I'm really pleased with the direction that Snyder has taken the new Batman 'look' in - not just the suit, but the musculature of it, choosing Affleck as the new Wayne, and Affleck's work on his own physique.
Like most on here, I've been reading DC and Marvel comics for many, many years - along with the animated features - and been exposed to many different depictions of Batman. I've always favoured the ones where he's a big burly guy - lots of raw strength, brute force, and so on. The ones where he towers over criminals and looks hugely intimidating in the suit when he's staring someone down without even uttering a word.
We never really got that in live action before. Michael Keaton isn't a big guy by any means, and Clooney and Kilmer are both circa 5"10/5"11 and weren't particularly muscular at the time they starred. Christian Bale was probably the biggest physically, at 6ft dead, but even with the muscle he put on I never really felt his Batman was hugely intimidating in isolation - only when he was surprising criminals, or roaring "swear to me" while they hung upside down, and so on. Part of this probably was down to Nolan's approach where Batman was more ninja-like and opted for surprise and speed over brute force. The few scenes we got in BB where Batman was genuinely scary - his first appearance in the dock scene, lurking in shadows, and the aforementioned encounter with bullock - were never really repeated in TDK and TDKR.
Affleck is a guy who seems to tower over most people at 6"4, and asides from the height and muscle he put on, he is also very, very broad-shouldered, giving him a really powerful look. I hope Snyder has had the sensibility to work with these characteristics and try to make him more of a powerhouse rather than a lithe, Bruce-Lee inspired Batman.
