So Tyler conducts his own music, huh? The only other composers I can think of at the top of my head who also conduct are Goldenthal, Goldsmith, and Williams.

Most composers conduct their own music. James Newton Howard, Thomas Newman, Hans Zimmer, Howard Shore, James Horner all conduct their scores. Even Elfman has been known to do it. It's not rare by any stretch.

I've had people conduct my music before. I hated it, you feel so out of control...I think things would have gone better if I had conducted.

But it's definitely a skill you have to develop and it's extra work to prepare to conduct an orchestra. Like practicing your part.
