The Force Awakens Box-Office: Star Wars Episode VII vs Avatar 2

And who the hell said that Avatar was the new Star Wars? Never heard that one.

a lot of idiots. looks around on the internet for a couple minutes. it kind of makes sense in terms of a massive turn out over never before seen special effects, but other than that it doesn't really make sense.

People have been trying to find a new Star Wars since the original trilogy ended, i've heard people call that to Matrix, Avatar, and even the Halo video games. In my opinion the only new franchise that has been able to find a similar kind of cult following and interesting universe is Harry Potter.

Yeah, I see the articles about it now. Yeah, there are similarities to SW when you look at the revolutionary special effects and massive turn out. Other than that, you're right, it doesn't really make sense.

Star Wars

i'd even pick the mediocre prequels to Avatar ANY day

I think Avatar wins this round, it's got great momentum. And Cameron beats everyone but Spielberg for creating action spectacles that connect with an audience.

Blegh, I think if Avatar 2 beats anything outside of Tyler Perry at the box office, I'll be inwardly depressed.

honestly after not 1 not 2 but 3 terrible star wars movies in a row do you honestly expect it to break records these days?

even spiderman which was a box office juggernaut had it's reboot do less than previous films with just 1 bad film

The Transformers franchise is getting more panned than Star Wars and it's automatically getting 2 more installments.

Critics may like to make people think the PT was a failure, but it wasn't. People like it just fine and the money RotS made after 2 supposed disasters (TPM and AotC) was sweet and hot.

it wasn't a failure fancially but really, it's just not what it could have been.

People do not like the Prequels "just fine". They're very well known as being a series of bad movies that people just went to see because they had Star Wars in the title.

General public likes the prequels, contrary to what the Internet swears.

How else does one explain all three films earning $300M+ domestic, Phantom Menace opening well in its 3D reissue and the solid Blu-Ray sales on the trilogy sets?

Exactly, most people i know have no problems with the prequel trilogy. Critics are just louder in the internet.

I dont know what people are talking about. The PT is widely regarded to be abysmal...and rightfully so. Avatar on the other hand, is not. Uninspired and cliche? Definitely, but it wasn't considered a horrible movie (even though people on the internet love to be overdramatic about it whenever its brought up but remember the rest of the world doesnt really care about box office numbers like this so there isnt so much animosity towards Avatar)

Although ROTS was a step in the right direction, it was too little too late. Star Wars is obviously a bigger franchise overall than Avatar. No comparison. But it would be ridiculous to assume its going to break records when there were three films that were far from stellar (no pun intended)....and considering how disappointing the prequels were, they did VERY well at the box office regardless. I'm not sure any other trilogy could've had the same box office results with three disappointing films -- so obviously the star wars franchsie is far from dead. However, this one is just not going to be a record breaker. It'll still make big money for sure but Avatar 2 has this beat EASILY. I think episode 8 is going to break all sorts of records if episode 7 is recieved well.

I liked teh prequels, call me odd. But I liked them just fine. :)

We all have to remember.

There is a whole generation of little kids who grew up with the prequels. Like we did with the original trilogy.

I think now there are multiple generations of fans with the addition of The Clone Wars. I was lucky enough to watch the originals on VHS long before the prequels came out. I only wish I saw them on the big screen!

If TPM had been just a blank screen with no film it would have made $200m before the word got round. The figures are obviously good as it's coming off the biggest amount of hype for any film ever.

A Star Wars that lives up to the legacy is one that is loved universally (& favourite film(s) for many) as the OT was plus has cutting edge Avatar standard effects that push film technology forward. The Avatar tech (crazy risk with a new property) was much better for its day than the crappy-CGI prequels were. If long term fans can forgive & forget any negatives linked to the prequels & take forward the positives only (of which there are also many), I think the potential of a new Star Wars film is no.1 unadjusted domestic (& this was the potential of TPM also before it came out). Scale that down by however much it fails to reach the quality benchmark by.

I was one of them, i became a fan thanks to Episode III, most of my friends are from this generation and didn't have any problem with the Prequels

watch redlettermedia and youll understand. Not to mention there was a whole generation of kids who loved them, myself included. I loved the phantom menace when it came out, i always hated Jar Jar but I loved the movie. I named my Dog Obi-Wan because I thought he was so cool in that movie even. I also loved the originals, but I preferred the prequels for their action. However as I have grown up the originals keep getting better and the prequels keep getting worse.

To say that a movie is loved because it made money is a fallacious assumption.

Pretty much. The critics and many (if not most) fans hate the PT, but the general public does "like them just fine".

He said TPM made money in its re-release. After 13 years, where things have settled and people think TPM is abysmal (or so some would have people think), you'd expect a re-release of an abysmal movie to have tanked. Well it didn't.
