The Dark Knight Caine: "Heath frightened the life out of me"

Not sure if this has been posted anywhere, had a bit of a search and couldnt find anything so thought I'd post it here, if it's already been discussed the moderators can feel free to delete or merge.

Today's issue of the Melbourne Sunday Herald-Sun (Sept 23) carries a brief interview with Michael Caine talking about Heath Ledger's performance in THE DARK KNIGHT, suggesting he could be up for an Oscar nomination for his work.

Here's some of what Caine had to say:

"The worry going in was The Joker.

Jack Nicholson was the greatest Joker so, you know, how do you top that? Well, Heath Ledger's done it and he's extraordinary.

He's gone in a completely different direction to Jack. Jack was like a clown figure, benign but wicked, maybe a killer old uncle. He could be funny and make you laugh.

Heath is like a really scary psychopath. I did one scene with him and he was ready to go and had to come up in a lift and raid our place.

I didn't see him for rehearsal and when he came out of the lift he was so incredible I forgot my lines. He frightened the life out of me.

I'd never met him before. He's a lovely guy and his Joker is going to be a hell of a revelation in this picture."

The only photo accompanying the article is the pic of heath holding the knife up to Maggie G's face.

CAN'T WAIT!!!!

Yes, but not because he knows Bruce is Bats this time. He goes in search of Batman. But I never got why both Joker and Two-Face in BF conclude that Batman's alter ego is a high-society guy. Of course, I don't know what happens in TDK (maybe the Joker gets evidence that Batman is one of the rich Gothamites), but it strikes me as an odd thing. Did I miss something in BF?

Hmm, much as I love Batman, IMO the big flaw with the character (if we're being realist/pedantic ) is that so few people DO twig who he is. I mean how many people IRL are going to have the wherewithall/dosh/means to be Batman? Not many... and then you have to look at which high society people are likely to want to do it... only one who had someone close to him become a victim of a nasty crime... in reality, people would work out quite quickly that Wayne is Batman.

Damn this should put the Nicholson enthusiasts in a tizzy.

Seriously, even though I'm a dedicated fan of Burton's films, I'm breathing a sigh of relief that Ledger's gonna be awesome.

Why?

just for nicholson's sake (for the record i think his joker is meh), for those who say he plays the same character in every movie...that's a choice. he actually is a great actor. watch chinatown. he played that straighter than a mutha f-ckin light post. so with chinatown alone (possibly his best performance) he earned the right to play himself for the rest of his career. =D

Yep, not to mention his 'straight edged' character in Easy Rider.

Jack's a great actor, in my view. Whether he was a great Joker is another matter of course. In my opinion a character like the Joker has to be played by someone not just trying to be themself. Hopefully Heath will do that.

Somebody working on the film is saying how good it's going to be? :wow: Shock horror....

^ Yeah, but even still, you can usually tell when a cast/crew member isn't 100% enthused about a film. *cough*morganfreeman*cough*

Caine sounds genuine enough to me...

they are not allowed to badmouth the film due to their contracts....

To sell the film......if the film bombs, no third film for him, no more money. Also they get paid to promote the film more, nothing new there.

then why go out of your way to talk about his performance and not other aspects of the film? There must be something special with his performance is he blogs about it rather then talking to papers that are dying to know about the new joker

i dont think Michael Caine is too worried about promoting the film...theres plenty of other people to do that, and yes im sure he likes money, but not to a point where he praises one's performance...him saying Heath scared the life out of him proves 3 things... heath has gotten lost in this new Joker, gone crazy, and is going to give the performance of HIS life.

Dude this is Batman, not some small independent film that no one knows about TDK will be a huge selling movie with or without some of the actors talking about Heath's preformance so early on, even Gary Oldman praised his acting.

Caine seems pretty genuine here.

exactly. i want to believe him to, but i would rather just see it for myself instead of takeing someone elses word for it, especially someone who is getting paid to say stuff. he lost me at "hes beat nicholson", LOL. mhmm, alright, i think i'll just wait to see it for myself old man.:cwink:

exactly hes just stating his opinion-all the fake promo is a long ways off yet

I'm not sure if it's fake. I hear that kind of comments from cast mates all the time about every movie. Caine might be telling a good story to promote the film. Or might be telling a true experience. Or a mix of both, which I think is more probable.

The thing is...

I need to watch the movie to know how good it is. *shrughs*

Caine is a respected guy,he is a well known and looked up to actor.I dont think hes the type to kiss someones ass without due cause...

...he never said Stephen Segal was great just to promote "on deadly ground"...

Is anybody surprised?

No? Yeah, me neither.

I think is quite possible you're right about Caine. Yet I have to watch the movie first since his respectable opinion might differ from mine.

Nobody would say such a thing about Seagal. :yay:

really, at his stage of his career, Caine doesn't have to do any promoting...
