The avergae comic nowadya is considered a hit if it sells 100,000 copies a MONTH. In its hey day Shonen jump sold over 8 MILLION copies a WEEK.
Even factoring in the head start I say its possible especially considering the decline in popularity of comics at the tail end of the golden age and Spider-man and Marvel thoroughly ass kicking Superman and DC during the silver age
Definately head to head Shonen Jump trounces superman to this very day
Like I said before, you have to consider the cultures involved here. Japaneese culture is more visual (as to why their alphabet uses characters instead of letters) whereas Western cultures are more textual. Therefore, picture books are all the rage in Japan and hence sell in such high volume. On the other hand that is not the case in Western cultures. If you'll notice Shonen Jump manga sells for around (US) $10 in the west compared to about $2-$3 in Japan. This is due to the high volume of books that are sold in Japan versus the west (the publisher can afford to sell it for less and still make a still make his profit). This still doesn't mean that Superman is not anymore popular. Keep in mind that the Superman franchise consists of more than just a few long running comicbook titles. It is also merchadising, television showsm and films (something that Goku and DB has yet to catch up to). When Son Goku gets to 40+ years and reaches icon status, then you can start challenging Supermans popularity. Outside of that, this is all I can say about a match-up between the two:

. Just because you can destroy things does not equate into being able to win in battle. That takes the combination of strength, skill, and cunning (smarts). In the world of fiction though, popularity is also a significant intangeable that will decide the outcome, which I think Superman has hands down.
