Captain Marvel General Discussion and Speculation - Part 1

Should Carol have a Boston accent in the movies? I think so. She's from Boston, so it only makes sense.

I don't think she needs a Boston accent as I feel those rarely turn out well in movies. I wouldn't be opposed to a subtle one, though. But it would be nice if they made her a Red Sox fan at least.

I thought I had already replied, turned out it happened in the wrong thread. My response:

Chris Claremont is always big on exaggerated writing to indicate accents. In neither Ms. Marvel nor X-Men did Carol Danvers actually have a Boston accent (although that might have caused confusion when Rogue when from southern accent to Carol's voice since they might have looked similar in print). I will say this: My dad's from Boston and didn't have an accent (although his father certainly did). Maybe they don't worry about it for her, but, if they cast her parents, they make sure they have one.

It's not a deal breaker to me but if the actress they hire can pull it off then hey that's cool.

I can do without the accent, but I do hope they play up the fact that she is from Boston as it would make her different from the legion of heroes from New York.

I'm curious to see how they innovate with her powers. She can shoot beams from her hands, is bullet proof, super strong and flies. She's basically like a female Iron Man. Minus the armor, so they'll have to really come up with some original choreography.

I think emphasizing the energy absorption factor of her abilities would be a good start on that front. There are all sorts of creative things that could be done with that, imo.

In X-Men: DOFP, Bishop had energy absorption:

It could look something like that, but she doesn't channel her power into a gun and yellow is more her color. She shoots energy blasts straight from her hands, which is unheard of in the MCU. Combine all her powers together and you're going to have a CGI spectacle, one of Marvel's most powerful heroes. She's more of a Thor than an Iron Man, especially with her blond hair and when she goes binary. Now, that will be insane to see that on screen. She could pretty much nuke a whole planet with that much power.

I can't wait to see Carol absolutely wrecking **** in her movie and in Infinity War, knocking villains back like nine pins, launching them in the air. Oh, and with energy absorption, I think it would be cool to see her getting knocked back through a wall, seemingly hurting her, but she absorbed the blast more powerful than before.

 ITA Mike. When I see Captain Marvel as one of a lot of people's least-anticipated of Phase 3 and others suggesting it won't do much better than Ant-Man, I really don't think they've put much thought into how epic this character and her powers can look onscreen.

With respect to Ant-Man, because I loved the movie, Paul Rudd was great and Luis stole the show; Ant-Man has to have one of the dumbest powersets in the MCU. A guy wears a magical suit that allows him to shrink and talk to ants!

So, when people say that Captain Marvel won't do that much better than Ant-Man, they just don't get it. Sure, the Captain Marvel movie is still an unknown. We don't know how good it will do at the box-office, but I would be surprised if it doesn't outgross Ant-Man by a healthy 200 million.

Too bad we still have to wait another 3 years for the naysayers to be proved wrong.

I'm sad we have to wait that long. I finally got around to reading the comics and I am so stoked for this movie it's not even funny.

I kinda wanna see her remind Cap that she outranks. I would find that really amusing.

I think Captain Marvel sounds more marketable than Ant-Man, she even has a better Superhero name. Ant-Man did as well as can be expected and could hit 500mil worldwide with China but I think that Captain Marvel has a good chance of doing better.

I'll be very, VERY surprised if Captain Marvel doesn't do better just from her more appealing name and power-set alone. If they get some exciting people in the cast and behind the camera, her stock will only go up from there.

Look at the writers they got and look at the Doctor Strange cast, I have no doubt that Marvel will put together a very impressive cast and crew.

Yeah, Doctor Strange has, imo, the best cast yet for a Marvel film. And I already love the writers we have for Cap Marvel. Can't wait to see the rest of the team get assembled for this.

Yeah, the concept/power set was a major hangup for a lot of people with Ant-Man. It just seems silly. Captain Marvel is a flying brick with energy powers who goes into outer space. That's an easier sell.

So this movie is pretty much guaranteed to not be billed as Marvel's Captain Marvel, yes?

As weird as that will sound, it probably still will be. Particularly when there are still some DC fans who think of SHAZAM as Captain Marvel.

I think it will still get that Marvel logo above its name in some of its licensing, but I don't think any voice-over guys will be calling it that, nor do I think it will be listed as that officially. I've noticed on the TV cable guides that they've removed "Marvel's" from the front of The Avengers now whenever it airs, which they weren't doing a year ago, so they seem less concerned with differentiating from those other Avengers now and with that branding in general. And I personally don't think they care if some out-of-touch DC fans get this mixed up with Shazam, lol. They have the only Captain Marvel rights in town now, and have for years.

I've never met anyone who actually pronounced the "Marvel's" part of the title in any Marvel movie. Even the theaters don't actually bill it as "Marvel's". I don't even get why they bother with that branding.

Well I don't think they did it before The Avengers, and at the time I thought they did it because there's already another well-known property called The Avengers. But then they kept doing it, lol.

I really only remember them going out of their way to do it with The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy.

EDIT: And the tv shows.

They did it a lot with Ant-Man, too.
