Surely it has to win the Oscar for special effects?

One would think so. I myself would bet money on it but the Academy acts funny sometimes when it comes to VFX. I could see them giving it to Avatar but I can also see them going "Well we've seen that before but Tom Cruise and the cast of Top Gun were actually flying those jets" and giving it to Maverick as a consolation for that one getting snubbed for cinematography.

Yeah, there's beem some surprising winners in recent years. They have often avoided traditional blockbusters in favor of movies like Ex Machina, First Man and 1917. So with that in mind I wouldn't be all that surprised if something like All Quiet on the Western Front walks away with the price, considering that movie got nine nominations in total. But then again, James Cameron is used to winning it with the first Terminator and True Lies being the only ones not getting the award.

I don't eat or drink anything an hour before and during the cinema experience now. I am 40 and getting older and my bladder isn't what it used to be .

Would be silly if it didn’t. Part of the nomination for Best Picture is surely down to that. If they rate it alongside the other nominations for effects then a surprise to even make it on to the Best Picture list.

I wouldn't bet on that since the Titanic re-release is in 3D only. A lot of moviegoers don't like 3D (especially since this isn't 'real' 3D because the movie wasn't originally filmed that way), so it might not end up getting much of a boost.

I wish they would have done a regular movie re-release in addition to the 3D version. I'd like to see it again in theaters but I'm not interested in the 3D version, so I'll take a pass on this.

According to Wikipedia, the 2012 re-release of Titanic (converted to 3D) earned $343M and "...remains the highest grossing re-released film of all time..."

Though, I wouldn't expect a re-re-release to do quite that well.

The 2012 re-release made a crazy lot of money in China. Something like $145 million. A lot more than it did in it's original run when China was still a very small market and, yeah, very doubtful we will see that kind of numbers this time. Especially if the movies released in time for the Chinese New Year are still going strong.

That's great, but that was in 2012, the 100th anniversary of the sinking. And I think it was in more theaters.

I just don't get why they're not also releasing a regular non-3D version.

But AWOW will probably pass it anyway.

Who knows, at the end of this decade perhaps the entire top ten will consist of only Avatar and Avengers (with Titanic still squeezed in somewhere)

WoW seems to be losing steam so I don’t think it will quite surpass Titanic. Either way after 13 years the sequel is a big success for Cameron.

Anybody see this in 4dx? I saw it and the chairs only moved during the whaling scene the experience was pretty lackluster tbh, movie was still good tho.
