BvS Batman/Superman Pushed Back to 2016 - Part 1

"Where that argument fails is that it was the actor who was the draw not the character."

"People went to see IM because of him."

That's what you said. Maybe you've been into messageboard stuff long enough that you remember there being a big buzz about RDJ playing IM but I can tell you from a general audience perspective he was not the draw. Curiosity? Yes. But his name did not put many asses in seats. He quality of the movie and the quality of his performance where what did. But that wasn't known until after it came out.

If I recall correctly, people were even raging that Downey Jr. was going to play Iron Man (citing the whole drugs/alcohol issues even though he started straightening himself before that). Not to the extent of Affleck playing Batman, but yeah, people didn't like it.

If the films do go head to head it's a genuine coin-flip situation IMO. In fact they may just end up cancelling each other out to some degree given they're probably going after the same demographic.

Yes, I think they would probably just cancel each other more than anything. If WB's markets the Pan film correctly....than it could possibly beat Antman.

It will be interesting if WB's decides to move Pan back a week though, so they can have that weekend to themselves pretty much. This new Pan film sounds like an interesting concept and take on the Pan mythos without a doubt.

The reaction in my environments was laughable. All I heard was "who?" or "the comedian?" and that was it. And that was before I got fully into the news-sphere. Talking just general moviegoer reactions

Absolutely they would because they *are* targeting the same demos. Which makes shifting the Pan release the smart thing to do

You're missing the point entirely. WB -- who look at it from a business perspective and not an "I hate marvel movies so I hope they fail" one -- will not take the risk (and it is an undeniable risk) to open their next franchise against ANY Marvel Studios movie. Especially the one coming out a few months after Avengers 2. WB worry about risk mitigation for their releases more than any other studio. If they are adamant about releasing the movie in July 2015 their two options are:

1 ) Flip the coin and hope it does well against a Marvel Studios movie -- again, risking their Hobbit replacing franchise potential

2 ) Move it two weeks back to a weekend where there's very little competition

It's common sense

Oh I hear ya. It would be better for WB's to have the Pan opening weekend to themselves cause it is a potential franchise starter. I just don't see them moving Pan two weeks back though when there is no need.

Perhaps just one week back to July 24th would be good enough.

Looks to me that Pan will be targeting more of the ladies though with Jackman and Hedlund as pirates. The ladies love pirates.

This AntMan will not be targeting the ladies very much if at all from what it seems.

Judd Apatow's 'Trainwreck' opens on the 24th. Another bad move. WB front loads their tentpole movies (like Man of Steel) which means they want their opening weekend all to themselves. They would have the 31st to themselves. One week isn't enough breathing room as the summer 2013 showed.

Males age 17 - 25 account for the majority of repeat viewings for action/adventure movies. Pan is definitely targeting a male audience first and foremost. That's like saying Wolverine was targeted to women first because Jackman was shirtless.

Marvel Studios movies target younger audiences (-13) which make up the largest box office demographic.

Yep. Wasn't until the trailers started hitting that people's ears perked up. Then the nonstop wave of great reviews. I'm glad he found his footing. Was always rooting for him. His album The Futurist is one of my weekly listens

You think that Disney/Marvel will shift their May 2016 film up to April, should WB move Pan to July 31st? As sort of a tacit "not to open on the same weekend" agreement?

I thought it was a stupid move for WB to move BvS from July 2015 to May 2016. Their usual mid-July spot (July 22) is still open for 2016.

Another dumb Apatow movie? Oh wow. Meh....I do see where you are coming from with a possible move back to July 31st though. Is there even a script or cast for Apatows films though?

Not stupid move at all. I though it was a great move. If they were going to push it back....than that coveted 1st weekend of May slot was the pick of the litter.

Box Office records can potentially be broken at that spot. They will have 3D IMAX screens for almost a good 2 months also.

I think that's one of the things they're talking about behind the scenes. Release date planning/shifting happens all the time and studios usually talk to each other when setting it up. Thankfully they're not as against each other as the DC VS Marvel VS DC fanbases are ;) Marvel will move their 2016 movie up or down a month and WB will move their 2015 one to the last weekend in July. It doesn't make any sense whatsoever for either of those weekends to each have two tentpole movies apiece.

Sure Pan will target more males and the younger demo but like I said....who are the ladies going to want to see when it comes to a date type movie?

Jackman and Hedlund battling and swashbuckling as pirates or seeing a bland comedian like Rudd and an old timer like Douglas in an uninteresting and unappealing Marvel phase 3 or 4 character named AntMan?

Hedlund is a teen girls/tween girls heart throb and Jackman attracts the mature ones.

You're missing the point. Entirely.

Oh so you've already seen Ant Man? Take ut you didn't like it? What was so bad about it? Oh wait it isn't even out yet! :whatever:

Why does everything turn into a versus battle round here. “Insert product I love" is so much better than “insert product I hate”. Why can't something be good on its own merits? And why can't people be more honest and just say I don't like Marvel or I don't like DC so I'm not gonna like this film etc.

I don't like Marvel for the most part. So I don't give two hoots about ant man.

That's great, but it has nothing to do with the discussion, which is in regards to who (either Marvel or WB) will choose to shift their 2015 and 2016 release dates so they don't both put out movies on the same weekend. Which would be dumb of them to do

It was a response to the two posts above mine, which I approve of.

I'd rather just steer clear of the DC VS Marvel VS DC stuff. Let me know when ya'll are done

I wasn't doing a versus anything. Just stating what I prefer, but whatever.

Say I think an image from Transformers is well composed and striking.

Naturally I think it is the greatest film ever made and my favorite movie of all time.

A very obvious conclusion that.

Sorry, i didn't mean to insinuate something like that or that to serve as an attack to you, i had a Bad Boys II avatar not too long ago while still not thinking it was a good movie, glad to see somebody else who doesn't confuse liking something with thinking it's great, just that
