BvS Batman V Superman Box Office Prediction - Part 9

Most superhero movies have a staggered release.

Yeah blockbusters don't open simultaneously in all markets.
BvS was unprecedented in that respect and they got to claim a record because of that rather then it making a ridiculous amount of money

The smoke and mirrors marketing is well executed. Hope they win awards or at least pay raises for this. Imagine if it had opened with no embargo and no fan screenings

X-Men Origins:Wolverine had a 69% drop off, this will top that. This Sunday drop is indicative of that.

So officially $420 million after one weekend. Fantastic start. It'll be interesting to see the Monday domestic gross.

It would have spelled serious trouble.

I understand the WB trying to salvage things, but if they fool themselves into thinking some corrections don't need to be made for JL, then that is just laughable.

True dat. But OTOH kudos to WB's marketing department. There's no rule that says you can't create a new record. They saw an opportunity, grabbed it and reaped the publicity benefits. As Poni has said it's quite nicely turned all the headlines in their favor after the avalanche of negative reviews.

(And I dunno about you but I think $420 million is a ridiculous amount of money :cwink:)

[BLACKOUT]Which they kinda spoiled in the second trailer when they showed Doomsday.[/BLACKOUT]

I didn't even think of them going that route, regardless of Doomsday being in it. Zack was right, a lot of us assumed he wouldn't dare. :o

Now imagine if it had opened as a good movie.

If this movie drops 70% next weekend would that put 900ww in doubt. Is there a ww number locked in now even with terrible drops?

I felt pretty confident in my belief that WB had fudged that OW number up a bit since it was just barely above the $170M milestone, which seemed so convenient.

It still made a ton of money though, but the interesting part is how it will continue to draw. Well, interesting to the extent of the very mild interest I have in how much money rich corporations make.

Did the Avengers open in China on the same day? I always thought the WW opening weekend data was skewed...

No, they didn't. [BLACKOUT]Nobody figured it was going in that direction because Wonder Woman and Batman were in the fight.[/BLACKOUT]

Just a few more steps to half a billion worldwide after the first weekend. Looks good from here.

The first reaction in here [BLACKOUT]when Doomsday was shown was that Superman is dead. People got called out for jumping to conclusions.[/BLACKOUT]

[BLACKOUT]You're right. They were just going to use Doomsday, whose only notable contribution to comics is the Death of Superman arc, and not kill Superman.[/BLACKOUT]

I don't think BvS is dropping 70% next weekend. It simply has no competition for 2 more weeks.

Maybe 60%.
