Nah, I wasn't counting Thor with his power-ups. Having the Odinforce and other magical abilities changes the game a lot. I don't know if he would necessarily have been up to the Sentry's level from the Sentry's first mini-series even then, but he'd definitely have been a lot closer.

Well, Thor with the Rune Magic was more powerful than Odin. Surtur sort of indirectly admitted inferiority to Thor as well. I'd love to see him appear again. What happened to him, did he just merge with the universe?

I don't think Thor during "Blood and Thunder" was all that powerful. He was too crazy to really make use of the Power Gem, sort of like how Drax was too stupid to do anything with it except in really rare instances.

Rune Thor destroyed Asgard (which, in turn, eliminates the Odinforce, since it's always said to be tied to Asgard in some way), and then the majority of Thor's spirit enters some kind of limbo while a sliver resurrects itself as Don Blake. That bit convinces the rest to rejoin it and Thor is reborn, but he's reborn as he thinks of himself, which is as the classic Thor (albeit with new clothes). The Rune stuff was something he picked up for that one specific purpose and he doesn't seem to have brought himself back with that knowledge. Or maybe he did but he just doesn't use it, sort of like how he knows how to do surgery as both Thor and Blake but never actually uses it as Thor.

Thor was at his own classic levels in blood and thunder before getting the gem, he did mow down surfer and beta ray bill multiple times.

He did use the power gem. You saw it glow, but I recall him two shotting the Surfer after he weld it. Thor is powerful, but he isn't THAT powerful under his own power. He did brawl evenly with Thanos as well when he had the gem.

It's not so much Thanos as it is Jim Starlin's inability to let him lose to anyone. He's written stories with the sole purpose of retconning away Thanos' losses before. Dan Jurgens wrote probably one of the most epic Thanos stories ever in Thor vol. 2, culminating in Thor, with the help of several mystic artifacts, firmly kicking both Thanos and Mangog's asses... and Jim Starlin came along in a later story and declared that Thanos some shoddy clone that could never measure up to the real thing. He's like a 10-year-old boy taking his ball and going home whenever the other kids try to play with it. It's pathetic.

In his defense, he has his image for this character, he did design him as this way. So I suppose if he feels that someone writes the character in a different manner than his, he needs to correct, since he is the one who created the character, wouldn't you think his decision on Thanos' power level and such would be the standard?

Everyone has low showings, so I get what you mean. But, it's Jim Starlin's portrayal of his character that got me interested in the character anyway.

Marvel is a work-for-hire establishment, so they own Thanos, not him. It's by Marvel's good graces that he's been allowed to come in and 'correct' the wrongs done to his precious baby in the first place, so his view of the character is essentially no more valid than any of Marvel's other writers'. That's the nature of corporate ownership.

Gotcha. I know what you mean. I personally like Starlin's writing. It's not so much Thanos' power, it's his intellect that got me most interested. With that being said, the whole, re continuations are fairly new to me, and there is something about Starlin, when he's interviewed, when he talks. I don't know, he doesn't seem....he seems, off.

Biggest shock of the whole issue was Jane Foster has cancer, which added a layer of emotion to Thor's return home.

Finally got to the LCS to pick this up. GREAT ISSUE! I really loved the whole first half, that showed that Thor interacting in various ways with people from all different walks of life. It shows that he actually has a life off-panel, that he really does love Midgard and Midgardians, and he acts accordingly.

Great character-focused issue all around.

That's fine. Every writer usually has their own idea of who a hero should date. Sometimes it's the classic love interest or sometimes it's somebody completely new, like here. This girl from SHIELD could end up being a great supporting character for all we know.

So I finally got the new issue that came out about a week and a half ago. (I just started a subscription, and this was the first one to come in the mail. I guess I'll get used to the wait....). It was a good set up issue for the upcoming arc.

In the God Butcher arc, Aaron intentionally focused on Thor as a character and didn't include any of Thor's supporting cast or world. It looks like the pendulum is swinging the other way, so to speak, as this issue hints that we'll be going through all the nine realms, and Aaron will explore/introduce some new things into Thor's world. I'm looking forward to see what he brings us!

I am really dissapointed at Marvel's attitude towatds Thor. Maybe they think luck never runs out. After seeing chapter 1 of Shield and falling asleep in the process, I realize they might actaually have been lucky with the Avengers movie and Whedon is most definitely not as good as it seems . So why, then, screw up the one character that has potential to reach a larger audience. Typical people actually like this character. They are making him look like an idiot all the time in the comics. I' ve had it with Marvel.
If you are a Thor fan, let' call for a boycott of the movie. Show some self respect. Lets see how they do without our support. Let them know! Let' s see what Marvel execs think when they hear this. I am on this right now. Show some balls ladies and gentlemen.
