Bought/Thought for 9/13/06: Spoilers Contained Within! Etc...

Man, no offense, but it really must be a slow comic week. :o
You should read Hulk so when I get it later today we can have a clashing of words. You with quantity on your side, I with insults, and possibly decent points, but mostly insults.

Quiet, you'll get Cap a dishonourable discharge.

Is it really dishonorable? I was led to believe you weren't dishonorably discharged if you're homosexual.

I really gotta update my pull-list. Seems like I miss out on something every week. Last week it was FNSM, this week it's New X-Men.

Transformers Spotlight: Shockwave- PICK OF THE WEEK! They really should put all these minis and one-shots that take place in the center continuity in the main series, because not only are they important, but they're also really good. This is easily one of Furman's best works since he came to IDW. This issue is a clear homage to the original Marvel series, but with a dash of Beast Wars and a few new ideas. The re-imagining of the Dino... excuse me, Dynobots, is pretty awesome. I like how Furman incorporated the origin of the Maximal and Predacons animal modes into the Dynobots'. Considering that IDW is trying to update the franchise, it makes perfect sense. Great art, too. 9/10

Captain America- Civil War has been making me feel a bit disconnected with this book. It's hard to get into with Cap running around as a fugitive in another book. Brubaker ends the arc on a high-note by really making me want to see where these characters are going next. Lots of seeds are planted (including Bucky "coming out"), and I'm really eager to see how the Skull and his crew take advantage of the chaos of Civil War. 9/10

Ms. Marvel- They should just call this "Mighty Avengers", because it feels like a prelude. That's definitly a good thing. You can already see how this is setting up events in Bendis' upcoming series, but you can also see some set-up for Omega Flight, too. Oh yeah, and the story's not too bad, either. I like the idea of Avengers Trainees, and Reed's actually making me care for Arana. How weird is that? 9/10

FNSM- Man, what an awesome final page. The mystery is pretty interesting. Hopefully David will give it a satisfying conclusion. Three Mysterios is cool for now, but hopefully we'll have one by the end. I liked Peter's optimism, too. It was funny seeing him act so casual about the situation. 8/10

Excaliber- I can't wait until Ryan takes over Runaways. His stuff is really dynamic. That two-page spread of the dragons was pretty awesome. Tieri's character interaction is pretty good, too. He's actually making me enjoy Pete Wisdom. 8/10

Wolverine: Origins- The beautiful covers are incredible incentive to buy this series. The plot's ok, but a bit slow-moving at times. But the covers... Qusada's great on the normal ones, but they really get some great superstar talents for the variants. This month's McGuiness variant rocks my socks. It was lame to see the ending telegraphed, though. 7/10

Also bought Civil War Files. Only read a couple entries, but it's pretty cool.

No, you're dishonorably discharged on if you're a homosexual.

The Incredible Hulk #477 is the only thing I got this week, but I have yet to read it.

:csad:

Phonogram #2 was great. This becoming my favorite book. I love the dialog and band name drops.

Is that the one with the cover to "it's great when you're straight...yeah!" or "suede" ?

Waiting on the Hardcover. I'm not a big Hulk fan, but it sounds like a good ride.

After briefly re-reading a Bought/Thought from a YEAR ago that was mysteriously ressurrected for the sole purpose of complaining that All-Star Batman is shipping late, I've found the correct thread. But I've only got three books I can review, since the others I bought, I'm behind on. Anyways, ...

Ultimate X-Men is a fickle little book, and my stand that Kirkman is spreading himself too thin remains. Unlike Invincible, which has story elements so intricately woven in that I have to read most issues more than once to retain everything, UXM has all the finesse and subtlety of a brick. If someone were to throw a brick at you in front of a large crowd, only to casually stroll up to you and relay the message that you've been hit by a brick via megaphone, it might still occur to you that not everything is as it seems. Such is not the case with the leather-clad mutants. Not only is everything exactly as you might have predicted, but the reveal is followed by page after page of exposition, informing you that you've been hit in the head by a large, heavy brick with "Ultimate X-Men" written on the side in Sharpie. On top of this is a full page of Wolverine moping, and Sabretooth hiding behind a tree. For what purpose? To set up a storyline for the future. Which storyline? Who cares.

At least it was pretty to look at.

Arkham Asylum: Living Hell at last we meet. The flashbacks could have used a little more notice, as there were parts when I was unsure which time we were in, and exactly how much time has elapsed to tell this full story. Other than that, Slott has done no wrong, and you would be a fool not to pick this book up. On top of Etrigan the Demon's heavy involvement, two of the most bizarrely enigmatic Batman rogues get lots and lots of focus. Namely, Doodlebug, who just has a neat design, similar to BTAS' Firefly, and Humpty Dumpty, a man-child with such a unique outlook on life, you can't help but like him.

Did I mention Etrigan the Demon's in it?

Lastly, ... Pride of Baghdad. Vaughan is one of my favorite writers in comics today, and probably ever. I'm not sure how much of his writing is a forced sense of style, or if he's generally just a cool guy with a penchant for pop culture references. I'm leaning towards the latter. Inspired by actual events in 2003, one lion, two lionessess, and one male cub run around a warzone, get seperated, get reunited, seperate again, meet turtles, fight monkeys, and generally prove to be amazingly human. I loved it. Every single word and every single image on every single page. This was the reason I went to my LCS today, and I read it first, hoping that I could read my other books, sit down, review them, and come up with something intelligent to say about it, but there's just no reason to say more than "wow".

Wow.

---

Like I said, I picked up DMZ, Devi, Rokkin, and Cassanova as well, but I haven't read past the first couple issues of DMZ, or past the first issues of Devi, Rokkin, and Cassanova, so I'll hold those reviews for another time.

I really want to get Pride of Baghdad. For the next month or so I have to get my books on Saturday, so if my shop still has a copy, I am so getting it.

What happened in planet hulk!?!?!,i can't believe i missed this one,

Not very much, wildjokers

Pretty thin ish as far as story goes, and not enough good stuff to fill in the empty space. Basically set-up for a big fight next ish. Not a bad issue by any means, just not up to Pak's standard

hmmm...thanks,thats a little disappointing to hear.i'll still probably get it.

Are you kidding? They show the origin of the Emperor's Shadow guard, the Hulk starts to have a mental breakdown, attacks Miek, and it's one of the only times ever that someone calms the Hulk down before it's too late. Then they finally get down to the fight between the Shadow and Hulk, but before they can finish, the long referred to Spikes are launched (secretely by the emperor), into the heart of the field.

Planet Hulk and Cap kicked ass this week.
