Comics Back In Black Discussion Thread (Spoilers)

All I can say after reading ASM #542 is wow! That ladies and gentlemen is a good ol' fashion asswhipping and several *****slaps to go with it. Kingpin got owned badly.

Hes the same in the New Avengers too... all quippy and full of hilarity. I'm less worried now though, there is no way Spidey would be anything other than dark or brooding if MJ or Aunt May died. It would be so terribly out of character and stupid to have him joking during battle right after MJ or Aunt May died that Marvel would be making themselves look so stupid to have Spidey doing what he's done in the New Avengers and FNSM had either just died.

Man!! I've said this too many times! With all that is going on in his personal life, how and why is he hanging out with the Avengers anyway?? He 's in Japan while MJ and May are in hiding?? How about a leave of absence????

And later for the jokey jokes. He should have no room for that now.

With Pete being weaken from the transfusion, I thought this was gonna be another set up to equalize the fight!! I was pleasantly surprised!! Pete beat the living snot outta Kingpig!! Kingy couldn't lay a hand on him. It was so sweet!!! :woot: :woot: :spidey: Even at half strength Spidey killed him!!

The b**ch* slap was so pimpish of Spidey.

This is how every Spider-man vs King Pin fight should be, minus the evil Spider-man personna. Anyway, I lol'd @ how Fisk really thought it would be like one of his old time ass whoopings on Spidey. At first I thought he had a plan, but who knew? Great issue. Its comics like the back in Black arc that make me think JMS is a good writer, but arcs like the other and Sins past make me think thats a lie.

Aloha,
This was one of those OLD time beat downs that we all miss and love. Kingpin has always been written like he was super. Why, I don't know. Just because he is massive in weight and size, should be NO reason at all that Spidey can't take him down in a few punches, if not ONE.Spidey should have been able to beat him when he first appeared in #50. Now that he is powered up from those days, I'll never understand why they make Kingpin such a hard person for Spidey to take down. Loved #542.

ASM #542 is not the only good story this week. SSM #39 is another solid read. Although the Last Temptation of Eddie Brock is only 2 parts, this arc is really well done. I like the imagined Venom. He has a dark sense of humor. Luckily Eddie manages to fight off his temptation and tries to end his own life (again^^), and fail (again. LOL). I think it will be a better ending if Eddie actually manages to kill himself, but then it will be too dark. Now that Eddie is no longer influenced (I'm in charge now...) by his dark side, what will happen to him in the future? Definately looking forward to more Eddie Brock.

The art is quite a highlight in this issue. I barely notice that this issue is not pencilled by the last issue's penciller. Their style is quite similiar and gives the story a darker feel. I also like Crain's seance art too.

Overall, a 4.5/5

Yeah. Last temptation of Eddie rock was very well written. Him dying at the end would have made the most sense, but killing off a popular character like that must've raised flags in the marvel offices.
If he had died, even though I'm glad he didn't, this would have been the one of the best Spider-man stories since... I don't know when. But I'm still glad he didn't die.

Personaly, I thought it was better for him to die with such a conclusion. It's just a personal opinion, but I don't see any room for him to return as Venom. He's still the same as in the 90's era, I mean, he's still struggling to keep his sanity in check, and even if the end tries to show us that the "Venom" persona is still there, the whole issue shows us that Eddie has enough will and can fight it (with very disturbing ways, but still can fight it), so if we see him regain the symbiote, the "we must protect the innocents" part will still be there. And for a villain of Venom's "arch-enemy" status, it's not something great characterwise.

The issue was still very powerfull in my opinion, I haven't seen such a great Eddie Brock story for long time. But he clearly had to die, he's redeem himself. "Forgive me", for a man who for years blamed Peter for what happened to him, it means everything...

The other problem with that issue (and I thought about it right now) is that, no matter what right now, HE WILL REGAIN THE SYMBIOTE. Not let him kill himself just to have him die of his cancer will be purely stupid, but with the way this story ended, I don't see what good Venom story could pop up.

But hey, it's only my opinion, don't want to start a fight with anybody :yay:

As for ASM 542, I really liked that issue. I thought Peter couldn't do worse to Kingpin than killing him, I was wrong. And finaly I saw something believable, because those old iddues of the 60's where Kinpin could old his own against Spidey was a bit unbelivable. And Peter slapping Fisk was pretty cool. I don't know why, but at the end of the issue I started to think that maybe it would be Fisk that will start to pay for May's hospital care.

I too thought that Peter giving the transfusion was going to be a classic excuse to have a more evenly matched fight... But NO reference was made to it what-so-ever. Huh. It was almost like they forgot about it. Not complaining mind you...

So good to see Spidey -- AND Peter -- really HURT the Kingpin. I have been enjoying the "tough" Spidey... SO much better than making him look ridiculous next to the other superheroes, or having 2-bit criminals break his arm... NICE to see him actually portrayed using the powers he has. :)

While the Eddie story in SSM #39 was good, I really did NOT like the whole sceance thing. I'm obviously NOT into the occult, and didn't like the implication that Aunt May's opinion of the situation was that she was just old and tired and WANTED to die. :(

One...of the single...greatest comics...ever

A bit over the top maybe, but still, every issue of Amazing from the instant May was shot has been incredible. Really pissed that Garney isnt remaining as artist

Fisk paying? I hadn't thought of that but it really does make sense, especially after he had the @hit scared out of him by Pete. Picking him up by his own fat then repeatedly @itch slapping him was one of my all time favorite Pete beat downs.

The Kingpin got in some good verbal blows... what he said to Peter at the beginning HAD to hurt... But I liked how Peter stayed focused and when he did speak, he was fierce! So cool... and hot. :cwink:

He seemed so mature... I wonder if that's going to "age" him too much for the JQ crowd?

As someone mentioned earlier, the way Peter was acting towards Eddie in Aunt May's room was a bit off. Eddie Brock, a crazed psychopath and one of your greatest enemies is standing a few feet away from your Aunt and your remaining extremely calm??

All in all though it was a very nice 2 part story.

I didn't care for the whole "seance" thing going on. But regardless, Eddie's characterization and psychologically screwed up head was just so damn entertaining to read. It's a shame that this title is coming to an end....I really wish that Sacasa would get another Spider-man title to work on in the near future. I doubt that would happen, Joey Q is probably searching for someone a bit more known and mainstream to handle the thousands of ASM books coming out a month now.

Can somebody scan Sensatonal Spider-man Issue#39? My Comic Book store sold out of it and I really want to read it.

If you think about it, he better fly in Dr. Doom or somebody to make sure she doesn't die! It's in his best interest to make sure she stays alive!!

but I guess she's gonna die anyway, from the looks of the last page. So...will Pete go back and kill mr. Fisk??

I hope so....

As cruel as it sounds, at this point and time..I'm kind of hoping they lay Aunt May to rest already. Would it be completely stupid? Yes. Marvel revives her and almost destroys a classic issue just to kill her off again? But with Aunt May out of the way, the comics can shift back to focusing on Peter and Mary Jane....and thats something I've been really missing lately.

I heard they may be heading to Divorce-ville USA. Is that true???

Jackpot...

lol!
That should be the new fad answer to everything MJ now. Its simple. To the point. And makes fun of Marvel, JQ, and any bad ideas in general all at the same time.

I've read ASM #542 several times now... it really IS good. Love the art, dialog and story. It's been awhile...

It's been awhile since I've read any of the regular titles multiple times...

THAT is something I've only been doing consistantly with -- are you ready? -- Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane. (My oasis in a sea of irritation.) Don't knock it till you've read it! It's funny, dramatic, well written and it has that "something" special...

Anyway... why didn't the Kingpin use his usual tricks? Like, his walking stick or pin? I expected Spider-Man to have to contend with a little gas at least... Not complaining, just wondering. It was NICE to have a fight for once in which Peter just purely OWNED someone. :yay:

^Especially, someone who he shouldn't have trouble with in the first place.

I got chills reading AMS#542. It wasn't over the top for me; Peter was sending a message loud and clear to everyone that his family is off limits! And I loved every second of it!

Perhaps the blood transfusion would have weakened Pete moreso in the past, but let's not forget he was recently "reborn" in The Other storyline and is much stronger these days. Straczynzki is a genius in my opinion. I'd love to see his take on The Dark Knight.

"Be the MAN or be The SPIDER .. be the one or be The OTHER!"

One thing I didn't get about Eddie Brock... and it's not really a complaint, because that would mean it interferred with my enjoyment of the story and it didn't, so more like a nitpick... he's a man with a violent criminal record, so you would think he would be held at the cancer-ward in a prison and not unguarded in a normal hospital.

Anyway, the arc was magnificant and out of the three writers, Roberto is the one we really shouldn't be losing (although all three are actually doing some of their best work right now, even JMS). But Roberto has really matured from a solid writer to an excellent writer in the last year.
