Guillermo del Toro Developing Pinocchio

Pinocchio Footage Reaction: Guillermo Del Toro Delivers A Darker, Personal Take On A Timeless Tale [Annecy]

The first footage shown was a clip from early in the film, more specifically the first meeting between David Bradley's Geppetto and Gregory Mann's Pinocchio. The scene shows the old woodcarver waking up absolutely wasted, with an empty bottle in his hand. As he struggles to get up, he stumbles to his desk and sees a broken photograph of a young boy, his son Carlo.

When he hears a noise from the attic, Geppetto goes to investigate, and comes face-to-face with a wooden boy. But this is not the cute, smooth puppet of the Disney film. Instead, it is a tall, rough creature with plenty of imperfections, rogue branches, and patches of wood that aren't sanded. If having the wooden creature say "You asked for me to live; I am your son!" to the old man wasn't enough, the purple bug next to the boy startles Geppetto, making him fall off the stairs to the floor below.

The audience at Annecy was then shown the first proper trailer for "Pinocchio," which is narrated by Ewan McGregor's Sebastian J. Cricket, who says he's lived for so long he's heard all kinds of stories, particularly those of "imperfect fathers and imperfect sons." We see flashes of Geppetto carving up Pinocchio, the boy escaping to the circus, the blue wood spirit that gives Pinocchio live, and a brief glimpse at that iconic whale.

Could you imagine how bad ass it would be if he’s all like “when I tell a lie my nose grows. I hate freedom” and then his nose sticks out and stabs a fascist right though the skull?

Cue fight scene…

Definitely. That looks paint by numbers.
I mean… aside from (hopefully) Lowery’s Peter Pan, that’s kind of what all the Disney remakes are.

This does look great, though. Criterion better not **** around and make me wait too long for a physical release. They’ve done enough Netflix and GDT stuff that this should be out within a year of release.

Yeah, this looks way better than the Disney+ version.

Expected this to look darker. Doesn’t look much better than the Disney version

Huh? Darker or not, this looks leagues more interesting than the Disney remake to me. That's not necessarily saying much, though, since the Dusney remake was a needless rehash.

Glowing reactions so far. We love to see it. Speculation rising it could become the 4th animated film to crack Best Picture if Netflix decides to push it there. The Academy does love del Toro.

This looks delightful. The design for the Blue Fairy: :hrt:

This looks really nice. A more visually original take on the story.

Also would be nice if he would have done a live action version.

Looks so good.

Less than a month away now!

Gracious, I don't think I knew Pinnochio could be this good.

This is right up there with Pan's Labyrinth, Cronos, and The Devil's Backbone in GDT's elite tier.

Incredible. And obviously you can't say enough about what the animation director and team did.

I am stunned at how great this movie is. Storytelling at the highest level.

Had the chance to see this on the big screen a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it.

Might win the Oscar this year since the animated field is pretty weak this year.
