At the Mountains of Madness - Guillermo Del Toro's Next Project! - Part 1

the mist was incredible, if only for that amazing ending.

I loved it right up until the end. The only thing missing was a sad trombone.

I much prefer the ambiguous novella ending but even King himself liked Darabont's ending more so my opinion means jack.

I've never seen The Mist, mostly because someone spoiled the ending for me. I hate when people do that.

Yea it's an ending that definitely shouldn't be spoiled. After watching it all the way through it's a genuine "holy **** did that really just happen?!" type of ending.

They should do a Taken, release a PG-13 version in the U.S. and the uncut version overseas where the 15 rating exists.

Besides, the story can easily be done with PG-13.

I hadn't seen The Mist until recently, the movie practically laid the ground work for AMC's The Walking Dead.

The Mist is one of my favorite movies of all time. Darabont is one of my heroes.

It's interesting to note that the ending to the movie is different to the ending in the book.
Apparently King loved the movie ending so much he said "I wish I'd thought of that".

He was also quoted as saying:

It is the most shocking ending ever and there should be a law passed stating that anybody who reveals the last five minutes of this film should be hung from their neck until dead.

ATMOM doesn't look likely:

Guillermo del Toro Says He’s Shooting a Small, Black and White Film Before PACIFIC RIM 2; John Hurt May Star

“Right away, in February/March I should [start on] another very small movie, black and white, really, really bizarre before starting—we start pre-production on Pacific Rim 2 in August, and then I interrupt it briefly to go into the first of next year to do this strange little movie, and then I restart it and go all the way until we start shooting Pacific Rim 2 at the end of 2015 for release in 2017.”

“It’s a very small cast. I would love to have John Hurt, and there’s an actress that I have in mind that is not well-known but I’ve seen her in a short film. That’s all she’s really done, one feature and one short, but she has an incredibly interesting taste and I’m gonna try her out for the main role.”

“There’s one great creature in it.”

“It does [have a title], but I find—I’d rather do the projects and then show them to people than talk about them. I think that it’s going to be a nice thing for people to know which one is it and where it came from when it’s a reality.”

So, for upcoming projects...

- Post-production on Crimson Peak.
- Directing/Executive Producing/Writing "The Strain".
- Pre-Production on Pacific Rim 2.
- Filming of "Mystery Black & White Film".
- Filming of Pacific Rim 2 for 2017 release.

I'd say that DEFINITELY rules out Hellboy 3 AND At the Mountains of Madness for AT LEAST 5-6 years from now.

But hey, at least he's getting steady work (finally).

Del Toro really wants to do ATMOM more than anything, Haunted Mansion will get the boot if Legendary & Universal ever decide to give the greenlight.

Well talk about getting me excited and then being sad all over again.

*clears throat*

So...

The dirty secret of course is that the script for this was apparently pretty bad and we likely dodged a bullet.

Making the movie at the price point he was demanding really didn't make much sense and it would have been set up for failure no matter how good it was, much like the megabudgeted Blade Runner 2049.

Yes, I was about to ask the budget question. How much was he wanting? $150m or something?

**** it, just give him the money to do it.

Yeah and that was in like 2011 dollars. Closer to 170million now.

Universal ultimately did sink over 150 million into a Tom Cruise action/monster joint, The Mummy. It only made 80 million domestic.

He could make 7 more films on the level of Shape of Water for that kind of money and honestly, he smaller films have been far better than his blockbuster work.

If a larger scale film disappoints, he can go back to smaller scale anytime, so there's no problem there. That's what he's been doing all this time. The trouble has always been that most of his projects get stuck in pre-production due to him not being a big enough name. Hopefuly that will start to change now.

I feel like now Netflix can do this. With Del Toro's clout post Shape of Water this is more of a possibility.
