Batman R.I.P.

Still sounds cool. What was the basic premise of the story? From the ending I guess it was some sort of 'ultimate' battle?

I see, seems rather interesting, a bit like Knightfall saga then? And sorry to sound like a n00b, but what happened after that story, did it go into Y1 or something else?

I dunno has it been suggested yet but maybe the whole Batman R.I.P means that he will finally kill someone and thats the 1 thing he can't do and thus, well yeah you get the idea. :P

as Doctor Baywatch said, there were 3 issues after #400 that were filler. Nothing really special.

To answer your question though, yes, it went right into Year One with issue 404.

#400 is worth tracking down though. It's damn good. Here's a link from Mile High Comics. A little pricey, but i think it might be worth it. It should be reprinted. Why it's not in any "Greatest Batman Stories Ever Told" collection is beyond me.

Excellent, I might check it out when my new student loan comes through.

I've always thought that "Year One" was planned to be #401, but didn't get ready in time. #401 is the first post crisis Batman issue, since it was part of the "Legends" crossover and the first one to be edited by Denny O'Neill.

You're probably right, it makes sense doesn't it? I liked the Legends stuff, Venom is an awsome TPB and one of my favourite stories, it says so much about Batman without actually saying much at all.

I'm loving Grant's run on Batman so far. And I can't shake the feeling that Batman R.I.P. will be Batman's version of Daredevil Born Again. The greatest test for the Dark Knight.

What I don't get is why DC has teamed Morrison up with Tony Daniel on this arc? If this is such a monumental story then they've put it in the wrong hands. Daniel's work varies from bland to ugly; sort of a poor-man's Jim Lee with much less style. There were pages in the last issue that I had to re-read a few times because I has no idea what was happening from panel to panel.

Pretty much every artist working in comics today wants to draw Batman and Daniel gets the job?

I think Tony Daniel is great. To each his own I guess. If there's one thing I can complain about the art is the coloring, I don't like seeing a Blue-Green Batman.

This is complete speculation. But judging from the Grant Morrisson interview and the descriptions of the upcoming issues, here's my guess for what "Batman R.I.P." could be about:

The Joker discovers that Batman is Bruce Wayne. Working on this information, he systematically destroys Wayne's life, driving him to the brink of insanity.

This is a flawed idea, I know. Partly because I've always liked the idea implied in "A Death In The Family", that The Joker has always known Bruce Wayne is Batman, but doesn't care.

If that's the case then he owes a huge debt to Frank Miller's Daredevil:Born Again.

Isn't this R.I.P. story line tying into Final Crisis, which Morrison is also writing?

Yeah my guess is that this will be the catalyst for Final Crisis. So it'll be big. Maybe Batman does actually die, then he's reborn after FC.

But why kill him and bring him back? I think I'm going to go with the theory that its not BATMAN to die, essentially. That Bruce is going to die. Which, in my opinion, is absoultly horrible. I was checking out some other forums on this and someone said
Everyone thought it was gonna happen in Final Crisis;if it happened though. Maybe this is some sort of tribute to the Earth-2 Batman's death.
Which honestly, doesn't make much sense to me. But, as I said, maybe they're just going to kill off Bruce. Maybe, not even kill him. Maybe he'll just give the title of Batman to Dick Grayson. Which, to me, another horrible choice.

Either way, Bruce not being Batman, or Batman not being Bruce, it sucks. DC better have a really good story for this. And by DC I mean Grant Morrison.

If Batman dies it will most likely have no repercussions after Final Crisis. He'll be back regardless of whatever happens.

But I really don't see the point of killing him off just to bring him back. Besides a ploy to get money.
And I agree. Batman without Bruce isn't Batman. Its just a man in a rubbersuit.

But I really don't see the point of killing him off just to bring him back.

The point is to make it interesting, and the situations in the story more dire.

Without Batman, an important figure of security is gone.

But it wouldn't make it more intresting, it would only piss people off! To kill Batman would be a mistake all over. Reguardless of wheter or not they're going to bring him back.

The only people who would really get "pissed off" are either unfamiliar with how DC works, or overly emotional fans.

I'm neither, so I'm excited for this.

I don't know. There was a time when I would have been completely opposed to a Batman death. I mean, out of all comic universes, the Batuniverse is definitely my personal favorite. But, I feel that the Batstory should have a fitting conclusion -- that Batman should eventually die. That being said, the story needs to be epic, tremendous, and memorable, and should tie everything up nicely. I'm not saying the Morrison arc is how it should be done (or even i it is being done) -- I actually have no opinion on that as of now because I haven't picked it up yet. Just saying that most stories have an ending, and I'd like Batman to have one too.

Also. While I can see why a possible death for Batman could kick up some controversy, I'm not entirely sure why it has received the level of anger with which it has been met. Comic continuity is twisted anyway, if you don't like a particular arc, why not just ignore it? With me, if I see a story that I don't think fits my personal vision of the Batuniverse, I just forget about it (Jason Todd's resurrection for example). Granted, it may be difficult because it can continually resurface in various references throughout the ongoing series, but in my personal experience, I just tolerate it.

But whatever, I can still see why people are against it -- just my two cents.

I can agree with that, every story needs an ending, but what I think most people are annoyed about is that *if* Batman/Bruce Wayne does indeed die, he'll be back. They've got a massive multi-million dollar movie out this summer, no way will he stay dead. My guess is that he'll 'die' and be resurected during Final Crisis. Which still sucks.

I honestly cannot see why DC love Morrison so much, the reaction to his run on Batman has been awful, only a handful of people like it, it's confusing, and now they've made him the Final Crisis Tzar, again, without much explanation.

IMO Dini deserves something, Detective has owned these last few months, everyone agrees, and the only criticism I ever hear of it is that it's not a continuous story. I say give Dini Batman after FC. C has a hard-on for Morrison, but it'd be awsome to see him given something after his exceptional work on Detective.
