Sci-Fi Avatar: The Way Of Water

It is absolutely hilarious to see, after the last couple decades+, that people are still foolish enough to doubt Cameron. This movie is going to be ****ing massive.

Like yeah, his movies may not be 100% my jam, but he seems to make stuff audiences like.

That's pretty damn good. There's far more interest from general audiences than some people would have you believe.

The thing with both Titanic and Avatar was that they were enormous successes everywhere, which is why their box office-performances were so far ahead of everything else at the time of release. Avatar grossed over $100 million in ten countries. Avengers: Endgame in just four countries (Endgame made about half of its entire worldwide-gross from just two markets; US and China)

There have been so much talk about it being "too long" since the first Avatar, but perhaps the timing is perfect. I mean, after a long pandemic and a war in Ukraine I think there are a lot of people longing for escapism. And what better than escaping to a beautiful world like Pandora for however long the movie is?

Cameron didn’t impress me back in 2009 (and Avatar was the first 3D movie I watched).
Titanic did impress me… but I was a child

I don’t think anyone is doubting Cameron or “betting against him.” I just think people are doubting that this will make as much money as the first one did. Will it be a hit? Definitely. Will it make $1 billion? Very likely. Will it be the highest grossing movie of all time? I’m not sure on that one.

I see people (not specifically here, but all over Twitter and podcasts and many other places over the last decade), after years of **** talking and pointing out how little audiences care about it now and how there's no cultural impact, are moving the goalposts to "well, it might not be the single most financially successful film of all time." Hedging their bets now!

Trailer and images look stunning and vibrant. People have weird hangups about Cameron. But everything he has ever done looks like it took great dedication, looks like nothing else anyone else can do and is a feast for the eyes. And I'm here for it. After watching the trailer I'm actually sad thinking about the day there won't be anymore Cameron movies. Like who can fill his shoes?

I saw the movie preview when I went to the Dr Strange movie and found it underwhelming. Visually, it looked great and it was released really early so they've probably got more in store for us. IMO, they waited WAY too long for the followup. There's no way to prove it one way or the other, but I think it probably would have done better had it been released about 3 or 4 years after the original.

Did it take this long just due to the technology or were their other factors at play?

I think he endorsed Genesis / Ginisys / Genisys for Arnold no? I doubt he cares much. And while he was involved with Dark Fate, he admitted to clashing with the Deadpool guy (forgot his name) over that film. "It was forged in fire" I think were his exact words :oldrazz:
Haha, yeah. It reminds of when Arnold said he spoke to Jim about whether he should do T3 when he was offered it and he told him something along the lines of, if the script's good then great, if not, then ask for as much money as possible. :funny:

As regards to Dark Fate, yeah that's right. Jim has his own unique style, from editing, to music, to set pieces etc. and none of the sequels and series' have ever been able to replicate the same feel, feel in sync and build on from T2 and improve, in my opinion. Stan Winston once said something along the lines of, "A sequel must be true to the previous film, but it must be more than the previous film". And for me, that feels like the nail on the head, in regards to how I feel everything post T2 failed and never hit the same heights.

I just hope it's more than the effects this time. I didn't care about who was inhabiting the world of the film at all. When it's just spectacle and I'm not charmed by the characters then it's whatever. The first film is missing something and can't hold a candle to the first Star Wars, which what I compare this to because it's Cameron's space opera and he's making a sprawling saga. Where are the beloved characters?

Trust me the Avatar series winning me over is what I want.

Well I still do maintain that it didn't seemingly have much cultural impact from 2011 to May 2022.

Maybe it's anecdotal but there were no people dressed up as the Na'vi for Halloween that I saw, never met anyone who had Avatar ranked high on their lists, never heard someone mention "Jake Sully" or any of the character names, etc. That's not to say people didn't like it or won't watch the sequel but yeah no impact as far as I saw

But I don't get why people take umbrage with people saying that. There's no problem not having any cultural footprint when you make tons of money. There are plenty of movies that make a lot of money but people don't really talk about it. And I'm sure for the filmmakers/studio they would rather make boatloads of money and not be talked about much than flop and be talked about a lot.

It’s clearly made a cultural impact, just not amongst people who base their personalities around their favorite things. My ****in’ Grandma fondly remembers Avatar and she saw it once 13 years ago.

Yeah, this is kinda how I feel too. Zoe’s character was good and I loved Quarritch, but I was pretty meh on everyone else. No amount of blue CGI could make Sam Worthington a good actor, and this was easily his best role. I’m glad other directors and movie studios stopped trying to make him a thing, but Cameron is shackled to him for this series. Hopefully he has a little more charisma this time.
