Captain Marvel Brie Larson is Captain Marvel!

I just dislike when the superhero genre makes some rando more powerful than the gods.
I don't even like it when Superman, who's just a random alien lucky enough to live under yellow sunlight, tanks Darkseid. But at least with Superman they've done a lot of narrative heavy lifting about how humans perceive him as a Christ figure or a false god.

Carol's basically semi-demi-quasi-"God" level in the books anyway, though. She's not actually-for-really-real a God, but could go toe-to-toe with a majority of Asgardians or whatever, and the most badass Kree out there in Ronan.

*Shrugs* If she slightly edges out Thor & Hulk here for the movies, who cares? We've had Iron Man go toe-to-toe with Thor for like a minute, this is nothing even approaching that level. At least Carol's supposed to be right up there with the big guns.

Well I didn't know this. I thought Carol's comics powers were just the ones Rogue had in the '90s X-Men cartoon but not the films or Evolution. I had no idea that holding her own against a Norse god was comics canon.
I still don't like it when Superman does it and Carol has definitely had less narrative heft about being godlike than Superman.
"She's our most powerful character! She can move planets!" just seems an ill-considered marketing campaign. Power levelhas nothing to do with what makes a person interesting, unless the narrative focuses on how their power affects the world, like a pagan god, Superman or Dr. Manhattan.

she can fight fodder Asgardians and beat some mid tiers like Sif but obviously not Thor or Odin.

I mean, one of the main themes of this movie is to portray someone so powerful being relatable, hence why the talk about her strength every time.

Seems pretty big-deal to me. Thor's only got two on-screen feats comparable to most of that, in AoU and IW. Each can brawl around with Hulk, each can fly, survive in space, each has huge energy attacks of sorts.

But again, even if they elevate her more than the books, it's still going to be nowhere near as egregious as Tony in the first Avengers flick. People are up-in-arms about nothing, Carol's supposed to be really hardcore. In a knock-down-drag-out fight with Thor, even if Thor won it he'd be bruised & bloody & wondering what the hell just went down by the end of it. If he's more powerful in the books, it's pretty negligible, not by much. And all said and done, she'd likely beat Big Green. We'll probably see her kick Ronan's ass in the film, and even without a stone Ronan's a pretty major player, the Guardians as a whole group wouldn't have been able to take him down physically if it weren't for the stone going ape****.

Yeah, I personally think people have been downplaying Carol’s power levels for years, possibly because they simply don’t like her or because she hasn’t had an iconic run to “justify” her being qualified as a powerhouse. But when you list the feats she’s performed in the comics over the years, they paint a picture of a pretty mega-powerful being. They might not match up to the greatest feats Thor has performed in the comics, but they certainly eclipse any feats of MCU Thor or Hulk thus far. So if Marvel is looking for a marquee female hero to elevate to the tier of their most godly male characters to compensate for slacking in that department for decades, Carol seems like the most sensible choice, as it wouldn’t really be that much of a stretch from her comics version anyway.

I agree that they don't have any more powerful heroines, save maybe Sersi of the Eternals. I just think their marketing of her is terrible. It makes her sound like a boring Superman expy, as or less interesting than Goku.

Oh no, that was before Carol became Binary. Pre-Binary Carol wasn't even as strong as modern Carol, who in turn is weaker than Binary.

CaptainMarvel, I don't even know she's all that much weaker in a straight comics-to-comics comparison. Thor's obviously a huge deal, and when you factor in the portals and Odinforce stuff he's probably got a slight edge in variety of powers.

But like, strength-wise, no Odinforce, just physicality & flying & energy attacks on each other? I dunno, books-Carol is going to give him a run for his money. Might not pull a win, but along with Hulk she'd be his closest competition on Earth.

And yeah, Flickchick, if you're potentially introducing an MCU character of human origin who's equal-to-or-more-powerful than Thor, Carol's clearly your go-to. Fanboys are going to whine regardless, but honestly I've been questioning how many of those types have ever read a comic anyway, heh. Screw 'em, go for it. Especially given she's been away for 20 Earth years and Fury's always seemed to know more than he's letting on, Carol being one ginormous monkey-fightin' deal just makes far too much sense here.

And MasterCat? That'd be because Carol basically is Marvel's Superman, powers-wise. Comparable, anyway. Steve'd be the personality, Carol the general superhero-y displays and iconography.

currently???

Thor is a weak ass and is replaced by some woman, a Mary Sue at that.

Thor at it's prime was beatable only by Sentry and WBH.

Odinforce Thor shouldn't even be compared to the heroes.

as for MCU, Fury did call her for a reason when everything is lost so she will definitely be the strongest.

I just hope that they do her origin which makes it more reasonable.

I admit it's been a while, but unless she can access her Binary form there's no way she can match Thor or the Hulk in a fight, ranged combat included unless both heroes have been depowered.

What exactly has changed since she recovered from being left in a coma by Rogue?

She accesses her Binary form fairly often these days. All it takes is a supercharge from one of her fellow energy-blasting heroes. But even in her lower "base" power mode in recent stories she has tossed large asteroids like they're nothing and made herself into a walking nuclear bomb, so...not too shabby either way.

People are overreacting to the “Carol will be the strongest avenger” statement. I do think that Carol is going to be the most powerful, but I also think that part of her story will be her learning how to use restraint when it comes to her powers. She’s not going to fly in and one punch thanos, but she is most likely going to play a key role in defeating him. I find it interesting that the same people who talk about how great the people behind the MCU films are have little no faith in the film that just so happens to be lead by a woman.

To add onto this further, lets take a look at what's set up here:

-They specifically left ALL of the Original Six Avengers alive at the end of IW. Every one of them, and Avengers 4 will likely be the last time that all of them appear in a film together.

-They kept characters like Ant Man, Valkyrie, etc alive as well.

-Thor has an axe that can cut through the power of the Infinity Gauntlet and wound Thanos (and it probably would have killed him to if Thor would have aimed for a different spot and not grandstanded so much).

-Etc.

Now taking all of this into account, is it easier to buy that it will take a team effort to finally defeat Thanos, or is it easier to believe that Captain Marvel will be the Mary Sue character who wins the day solo? Personally, I find the former to be FAR more likely than the latter.

Now could she act as an "equalizer" to a degree, sure. But that would make some level of sense, given that The Avengers and GOTG together couldn't stop Thanos, and now half of them are dead, including some of their strongest members (Dr. Strange, Scarlet Witch, Vision, etc).

So perhaps Carol will help even the odds, but I seriously doubt that she beats Thanos on her own. For example, perhaps she, or maybe her and Thor (with Stormbreaker) together are the ones who physically take on Thanos, while the others find a way to undo what he's done and neutralize the Infinity Stones power or something?

The point is, people are getting worked up over nothing right now.

How many people here have read Infinity Gauntlet? It's really bizarre to listen to theories about how the Avengers will beat the Gauntlet with brute force.

Somewhat off topic but looking at the current cast right now and it appears as though this film may end up being the first MCU film where the lead protagonist doesn't have a potential love interest. I'm kind of surprised since it always felt like it was one of the unsaid requirements for every MCU film in the past, even when the story could have done fine without one.

It sounds like you have issues beyond this. Like you’re actually angry at other things and you need to choose something to be angry about.

Sometimes anger is ok but make sure it’s directed to the right place. Whatever is making you angry, I’m sure it’s not really that Brie wants more diverse critics or to ward away future weinsteins. Does it actually make your life worse?

I definitely get angry at some stuff in my life and sometimes I point it at convenient targets rather than what’s actually making me angry. Just have a walk and try to think about what’s actually annoying you

Well thank you for your words, being somewhat familiar with you post history I believe you are sincere. I've said my bit on the matter and will say no more going forward

As I framed my arguments, calling for diversity is admirable, it's the way she went about doing it that bothered me. Not offensive on it's own, but not really well thought out beyond being an idealistic platitude. As a statement it just lingers. I won't get into things any deeper other then the real world and free market is messy and has consequences.

I never even thought about Weinstein in my posts, he can rot in a pit for all I care.

Dude, check the pictures cited above. A bunch of that is pretty clearly Thor-Hulk level stuff. She's at least in the same league/category - if they exaggerate her a little for the MCU, fine.

Hell, movie-Cap's a crapload stronger than traditional comics Cap is anyway. This wouldn't be the first time they've mixed things up for the films, and even then, at least it's not all that extreme a shift in Carol's case as she's in Thor's ballpark in the books in the first place.

Also it's not like they haven't been willing to adjust power levels for the movies already. As stated above MCU Cap is stronger than his comic book counterpart, as is Hela. Meanwhile Drax, Gamora, and Thor are weaker, and we don't even know what Hulk's upper-levels of strength are at this point.

Anything that corrects that walking abomination can only be a good thing!

Sorry I despise Sentry!
