Probably less than you think. The man constantly scores when he writes a solo hero, yeah, (or a "partners" deal, like Cap & Falcon, Cage & Jessica, etc). You said this part! You thought about it, and you said it. But the thing about a team book is that there are many characters, and with so many, he can write numerous "solo" stories, focusing on different characters all the time, and as such, not run into the staleness that you so often berate him for on his solo books. Which, by the way, you totally rip him for. So basically, in your posts in this thread, you're arguing that Bendis should be REMOVED from team books, though you compliment New Avengers for being well-written, and KEPT on solo books, even though you hate USM. I think, good sir, that you are confused.
Kaka Barfsex. (to lower this post to my usual standard.)
No, I feel he should be kept on solo books that he works well on, and on books when he works well on, when he runs out of ideas and calls it a day, he should. His DAREDEVIL run was good despite going with the ol' Frank Miller schtick, "How can we ruin Murdock's life". Bendis made it work and juiced the hell out of DAREDEVIL. But he knew when to call it a day on DD and leave with his head held high. He was good on USM in the beginning, but obviously to me after 95+ issues he is out of steam, and that really isn't such a bad thing if he could only admit it and either get a co-writer or move on.
Most fans have an "all or nothing" belief in a writer's skill. That either a writer writes every story well or every story poorly, regardless of genre, subject, etc. While I admit that I am hardest on Bendis perhaps because he IS Marvel's #1 writer (I mean you bet your arse the opposing team always fouls the #1 player on the opposition), but he doesn't work the same on any and every title. He is best in solo books with some urban pulp/noir where he has a lot of flexibility with the continuity, but like any person he can run dry and it is in leaving the stage when we are still cheering that one knows true taste.
There is no shame in admitting after over 90 issues, you are tapped. But for god's sake, admit it! That is my issue with him on USM.
As for NEW AVENGERS, it is the #1 book in the industry, and at this point on hype alone an illustrated laundry list would sell. Bendis' CW issues and one-shot SPECIAL were the best issues of NA for me. The rest were mediocrity.
