Bought/Thought 30/01/08

I read the first few issues of that Darkseid arc, which sucked enough that I dropped it. Then I flipped through the last issue because Aquanewb was on the cover and I'm in Aquaman-withdrawal. They completely mischaracterized Aquanewb and I was reminded that this arc is literally about Superman and Batman taking a road trip to destroy all the Kryptonite on Earth. Which is a stupid idea for a story.

Actually Corp its pretty cool, i mean the art is good and the dialogue is spot on for bats and supes. I didn't realize that Aquanewb was being mis-characterized in any case the rest of the issue was pretty good and I think this is what S/B should be like. Oh and like ou I didnt read the Darkseid arc but for different reasons.

I really wish I'd started collecting Captain America back when it started with Brubaker. But, unfortunately, I was just starting my comic collection then, and I was never a big Cap reader when I was younger.

I'm looking forward to picking up the omnibus, though. I just had to get the money so that I could afford buying it. Now that I have, I definitely intend to. I just need to remember to look for it when I'm at my comic store, and hopefully it's not beat up. I need the Ultimates 2 hardcover, too, to match my Ultimates 1 hardcover.

I'm a bit obsessive compulsive when it comes to my bookcase. Things have to match. Should I wait for another CA hardcover, or buy it in trades - so it'd go hardcover, then paperback trade, then another, etc. - or just get the omnibus hardcover and then start the serialized issue collection?

Oh, choices, choices.

It has been 9 issues since where the Omnibus ended. I am fairly certain a few of those issues will get a trade quickly. I know where you are coming from. I collected issues from after issue #25 as soon as I could, anticipating liking it enough to do so. I was able to read the first few issues after #25 immediately that way.

- Some bits in NEW AVENGERS ANNUAL #2 that I missed commenting on. At one point, Piledriver (I believe) or one of the Wrecking Crew says, "I hate magic." This was during the Tigra-question scene. Now, this seems rather stupid considering they are all EMPOWERED by magic. Not only that, they just escaped from Canada where some newer demonic magic allowed them to jolly-stomp Sasquatch and nearly kill off Omega Flight. That's like She-Hulk saying, "I hate gamma radiation", or Superman saying, "I hate sunlight."

Haha, this is so true

I'm figuring my store is small-time enough that he probably has the issues from 25 on, though I could be wrong. I know he sold out of 25 pretty quickly, given the buzz that was. 26 and on, though, I'm not totally sure.

Hardcover on bookcase plus issues in comic boxes, or hardcover plus trades for pretty ordering on the bookcase but evil delays whilst waiting for trades? Boo, hiss.

It'll probably come out to the individual issues, actually. It's the better way to support the industry and store-owner.

Oh, I've been reading Captain America from day one. I just never bought it.

Apollo gave her half of his power...not Atlas' power.
You don't even know wtf is going on Willy. You aren't allowed to review Trials anymore. You're love of what was before has blinded you to what's actually going on.
Pfah. It's really Winick's fault when you think about it really hard

.

Seriously, he added an extra god into the pantheon? Doesn't that make it Shazaam, now? How does it even make sense for someone to be Atlas' acolyte if Atlas no longer exists?

Haha, this is so true

Indeed.

Still, if you look at the second annual as "issue #37 rehashed, only with better art", then it is an improvement.

You may have problems with issue #34. That sold out quick at my local shop. I had to chase it.

Some of the issues after #25 were overordered a bit so you may be able to find some of them. I found most of them rather easily, although I do have an option such as Manhattan shops to rely on. Most others don't.

Very well. I do agree with you that quality has to be searched for and then encouraged.

The first "Death of Cap" hardcover (#25-30) is already out, I believe.

At first I was just giving it time to see it if it was gonna be a consistently good book, but then Civil War happened and obviously I'm proud to say that, to date, I haven't paid a single cent for any CW-related material whatsoever.

EDIT: Nevermind, I bought the YA/Runaways stuff. 'Twas a lie.

Gotcha. I have those issues so I wasn't aware. So, there you go, El Bastardo.

S'okay. I forgive you. ;)

But then I'd technically own #25 twice. I'd end the omnibus reading it, and then start the next hardcover reading it. And that would be zany!

damn. my LCS didn't order Action Comics, so i had to ask another shop to hold a copy for me. now, i have to wait for Saturday to pick my copy up. thankfully, not too many people read this series, so i don't have to avert my eyes from any reviews.

My shop somehow didn't get half the comics it was supposed to so I have yet to get Avengers:Initiative, Green Lantern, Daredevil, Captain America, Brave & Bold, Proof, and probably some other stuff I can't think of right now...

That would be zany, but it should also be cheaper than 4 back issues solo. That would be about $12 or more if your shop charges for bags & boards. Unfortunately, retail price is $19.99. Marvel has milked Brubaker's run a lot in the trade dept, often offering HC's before lower priced trades for 5-6 issue bits. DC at least tries to keep trades more affordable. That kept me away before the first Omnibus. There were almost no trades for Cap for years, just HC after HC which are more expensive. By the time the trades came, the Omnibus was already in the works so I just waited further.

Unfortunately, you would have to wait for a few years before the second Omnibus happens.

I suggest Amazon or eBay (for some deals on the HC's) or back issue hunting.

I was thinking Amazon originally, but I tend to get semi-beat-up books when I order from there, and that makes me sad.

Besides, even if I have to pay full prize, at least that supports my LCS!

Yeah, true. Supporting my LCS helps keep me buying NEW AVENGERS after all. :p

I'm not sure that should go in the pro column!

No, it shouldn't. I hate that book. It is everything wrong with comics, but I can't leave it. I like a forewarning of crap to come line-wide, which it always has.

You know, you could get the same just from reading the stuff on here. I've never bought a single issue of Mighty or New Avengers, but I manage to keep up with what's going on just fine.

I know, but my *****ing is detailed. I am sure eventually it will be lousy to the point of no return, like USM did, that I will reject it in disgust. Sadly, it hasn't gotten quite there yet.

Ahh. Well, see, that's why you should work in a comic store then :cwink: When I worked at Downtown Comics in Indy, I spent all day Sunday reading every single comic book in the store. Hell, the owner encouraged it, lol. Meant I never had to waste money on comics I was only mildly interested in.

Yeah, I wish I did, too.

Ahh, you live in NYC, right? There must be a ton of comic shops around there. Just start asking around, see if any need someone to fill in some odd hours. That's how I got a job. About five months after I first asked, the owner was like "Hey, you still interested in a job?"

To this day, I still think it was the best job I ever had, even if the pay was crap, heh.

I live in Brooklyn. Travel into Manhattan takes about an hour or more and the local shops really don't need any people. Traveling over an hour by subway seems to be fruitless for a gig that will most likely pay barely over minimum wage here, even if it is comics. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

UXM too, right? You used to read UXM but Kirkman scared you away, if I remember right. (I read your reviews.)

Did you check out UXM90 at all? And if not, did you see my thoughts on the first page? (Shameless plug!)
