BvS Batman Vs Superman Manips & Art - - Part 11

Nice idea and nicely executed, too. I think I prefer the look of whatever technology is behind the types of white eyes that BatFan1979 does in his manips (and that I did in mine, before I started just letting that guy do his thing!), but I would gladly take your idea over what they are doing in the film. Hooray for the gray suit, but I'm annoyed that it's 2015 and people are still on the fence about this signature part of Batman's look.

Folks who always say "it'll never look right on screen" ... but when has it *ever* looked right in the comics to show Batman's human eyes underneath the mask? I can't think of many times. That white eye look is what makes him appear as more than a man - those "windows of the soul" have the drapes drawn and the shutters locked. When BatFan1979, or the other subgroup of us who have sort of shared a similar aesthetic, do a Batfleck manip, that's when Affleck ceases being Affleck for me, and starts being Batman. And *the ideal* Batman. When the first shots of him in costume was released, I was happy, too. But I was really bummed about the eyes.

To me, the white eyes represent Batman's intentional removal from humanity. Hiding the eyes hide expression, but at the same time, does Batman want to appear expressive, or inhuman and otherwordly?

I think it'd be cool if they showed the regular eyes when Batman was talking to friends, and had the eyes light up when confronting enemies. It would show the difference between "friendly Batman" and "hostile Batman."

I like the one on the right the best. It looks like four eyes are staring at you. Creepy :)

I don't like either of those at all.

I guess oversized cat eyes are better. Haha

That's actually pretty awesome!

Edit: Made a tweak to the lenses and put them the brightest, to simulate what it could look like at their optimum exposure.

Now granted this is the crappy TDK cowl. I saw a great manip on deviantart but I can post it since it uses the leaked image of Bats. I think you need wide lenses to give him full peripheral vision. In any case, I know the majority here hates lenses so regardless of the design, it would be very unpopular.

Then you're in luck as he doesn't have lenses in the movie. Oh and thanks for your input! :oldrazz:

Edit: I also hope you read the post and saw the 3rd one I posted.

I'll send you a PM.

I actually like the Jim Lee squinting eyes the best (the thin lenses). The cowl would have to be sculpted like that, and it'd be a bit unrealistic as it'd limit his view, but I think that looks the best.

BA - you and me are always on the same wavelength when it comes to those eyes:woot: I still think those Jim Lee-style, emoting slit eyes are still a possibility one day down the line using CGI of course.

Like in this panel, not by Jim Lee himself, but in his style...the lack of human eyes just makes Batman seem more supernatural, at least in the comic...I think it could translate well to film if down with care and a bit of real effort on the part of the creative team.

Amazing art. What book is this from?

this originally comes from Superman: For Tomorrow by Jim Lee

Of course that looks amazing. It's much harder to translate to reality in terms of design. I'd love to see it happen one day though.

He won't be able to see much. Looks cool though.

What shape would work?

Something much smaller, like that art above. Best way to pull that off is to give him white contact lenses, though. But the huge lenses, while more grounded, just don't work. They nullify his intimidating look. He ends up looking like a bug-eyed monster with large lenses.

I disagree. I'm on the opposite side of it. I prefer less human shaped lenses (eye size). With white contact lenses, you get the white eyes but he still looks human. While I could modify his cowl to potentially work with the lenses above, my goal was to fit it with the existing one. It's really though to find a good balance between practical and spectacular looking. White contact lenses do nothing in terms of protection. I'll see what other shape I can come up with. It will have the opposite effect though, his forehead will look huge with smaller lenses. At least based on that image.

I just don't think the white eyes are ever going to work on screen. Looks too...don't know the words, out there or something or bloated. Well...I'm gonna say constipated.

Didn't seem to work for Green Lantern in live action either. For the record though, the mask could have looked better, or even cooler for that matter.

People, people...you all are thinking too practically here! Yes a physical cowl sculpted with the Jim Lee eye slits would be made for certain instances, but the majority of the time it would be added in digitally. I'd think theyd have an open-faced cowl for the actor to perform in, with motion capture dots on his brow, cheeks, and forehead. I know it would look odd in set photos, but at the industry's technical level these days (and this wouldnt happen for a few years Id say) the finished product would be exactly what we've all been talking about wanting. It could be done no question. I just think it hasnt so far because why put up with that added cost when all the GA has ever seen on screen is a cowl with eye holes amd racoon eye paint? Why spend that extra money to cater to that small fanbase who would even care about the eyes? Well, I for one think it could be done, should be done, and eventually, will be done.

They could do white lenses digitally, but I don't think they should try to pull off what Deadpool is doing, where most likely his facial expressions will show up on his actual mask. Batman doesn't have that kind of cowl. But, if it were rigid, and his facial expressions weren't showing up through the cowl, then I'd be all for going that route, BatFan1979.

When you can't see his pupils, especially if the white eyes look more natural (like eyes with no pupils) instead of glowing white, it removes a bit of the humanity from him, enhancing the creature of the night appearance.

My thought on the white eyes is that Snyder may do a little CGI in post, where Batman is in the shadows and you see the white eyes for a couple of iconic images, but we probably won't see them in the light.

I definitely don't want glowing. Basically as all the previous filmmakers have done, just have a play with lighting to highlight the eyes part and make them be more prominent. The idea for the lenses i had in mind was just a material like 3M that bounces off light, making it easier to get that look. The digital technique sounds good too, but i'm scared after the **** job they did with Green Lantern's mask. That was horrible!

Also, that Wonder Woman art is just beyond beautiful! :hmr:

Edit: How's this by the way gents?

Closer. The more angular rather than rounded works better.

Much better IMO! I'd go even more squinty (like Jim Lee's art), but only assuming the eyes are digital and won't impede the actors' vision. Good work:woot:
