there's more variation to things to climb, there are hunting challenges and the collectibles here are a bit different compare to Black Flag. Though they could have changed the look of the hud and the main menu instead of just changing the color and the background. I liked that most of the locations in the naval maps are already accessible very early unlike in Black Flag. The maps are huge! I expected North Atlantic to be smaller than Black Flag's map, and I thought the other two maps were just big cities. But when I got to River valley, I was like wow because there are a lot more areas in there compare to North Atlantic despite the map being smaller in size. I like that River valley also exists here for variety of having non-snowy locations. Though I prefer North Atlantic just because I love the snowy setting. I liked that Shay can't stay in the water for so long. I liked that I can destroy the icebergs. I love seeing so many penguins. The icecaves and the locations with a shipwreck look cool. The graphics of the game look great even though the texture tend to look grainy at times. I also prefer the animals here. There are also more weapons compare to Black Flag. Basically, this has more variety. Unlike Black Flag, it has taking down gang hqs, the city renovations and getting money from the bank. The whole thing just seems bigger.
I really took my time here. It took me like 5 days, just to finish the first sequence because I visited all the available locations, finding the collectibles and completing side activities. The collectibles here are a bit harder to get compare to Black Flag. Like even the ones that are just located in uncharted, like it was more challenging and time consuming to get them all. I also really tried to max out the ship's armour and just buying all the upgrades that were available to buy. So I really destroyed a lot of ships very early, just to get a lot of those materials needed for the upgrades. One of the things I didn't finish in Black Flag is that I didn't fully upgrade the ship. So here in Rogue, it became one of my priorities.
I really took my time with the main missions especially they were only twenty five missions. I was really intrigued by the premise of this, though the execution of Shay leaving the Assassins was a bit cheesy. I don't think I prefer Shay over Edward, Arno and Ezio but I was intrigued with the direction of the story. His three ex-Assassin pals, the ones who gave him training lessons at the start, were interesting as well especially Hope. I love the Lisbon mission! The Paris mission was really interesting and I loved how it set up Unity. The missions in which Shay had to kill his ex allies were brutal and kinda sad. The missions were usually divided into 2 to 3 parts, so they weren't short. But still, 25 missions aren't a lot. After I finished all the side quests in more than a week, I was kinda hoping I would do a lot of things in the two and a half remaining sequences, but there were only ten missions left. The premise of the story just begs for more, and the story felt really short in length. But I really liked that that there were like only two tailing missions, and there wasn't a hard story mission at all. The sidequests were harder.
The side quests were time consuming. The hunting challenges were pretty easy except for one. Catching 1 elk and 4 deers in under 2 minutes was hard. I only beated it when I got the grenade and I was down to two seconds. The renovations was quite time consuming because I had to go back to a lot of locations that I went already through. At times, I ran out of materials and I had to sail or go to looting areas for the renovations a lot. The assassin interception missions, I didn't like those at first, but when I figured out the strategy of killing all the guards around me first before going to look for the person to defend. Then trying to look for the assassins to kill before the countdown ends was kinda thrilling. Though it didn't have proper cutscenes and it kinda felt repetitive. The legendary ships were much easier compare to Black Flag, maybe because of my armor and weapons upgrades. However I couldn't pass the mission in which I had to sink 3 legendary ships, especially the first ship always killed me before the other two even entered. Definitely the hardest part of this game and the only one that I didn't finish in the whole game. Out of the three taking over a place side quests, I liked the settlements the most, because it was the easiest and it gave me materials. Destroying the forts using the ship were pretty easy but I didn't expect that I was the only one sneaking inside the fort, and there were more objectives compare to Black Flag's fort missions. The gang hqs were the hardest, because the captain ran so fast and can deplete Shay's health and include those annoying stalkers in the battle, I was desynchronized at least five times at one gang hq. I've finished all the puzzles in the Abstergo offices as well, and I've looked for all of the tablets. Originally I wasn't gonna look for all of the templar relics but I did. I must say this is the only Assassin's Creed game (so far) that I only didn't finish one side quest. I also bought every outfit, wheel, sail and figurehead that were available to buy.
My problems with this game: visiting almost every location in North Atlantic and River Valley early in the game felt tedious at times. Like I've said, it took me 5 days just to finish the 1st sequence simply because I prioritized visiting all the accessible locations. It wasn't required in the game, and I could have easily moved on with the story missions but I knew when I get to those locations during a mission, I would just think of finding the collectibles first. Also good thing that I visited them very early since the annoying stalkers weren't there yet. Then taking down a lot of ships just to acquire metal and wood for the ship upgrades could get a bit tiring. I spent hours just to get those. I wish there was another option to get those aside from warehouse looting and that one was more challenging than taking down big ships. Even with the settlement rewards, there weren't enough. Like taking down the ships was easy but killing the ship crew wasn't that easy earlier in the game, and most of the time, the health of Shay really regenerated so slowly that I ended up getting desynchronized. Though the ship gun was very helpful when it was already available. The worst thing about the game is the freaking stalkers. They just seemed so everywhere in New York. Then they also later appeared in the other maps and I was just irritated by their presence. Either I am in a mission, side quest or just finding stuff. I always heard their whispers. I was attacked like every two minutes when roaming the city for collectibles. It got really old really fast! Plus I got all the health upgrades and my health always depleted to at least 80% when they stabbed me. There were times that I fought back, then I was killed especially when the other guards also attacked me. It ruined the fun of the game. They should have limited the presence of the stalkers to story missions only. The hideout/hq (fort Arsenal) of Shay is the worst compare to the hqs of the Ac games I've played. There was just nothing there but the fleet map and weapons display.
I think this is probably my second favorite Assassin's Creed game right after Black Flag. I even contemplated of putting it in #1. There was just a lot to do here and I felt it was really well money spent especially this is so far, the most time consuming Assassin's Creed game I've played, and the main story was not even long to begin with. Even if I wasn't taking my time and I was in a hurry, it was still really time consuming. It was like the combination of the ship exploration/hunting animals/Abstergo office from Black Flag and taking down enemies' hq/renovating areas/bank from the Ezio Collection, and much more. This easily dwarves Unity in terms of over-all content. I'm surprised that this game just came and went, just because Unity was the next gen game. I've seen a lot of improvements here compare to the ones I've already played. Plus the story of this intrigued me more than the first five Ac games I've played, its a huge point because I didn't really pay attention to the story of the other Ac games that I've played before. I've already started Syndicate as well and I'm not interested yet into the story. I was kinda hooked with the story of Rogue, even though I've spent 85% of the game in side quests and free roaming. This took me two weeks and I could have easily finished the main story missions, just acquired the upgrades that I really needed and skipped a lot of things in less than a week just to move on to the ac game but I didn't. If only this game had like 15 to 20 more story missions, it would have been my #1 in this franchise.
