Okay, time to review Incredible Hulk #103. The shop I go to has a (probably illegal) policy of selling the copies of issues that shouldn't be on shelves for another week or so which they get as displays, so I've gotten the last two issues of Hulk a bit early. It's wonderful.

Anyway, the Spikes drain so much from Hulk that he briefly turns to Banner, but is hidden under a blanket, so nobody realizes it. Later, Elloe and Miek lead an attack on the loyalists to the late Red King, until one is revealed as Elloe's mother. She and Miek argue about what to do with her, and end up set to fight in the Arena. As they begin, Hulk jumps into the ring, and tells them that if they want to fight, they have to fight him. Moments later, he has weapons sticking out from all over his body. He tells Elloe, Miek, and all the Pinkies and Bugs with them that they are warbound, and makes them embrace. Miek is pissed about this, and broods about it, fittingly, to Brood (which we may as well use as his name). As this happens, the Shadow Elders come to work out a new Shadow Pact with King Hulk, and they mention reinstating Caiera as the Shadow Guard. Hulk rejects this, and says that he doesn't want a guard, he wants a queen. Caiera blushes. Later, the two engage in a Shadow wedding ceremony, in which Hulk complies with her request to bare all of himself by revealing Bruce Banner. Caiera moves in to kiss Bruce, and he quickly is reverted back to the Hulk. While they have super-strong monster/alien sex (btw, is this the first time Big Green has gotten laid or what?), Miek and Brood discover not only the ship Hulk came to Sakaar on, but the message sent to him by the Illuminati. It ends with Miek deciding to use this to get Hulk's attention, and make him punish the Pinkies for all they did to the Bugs.

10/10, as always.

Uncanny X-Men # 483 - Basically, Vulcan and Deathbird get it on, and she gets him to revive D'Ken. Hilarity ensues.

I already love having Strange on the team, **** I already love the New New Avengers, does anybody feel the same. Also eventhough Spidey is back in Black, he still has his sense of humor, which is good to see. Because we dont need another Penance/Speedball.

I've been a fan of this book since the start, and now that Yu's the permanent artist, I'm digging it even more.

New Avengers- PICK OF THE WEEK! Great start. Great art. Great dialogue. Elektra getting

What's not to love? 9/10

Dark Tower- Now, I don't know a bloody thing about this series. I've never read any of the books. But this is a fantastic way to pull me in. Isanove is the best colorist in the business, and when you give him a superstar like Jae Lee to work with, you have a thing of beauty. This issue is gorgeous! The story is pretty intriguing, too. Plus there's a ton of bonuses and the only ads are for Marvel stuff. Sold on the next issue. 9/10

Ant-Man- Fun, as always. This is really a crazy book, and everyone should give it a try. Hester's a wonderful artist, and the book's twists are nothing short of amazing. Kirkman needs to be commended not only on the way he successfully juggles two periods of time, but on the way he's still able to surprise the readers. I really hope this book catches on, because it's really enjoyable. 8/10

FNSM- Ok, the plot's not going to win any awards for it's "oh-so-convenient timing", but it was still a good issue. Flash and Peter had some fantastic interaction, and it's interesting to see the world react to Peter being a wanted man. I really hope Flash isn't selling Peter out. That would really ruin a great character moment they had between them this issue. 8/10

Ultimate Spider-Man- Wah wah. Bendis bashing is getting to be as predictable as Austen bashing. Anywho, I liked this issue. It ties things up well, and it leaves enough threads for several more arcs. I didn't like

seeing MJ and Peter get back together. Will Peter even TELL Kitty?

It was also nice seeing May retain her memory of Peter's secret. I was kinda hoping Gwen would get a chance to stick around. Well, she's still alive, in a way. 8/10

Uncanny X-Men- Not bad. The Vulcan issues are never as interesting as the others, though. Didn't see Vulcan's relationship coming. That was pretty surprising. Should lead to some interesting developments as this arc wraps up. 7/10

I also saw Jeff Smith's Shazam mini. I might have to pick up the trade, it looks pretty good.

New Avengers #27:

some will say bendis is overrated these days (he is). some will people won't be able to get over the ninjas. some people will cry foul over echo/ronin.

but this is actually a really good issue. it might not be great, but it's certainly entertaining.

the book begins with echo's e-mail to matt, which we've all seen in the previews. while the civil war has been going on, maya's been stuck in japan, not really knowing what do, as she's been sort of forgotten about. she plays the party-girl-socialite by day, getting close enough to the gangsters to learn their secrets, and by night assumes the ronin identity and takes them down. and because it's nearly impossible to do a japanese gangster story without the use of the hand, they appear too, this time being lead by elektra. ronin/echo and elektra fight, and while maya holds her own for awhile, she's defeated and captured by elektra and an army of hand ninjas. while she's being held, she knows what's coming. elektra tells her that it was honor to battle her, and that she will do that hand proud.

and then the "new" new avengers save the day.

fronted by luke cage, wolverine, iron fist, dr. strange, spider-woman and ronin easily hold off the hand while spider-man searches for and finds maya. they escape through a portal opened up by strange, while iron fist (his powers reinforced by strange) punches the ground, and knocks the ninjas back long enough to escape. the issue ends with elektra telling the hand to make sure the avengers do NOT leave japan.

now, a lot of people are upset that this is not "classic" avengers. they're right, it's not. but this does have a classic feel. aside from echo and ronin, every member of this team reached their peak in the late 70's early 80's. that and the fact that spidey's in his black costume (which yu knocks out the park) makes me feel like i'm reading a awesome back issue. also, this takes place after civil war, so there's that breath of fresh air that the story's can continue without the restriction of a crossover.

and speaking of yu...if you're going to have a street-level team of marvel heroes, i don't think there's anyone better suited to handle the art chores. he's flat out amazing. the two page spread in which the team first appears together is desktop wallpaper worthy (and i take my wallpaper VERY seriously).

bendis's dialogue is a lot better than it sometimes is, too. there's no: "yeah?"
"yeah."
"you sure?"
"pretty sure."
"like how sure?"
"like 99.7 percent sure."
"huh...wow...that's pretty sure."
and so on. there's banter, mostly between iron fist, spidey and cage, and it's all written well. my only complaint is that there's not a lot interaction between danny and luke, but we have plenty of time for that.

my only real complaint is the inclusion of iron fist. i love the character, love his history with cage and love all the attention he's getting of late, but i don't his being an avenger to interfere with his solo title. i'm really enjoying iron fist's series, as it explores danny's new role in the marvel universe. that book's too good for this series to **** with.

all in all, i was impressed. i'll have faith in bendis one more time even though it's against my better judgement.

Dark Tower #1:

i'll start by saying i've never read the dark tower series. i don't think i've ever read a king book, now that i think about it. i say this because i can't comment on how faithful this mini is and is going to be to the original. i'm taking it for what it is.

it's good. it's a really, really good issue.

peter david's flow is PERFECT. in one issue we get the introduction of the cast of characters and their backgrounds, AND a fight, AND the plot moves forward. and none of it seems fast-paced of slow-pace. it just...flows.

it sets up roland, the kid who will one day become "the gunslinger". his father is the lord of the land, and his mother's a ****e. specifically, a ****e to martin boradcloak, the sorcerer who advises roland's dad. after roland catches them doing the naughty, he decides it's time to end his training and become a gunslinger (i'm assuming to repair his father's tarnished name and kill broadcloak).

to do so, he has to battle his teacher, cort, and defeat him. his weapon of choice is his hawk, david. they easily overpower cort, and cort gives roland the keys to the armory where roland can pick out a gun. the issue ends with someone sneaking into roland's room, shooting roland's gun out of his hand, and revealing himself to be roland's dad (who looks a little unhappy).

david's script, like i said, is very tight. it seems there's nothing that couold have been edited out, and nothing that needs to be explained further at this point. i haven't read anything by PAD in a while, and this was a reminder to why he's such a great writer.

now the art. this was the aspect of the series that marvel hyped the most (besides that one guy that wrote the original books). i'm probably going to be ripped to shreds for this, but the art is dissappointing. and it is in NO WAY jae lee's fault. lee is great. i just don't like isanove that much. i think he's overrated, and i think his over use of oranges, purples and yellows is nauseating. and it's not that he makes lee's artwork bad, it's just that he fails to impress me like marvel wants him to. i will say the he does a good job at rendering lee's work to make it look real, but his choice of colors kills me. i like jae's work best when it's colored by jose villarrubia. but that's just me.

crappy coloring aside, this was a super start. between this, silent war, beyond!, agents of atlas and dr. strange, marvel's out doing themselves in the miniseries department. make the spider-man and x-men books readable, and i'll be happy.
