The Dark Knight Rises Bruce Wayne's real face behind the mask. The mentally sick and the freak.

In Goyer's original BB script, he made a point of having Bruce paint around his eyes. Bruce had accidentally left on the raccoon eyes when he came up from the Batcave for his birthday party and Alfred had to remind him. So I guess it's not completely outside the realm of possibilities, but Nolan DID cut that part out, after all.

Didn't know that! Maybe it was the best thing to do in BB but in TDKR Nolan could use the raccoon eyes to make Bruce's fall even more... disgusting. If Bane tears aways the mask, "IF" Bane breaks Batman's back or any bone, etc, such a weird face would make for a better loser Bruce.

OP does bring up an interesting point. If batman gets the absolute piss beat out of him surely hes gonna be scarred on his face pretty badly. Will be interesting to see how they handle it. Nolan can go VERY dark with this one if he wants too.

I'm glad they didn't go with this.

Also, will the guyliner show or not?

Bruce Wayne doesn't paint his eyes. The actor Christian Bale does. His character doesn't. There is a difference! The eye paint is used for the obvious effect of keep the area around his eyes dark, so that everything is black. How ever, we are not meant to think that Bruce Wayne took 5 minutes to apply black make up around his eyes.

I can guarantee you that if we see his face right after the mask is torn off, he will not have any black make up around his eyes.

Agreed.

this doesn't fit in the costume thread because...............?

SHH amazes me greatly sometimes. A bruglar with heels on boots isnt realistic, but magical appearing/disappearing makeup is

There is nothing sick or freak with "war paint"
This would be fun to see though :awesome:

Regarding the makeup around the eyes, I loved in Batman : The Animated Series when there was an episode where Batman's mask was removed and he was wearing another mask underneath that covered his head down to his nose. I think maybe they can get away with that, no?

I agree with the Bale paints/Bruce doesn't comments.

As far as how they'll deal with the bruising from Bane, Bruce still has Gotham believe he's reckless and carefree, so explaining Bruce's injuries wouldn't be a problem at all.

In BB when Bruce and Alfred get the cowls they eye holes are actually all the way to tge area around the lids. I suspect that's an indication that it is not supposed to be, narratively, as open as we know they are.

I agree that we will probably won't see paint around his eyes. But i don't have any problem with him using paint. It's not like fashion or something. It gives him scarier look. Same reason why he dress like a bat.

That makes sense, but I think it's the easy way out.

I could imagine Nolan leaving the paint on, just to get the effect we saw above.

It's pretty obvious he paints around his eyes to keep out the glare. I just think films in the early 90's, were much less concerned with explanations.

Okay. Catwoman will be doing the same beneath her domino mask. Where does she fit in?

Actually, if you look at the spy pics, she doesn't paint her eyes black. It's one of the first things I noticed.

I expect it will be like Batman Returns. One minute it's there and the next it isn't. The worst part in that is that they decided to show his face for a second with normal eyes before ripping the mask off. They should have just cut either so his arm was over his eyes or the camera was behind him at the point of tearing off his mask.

It's silly when you think about it, but it's not as silly as coon-eyes. :D

I think that's just a shadow, cause look at these 2 - and one with Batman.

Honestly the general audience doesn't even notice the eye paint. It's only hard core fans and enthusiasts that pick up on stuff like this. If they were to have the racoon eyes, it would be jarring for the GA, for a moment at least. Most of the GA would be thinking "Wait, what's with the face paint? Are those bruises? Ohhh yeah the eyes".

It would be less jarring for them if he didn't have the eye paint. The GA honestly just doesn't think about this stuff.

I'm more curious if Bruce Wayne has an uneven face tan when he takes off his mask specially now that he's fighting in broad daylight. :o

I don't think she's got full on panda eyes, however I think there's a more subtle shading.
Either way, I only raised the issue to suggest that maybe eye-liner/paint isn't the best barometer of mental instability in Nolan's films.
