Batman/Bruce Wayne Casting Thread - Part 3

I find Armie Hammer a bland actor most of the time. Internet fanboys are pretty much the only ones I ever see calling for Hammer to be cast in superhero roles. I don't think there is a huge appetite among general audiences to see Hammer in another major lead role to be honest.

Hammer said he was focusing on smaller indie passion movies in a interview last November. He kind of admitted Hollywood's attempts to make him a leading man in big Blockbuster movies failed.

"I tried doing the big movies, I tried doing that, and there was almost an effort to get me to do these things, and it just didn't work," Hammer confessed. "At the end of the movie, I just didn't feel I was any better for it than when I started. Whereas, with these passion projects that you do, you sign on because you truly believe in it you can devote every single thing to it.

Pattinson as Batman is something I could get behind. He was terrific in Lost City, he has come a long way from the Twilight days. Dornan is an unorthodox choice that just "clicks" when you really think about it.

Pattinson has said he is interested in doing big blockbuster films like superhero flicks but no one ever asks him to come read for a role.

If Hamada ended up easing up Affleck about staying in the role (like some rumors indicate), would you guys agree with it? Frankly I'd have no issue, I liked his acting in BvS, you could say he was passionate about the role in that movie...not so much on JL; my guess is that if Reeve's script could make Affleck passionate for the role again it could work out very well.

I mean, there wouldn't be much I could do or say against the matter if Affleck did stay. I know if he were convinced to stick around, it'd almost definitely result in a good performance from him, but that's not my only concern. I think it'd be kicking the can down the line and we'd be doing this routine of "Will he come back or not?" between almost every other Batman film until he does leave.

That's just one of the inevitable tradeoffs of going with an older Batman. Time stops for no one. You can't stay in that spot for the long term, especially if you're working within an overarching cinematic universe.

Looks like my question kinda got lost in the shuffle but what about Liam Hemsworth as Batman? Any specific reason why his name is not being thrown up? Think he is a good age for whatever direction Reeves seems to be going with his script as well.

Because he is Thor's brother and looks exactly like Thor.

Case closed.

I'd be very intrigued to see Reeves start from scratch, casting-wise. He never really goes A-list with regards to lead roles. The cast of Cloverfield was all up-and-comers, same with the leads of Let Me In. His Apes movies were a mix of a CGI main character, fairly recognizable antagonists (Harrelson, Oldman), and moderately well-known humans caught in the middle (Keri Russell, Jason Clarke).

As much as I would love to see someone like Jake Gyllenhaal or Oscar Isaac under the cowl, I think Reeves is going to go with a fresh face. Someone he can help to gain steam in their career, rather than just be another notch in their belt.

I was just thinking about how sometimes Directors tend to cast the same actor in several of their movies and was looking into actors that have been in Reeves' movies and I might have come up with someone that Reeves might cast as Batman, the one actor in the right age range for this role that's worked with Reeves more than once is Toby Kebbell, wouldn't be surprised if he gets a look at getting the part. The other repeat actor in Reeves movies is Kodi Smit-McPhee but I'm guessing he's alittle too young, haha. I don't particularly care for Kebbell much, but just something to think about.

Honestly, I tend to confuse Liam with Jai Courtney more often than his own brother.

Honestly, I'd prefer a new, younger actor for longevity purposes. Starting the DCU with a Frank Miller-esque old, grizzled Batman was a very short-sighted move imo. I prefer Bats to be closer in age to Cavill and Gadot.

But if Affleck came back, meh. It is what it is.

What about Matt Bomer?
I’d be happy with that :D

Bomer is also one of my favorites for the part. I even enjoy the idea of him looking like Cavill, because of the gag in the comics that they look similar-ish.

Having only seen him in the Apes movies and A Monster Calls, I think he's got good range, but I'm not sure I get a sense of Batman off of him.

I'd say Black Mask, if Reeves were considering that character. But he's kind of done the masked villain thing already, and...

What about Matt Bomer?

For the sheer joy I'd feel watching a certain sect of fandom melt down over a gay man playing Batman, sure.

I mean, there are other pluses, but mainly that one for me.

Hollywood is still scared to let openly gay male actors headline their blockbusters. Just this week Rupert Everett has talked about how directors in the past had said they wanted to cast him in leading roles only for studio execs and producers to veto him because he was openly gay.

Luke Evans stopped being public about his sexuality as soon as his Hollywood career started taking off despite being open about it in the UK before

Rupert Everett's not leading big Hollywood movies because most people outside of the UK have no idea who the hell he is, not because he likes to bone other guys.

If Ezra's Flash movie gets made, he would be the first openly gay headliner I believe.

As for who should be younger Bruce, I am not sure. No one has really clicked for me yet.

His star was rising in the late 90's. It was during this period that he started to experience difficulties.

When he broke through in My Best Friend's Wedding the common excuse/theory was that audiences wouldn't buy him as straight characters anymore which was, at least now is, nonsense.

I'd prefer Reeves go with a younger , meaning 20s-30s , lesser known actor in the part as opposed to another big name casting like Affleck.

Ezra is bisexual. He would be an openly LGBT actor to headlining blockbuster though.

It's nothing to do with that, guys. Most people suspect Cruise and Travolta are into dudes, they don't give a crap.

That’s the best way to go.

Someone that can be the character for years

Okay

Stop

Err, both of those guys are pretty substantially reported/suspected to be bi, or even gay.

Doesn't mean jack as far as a career. Yeah, Everett's "out", so it's different in that sense. But straight, gay, whatever, that guy was never going to be some huge Hollywood A-lister. He's a serious British stage-and-period-piece type of guy. Homosexuality isn't the reason he never broke, he's just a different "type" of actor, and almost exclusively known at home.

Does anyone know if Bomer has romantic chemistry with any actress on camera. I've only seen him in films where he doesn't even have a romantic interest, like The Nice Guys. If he can pull off that kind of chemistry (be it Catwoman, Talia, Vicki, etc.), then I really don't think there's a problem.
