Batman/Bruce Wayne Casting Thread - Part 3

Because the effect you're referring to is only really a viable option for limited uses. There's a reason why you only see that effect used sparingly in a few scenes (at most) in these films.
It doesn't have to be as drastic as RDJ or Tarkin. Affleck doesn't look that different. Just use MOSTLY makeup and only slight CG touch ups to make him look like a 33/35 year old Affleck. I'd much rather this than a prequel of Ben's Bruce obly 10 or 12 years younger being played by someone with vague resemblance.

There doesn’t even need to be a resemblance.
It’s unnecessary.
Just go for a straight recast.

I don't think Phoenix is fundamentally against playing the same character multiple times. He didn't get deep into negotiations for Doctor Strange if he was (and by all accounts, he was deep in negotiations). I think what ultimately gave him cold feet was the prospect of signing a multi-film contract blind. A Marvel contract means signing on for at least three solo films, presumably three Avengers films, and any number of cameo appearances in other films. And most of those outright don't have screenplays yet. So he's essentially signing on for films that he knows nothing about. Perhaps he was worried that he'd be handed the script for Doctor Strange 2 and he'd realize he just didn't feel that passionately about it anymore. Well, too bad for him. They've got him locked up.

I think IF there is an interest to have Phoenix make multiple appearances as The Joker, they're basically going to have to play it by ear and approach him on a film-to-film basis. I think if he's actually able to sit down with a director and read a script each time, he may prove more open-minded to the whole thing. That's just my feelings on that.

This is a fair counterargument. I'm still skeptical that Phoenix would stick around for more than one movie, but there's precedent that he's not entirely opposed to the idea. He'd just need to be sold on the individual project on a film-by-film process, most likely.

But regardless, I bet they won't make a final decision on this idea until sometime after the Joker movie hits theaters. They'll wait to see how fans and critics respond to Joaquin Phoenix in the role and then decide whether to mess around with canon a bit by having that version of the Joker appear in Reeves' Batman films instead of Leto's from Suicide Squad.

Source? The tweet Reeves sent out about "it's DCEU..." early in the year?

Honestly if it happens, my money will be that instead of Reeves' Batman leaving the DCEU canon, it'll just be Warner Bros incorporating the Phoenix Joker canon into the DCEU and replacing the Leto Joker with Joaquin Phoenix instead.

Think more along the lines on how Alan Moore's The Killing Joke was initially just a one-off "Elseworlds" type story that had no basis in the actual DC Comics canon, but after its success among the fans, a lot of its key beats and iconic imagery was incorporated into the official canon (i.e. Barbara becoming crippled, Joker in the Hawaii t-shirt).

IMO if next year Joaquin's Joker film is a critical success, and financial hit (which it should be, only costing 55M), then Reeves Batman comes out say in 2020 and is a big critical hit as well, then there is no reason for Hamada and Reeves not to approach Joaquin and ask if he wants to be THE proper Joker in an eagerly awaited Reeves' high quality sequel, it could be a one off too, you could argue the origin film is more pre-Joker, and the batman film is a slightly different character as the older Joker in his prime.

If the script is great maybe Joaquin will be tempted to consider it? And imagine the hype!

As for continuity, these films could all be set in the 80s to 2000s so that can be explained as prequels and its own thing, and/or a special crossover if the movies are set under different banners, like Supergirl and Flash before Kara moved to CW. Audiences won't lose their sleep over it as long as it's great.

So they did that in the comics? That's great, and the other criteria is whether Reeves wants Joaquin, Leto or his own actor, which could lead to 3 Jokers..he probably would love Joaquin anyway

What if in the future they want to use Batman in the DCEU, in a teamup or cameo of some sort, involving the other heroes (and the actors we know playing them.) Which actor would they use to play Batman? What if they needed Batman to interact with Leto's Joker?

So they have these options for the Joker

1) Batman prequels - Leto, DCEU current timeline - Leto

2) Prequels - new actor, DCEU - Leto

3) Prequels - new actor, DCEU - new actor

4) Prequels - Joaquin, DCEU - Leto

5) Prequels - Joaquin, DCEU - new actor

6) Prequels - Joaquin, DCEU - Joaquin

If Reeves shoots Batman next year, release it for mid 2020, takes a break and do the Netflix deal starting 2021, return to helm Batman 2 involving The Joker, from 2022 and shoot it 2023, release 2024...

...then we potentially have BOP (2020), SS2 (2021?), Batgirl? (2022) and BOP2 or GCS and/or SS3 (2023), do they really need the Joker for these films? If they do for some of them, it won't start to get awkward until 2023 when Reeves starts to shoot a sequel with a an actor not called Jared Leto, before that, Leto will be the official Joker...

There are many ways this will go down, egos, contracts, Reeves/Joaquin's willingness...but my preference would be - Joaquin for his own movie and Reeves' movie(s), Leto for all the current timeline films and doing a better job under different directors and writers

and they can just make Leto's Joker a different person to Joaquin, and I'd use the same Batman actor for Reeves films and current timeline as Affleck won't be back so it's a straightforward replacement, so when Bat meets Leto's Joker in the say SS2/3 or Legion of Doom one day, it's just a different Joker so they don't need to say stuff like "oh, you look different" or explain the completely different behaviours, they did do the 3 Joker thing in ?Rebirth? Just quickly explain something.

This should keep Joaquin happy as he's only doing 2-3 films max and Leto keeps his roles maybe even as main villains in SS spin offs/team up films.

If by some crazy chance Joaquin wants to do more than one film, you find a way to make this happen

If Joaquin Phoenix knocks it out of the park and the film is a big success (critically and commercially), I don't expect WB will be satisfied with keeping his Joker as a one-off take. If people really respond to it, and there's clear demand for more, we may see them try to court Phoenix for more appearances while Leto's Joker project quietly sinks into development hell.

Maybe he'll have some bargaining chips with his future Batman. I can't imagine he'd jump into Joker and not look forward to facing off against his arch-nemesis.

If Joaquin sets conditions that he has to approve Batman and the script, that may be all that it takes to get him to sign a sequel.

Eh, Phoenix is a great actor but he certainly doesn't have that kind of pull. If Reeves and WB decide to introduce the Joker into the Batman films, and if they decide they want Phoenix, they'll simply give him a script and ask if he's interested. If not, they'll move on to Plan B.

How do we feel about faux-Hardy Logan Marshall-Green? After Upgrade I’m in favor.

I've liked him for awhile, and could probably picture it, but if they're aiming to go younger, 4 years isn't a massive difference.

Hell, he's the same age now that Affleck was when he was first announced.

Logan Marshall-Green? The Tom-Hardy-lite guy?

Doesn't he...kinda suck in everything though?

Logan Marshall Green is a pretty good actor. He is good in Quarry, Dark Blue and Damnation.

Logan Marshall-Green was great in Upgrade. He's got a good look but, yeah, he's getting a bit older now. And he doesn't really strike me as Bruce Wayne. He could be a good villain, though, or a gangster.

Yeah, I also liked him in Upgrade. Servicable in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Remember his face, but don't remember his performance in Prometheus though.

Bulk him up and I could buy him as a new Wolverine, as he's not super tall like Hugh is (not hating on Hugh, I loved Hugh in the role).

Albeit small roles, he wasn't bad as Montana in "Spider-Man: Homecoming" and his roles in "Prometheus" and "Devil."

Yeah, as far as I know, he's never sucked in anything.

OK so Jeremy Irons cast in Watchmen HBO series.

Reboot cast it is lol
