Fantasy Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel the Vampire - Part 3

With Buffy being 25, I thought I’d don’t a ranking list each day (be it top 5 characters, villains, episodes, etc). Yesterday I ranked Buffy seasons:

7) Season 4
6) Season 7
5) Season 6
4) Season 1
3) Season 5
2) Season 2
1) Season 3

What’s your ranking?

6 > 5 > 2 > 7 > 3 > 4 > 1

As far as seasons go, this is my ranking:

#1: Season 5
#2: Season 3
#3: Season 2
#4: Season 1
#5: Season 6
#6: Season 7
#7: Season 4

Glorificus and The Mayor seasons will always reign supreme to me.

Don’t think so after all I’ve heard over the years sadly, it’s like me still waiting for my DS9 Blu-Ray box set.

DS9 has different kind of issues with a remaster.

Season rankings:

1) Season 3 - The most consistent and consistently great season in my opinion. The show at its peak in basically every department. Introduces Faith, The Mayor and Anya to an already stacked cast of favourites, and a bunch of memorable episodes.

2) Season 5 - Not a perfect run but really good. The Body is a harrowing experience, still incredible in my book. This season really felt like Buffy's greatest challenge yet, and though Dawn wasn't always fun to be around, the sister dynamic really worked and changed the stakes. Glory was a great villain, just the right amount of quirk to the mystery and lore.

3.) Season 2 - This was tough to place here because I think the Angelus arc in the back half of the season is perhaps the show at its very best. The irony is not lost on me that Joss Whedon's feminist show seems to be really good at making Angel the most loathsome 'bad boyfriend' ever. Season 2 also has its share of rough spots though, more than the seasons above.

4.) Season 7 - Kinda surprised it's this high but I think I like Season 7 more than the average. It's a solid send-off season that gets a bit confused but sticks the landing pretty well. A mid-tier season, not frequently remarkable but also never awful.

5.) Season 1 - Super corny but the cast are charming and their friendship eases a lot of growing pains.

6.) Season 4 - It feels really harsh to put a season with 'Hush', 'A New Man' and 'Restless' this far down but that is season 4 for you. Really struggles to find its feet with new locations and a rotating cast. There are quite a few great episodes here, in a rudderless story that bet the farm on the Initiative and lost. Adam in particular is an uncharacteristically bland villain.

7.) Season 6 - This is the easiest to place for me. I don't like season 6. The musical is really well put together, and I think a handful of episodes are pretty good, but the season is mostly 'off' to outright bad. A miserable experience, normally intentional, sometimes unintentional; but always miserable.

Well that sucks.

That it does. Hopefully one day. If physical releases are going to survive at all I could see them shifting more toward collector markets. This might generate some more boxsets and varied releases.

Either that, or perhaps some nerd will crate definitive HD versions themselves at some point. Saying that with repesct to nerds and a fear that it'll be me doing that project somewhen.

Do you guys think there will be a blu ray remaster complete set of Buffy and Angel eventually? I think it’s way long overdue.

It definitely isnt happening now that Disney owns the series. They don't really care about remastering anything that isnt a Disney classic animated movie.

The fact that I live in a world where Charmed (that I love dearly) got a fairly gorgeous remaster before Buffy baffles me. AND they got a GORGEOUS complete series set (in Germany)

As a kid, I really liked Xander. In my latest rewatch, I think Xander acts very dumb a lot of times. Sure he has his shining moments (Season 6 final and One-of-a-kind dialog with Dawn in season 7), but his character didnt aged well. It still bother me that his lie in the season 2 final never get really adressed or had any consequences. I mean, because of him Buffy left Sunnydale after killing Angel.

Top 5 Characters? Hmmm…

My favorite of all time:

Who's your fave Buffy Villain?

Happy 25th to the icon.

I figured may as well do a top 10 episode list to celebrate. Plenty of great episodes that I didn't list here so don't kill me for not including Hush.

10 - Chosen (series finale): Not the best season finale in the series but it really delivers on all of the themes that make the show so timeless. Angel returning was a nice touch even if only for a small cameo. Extra bonus points for the epic score.

9 - I only have eyes for you (s2 ep19) - Wow is this the perfect blend of a self contained story that brilliantly melds into the bigger season arc? SMG's performance really stands out in this episode as her character arc comes full circle by the end.

8 - Band Candy (s3 ep6) - Ethan returns and Joyce/Giles have sex on the hood of a police car twice! Giles deserved a little love after the next episode on this list...

7 - Passion (s2 ep17) - Angelus is the best villain in the series for me so this has to be on the list.

6 - Once More with Feeling (s6 ep7) - "I'm under your spell"

5 - Normal Again (s6 ep17) - I know this one is divisive but I feel its a definitive episode in the show and opens up the pandora's box of is all of this just in Buffy's head? Very bleak episode with another standout performance by SMG.

4 - The Zeppo (s3 ep13) - The B story comes to the forefront while the battle for the end of the world is happening in the background. Brilliant spin on the Buffy formula and Chistopher Beck's score is just perfect.

3 - Restless (s4 ep22) - My favorite season finale in the series.

2 - Helpless (s3 ep12) - This might not make most fans top 10 but I just love the hell out of this episode. The exploration of identity is central to the story. Who is Buffy without her powers? Who is Giles without the Watcher's council? Oh and we finally get introduced to the Watcher's council.

1 - The Body (s5 ep16) - Probably one of the few episode I avoid re-watching because its so emotionally draining to watch but there's no denying this is a masterpiece. Probably one of the most raw depictions of an unexpected death and the shock that we all go through dealing with such an abrupt loss. The lack of music and those long and lingering shots really stand out. How did Emma Caufield not get an emmy nomination for this episode?

Speaking of villains, I tell about the elephant in the room: Who has Adam not as the last favorite villain? They didnt play out their cards well with him. He could easy end up a tragic character, who tried to fit in but doesnt belong to any of his kinds so he decided to make the world more like him.

Silly answer to the question about a favorit villain, but the real villain was always the life itself for me with all the challenges and growing up. Besides this I pick Glory, I really like her simple motivation to go home and not the typical "lets end the world" stuff.

Top Five Villains for me would be

1. Glory
2. Angelus
3. The Mayor
4. Drusilla
5. Warren

Still upset that bastard shot Tara. I cry all the time.

When it comes to Top Five Episodes, I would pick....

1. The Gift
2. The Body
3. Once More With Feeling
4. Doppelgangland
5. Innocence

Those were just classics all around.

Okay which episode should have been the series finale, The Gift or Chosen? I'm conflicted cause I found season six so depressing and 7 had good to great moments. Nathan's accent notwithstanding (satisfying end through).

Personally I think The Gift it just works with the sad nature of being a Slayer, and what a way to go dying for your friends and family and saving the world too boot!!!

He's not my favourite but I think Xander is unfairly maligned sometimes. Not to say there aren't instances of him being a total **** because there absolutely are but that makes him a little more human to me. He had his issues but seemed to out-grow his worse traits. Xander may have been an author-insert but he is a better guy than Joss Whedon ha.

He's a very strange, under-baked villain compared to the others. It's not even like they failed with him as much as they didn't really do anything in the first place. The conversation Buffy has with Adam (looking human) in her dream in 'Restless' is probably the most interesting moment for me, and that's after his death.

If "The Gift" had been the final episode, then the tombstone (in the final shot) would have made sense. It does not make sense in the season six premier.
