BvS Batman Physique Thread - Part 1

I'm really pleased with the direction that Snyder has taken the new Batman 'look' in - not just the suit, but the musculature of it, choosing Affleck as the new Wayne, and Affleck's work on his own physique.

Like most on here, I've been reading DC and Marvel comics for many, many years - along with the animated features - and been exposed to many different depictions of Batman. I've always favoured the ones where he's a big burly guy - lots of raw strength, brute force, and so on. The ones where he towers over criminals and looks hugely intimidating in the suit when he's staring someone down without even uttering a word.

We never really got that in live action before. Michael Keaton isn't a big guy by any means, and Clooney and Kilmer are both circa 5"10/5"11 and weren't particularly muscular at the time they starred. Christian Bale was probably the biggest physically, at 6ft dead, but even with the muscle he put on I never really felt his Batman was hugely intimidating in isolation - only when he was surprising criminals, or roaring "swear to me" while they hung upside down, and so on. Part of this probably was down to Nolan's approach where Batman was more ninja-like and opted for surprise and speed over brute force. The few scenes we got in BB where Batman was genuinely scary - his first appearance in the dock scene, lurking in shadows, and the aforementioned encounter with bullock - were never really repeated in TDK and TDKR.

Affleck is a guy who seems to tower over most people at 6"4, and asides from the height and muscle he put on, he is also very, very broad-shouldered, giving him a really powerful look. I hope Snyder has had the sensibility to work with these characteristics and try to make him more of a powerhouse rather than a lithe, Bruce-Lee inspired Batman.

It's obvious Snyder is going for the power-house look going by the new suit (he might have actually gone overboard).

The shot of Affleck's back in the trailer really is the first time I was able to visually gauge the work Affleck put into his body, if only partially.

I was a bit worried Affleck didn't do much to get in shape, since there were like 100 shots of Cavill shirtless and even actually working out pre-MoS release and none for Ben really pre this movie.

Bale in Begins is still the standard for Batman actors in getting in shape and I haven't seen enough from Ben yet to put him right there. But yeah he is naturally pretty big.

...he got big, but maybe not BIG. But they can always 300 his a*s for any brief shirtless shots...

Some flattering shots of Ben from the BvS special

He's doing some weighted pull-ups I'll give props to Ben if he was actually doing them weighted.

Don't wanna spoil it, but a little CGI muscle definition can go a long way... let's not deny Batfleck is huge but i wouldn't be surprised if a little tune up occurred.

Hmm it wouldn't be the first time some "extras" were added to a Snyder film to make the actors look a little more impressive. A lot of the 300 guys had painted on abs essentially.

The only thing that would make me suspicious is that I never saw any pics of Ben during filming where he looked particularly cut he looked like he was walking around with somewhat of a perma-bulk and in those shots there is some clear definition on the chest which is actually not that easy to get.

There were tons of behind the scenes shots that were released of Cavil shirtless when filming MoS but none of Ben.

Probably because all of Cavill's shirtless scenes in Man of Steel were outside.

He's a big guy.

Maybe there's a hint of a gut here, but most of it looks like muscle.

PS. Okay, this is DEFINATELY after filming ;)

Bruce doing pull ups looks good but its pretty obvious the pecs and upper abs are cgi'd. There are a couple pics from when they were filming where affleck is coming out of the gym, and in atleast one pic you can see a bit of a pot belly when he's relaxed. He added muscle mass but also fat.

He was pretty lean for a couple weeks towards the end of filming.

Usually for superhero roles like this, they focus on getting the actor as big as possible leading up to principal photography, then lean them out through the production. This culminates in a shirtless scene filmed at exactly the right time, usually towards the end of production.

Was the Oil rig scene actually outside though? Every behind the scene shot I've seen of it it seems to have been filmed on a green screen soundstage.

There was a whole video series though released of Cavil training to get in shape.

I think Snyder wanted people to know Cavill really did get in shape for the role, there seemed to have been less or any real focus on Ben though.

I don't care if they have to squeeze Affleck into that suit by putting him in a girdle, walking him to the top of a three story building, slathering him in Crisco, and dropping him into it. So long as he looks great in the suit. And he does, so...why are we arguing again?

^ But yeah, I'd rather Batman not have perfect abs (like the above photo). Why would a person want to look physically perfect if he's gonna be fighting in the dark, wearing what's ultimately a padded costume?

I know not every/most stars aren't the gym rats that Jackman is but he's definitely the standard for older actors in these type of role.

Ummm... I think Affleck physique looks way better (at least in that gif).

The scenes with Bale training shirtless in Batman Begins went a long way in creating the illusion of an expertly trained fighter, not just an actor in a suit. The same principle applies here.

Ya'll are underestimating the power of a pump. Plus, this workout scene would have been shot in like a day or two, he would have been working out beforehand specifically for this scene, getting cut n all. That's what Cavill did with his too.

Why does even it matter if it's fake or not as long as it looks real on screen.

Yup, which it does look real enough and it'll go by on screen within a few seconds anyway

Yup, he was quite lean towards the end alright. Wouldn't surprise me at all if that shirtless scene was 100% him and not cgi or enhanced.
