Captain Marvel General Discussion and Speculation - Part 1

For anyone not watching AoS, we just got a version of "Mar-Vell Lite" in Vin-Tak. OK, not quite, but it sure felt like it.

He was an underover blue Kree, with a disguising technology that made his skin look pink. He even needed Nitrogen gas to continue powering it (in the original, Mar-Vell needed Nitrogen gas to help him breathe in Earth's atmosphere). He was searching in a cave for the Kree Diviners (aka Terrigen Crystals), which felt a bit like the cave where the Psyche-Magnitron was hidden. He talked a bunch about nobility, and turned out not to be such a bad guy, except for the part where he wanted to eliminate Skye. Sif returned him to his home world of Hala.

I'd suspected as much before, but now I'm pretty well convinced that there are no "Pink Kree" in the MCU.
Agreed. I think they handled quite a bit of mythology building for both Captain Marvel and Inhumans. And handled it extremely very well IMO. Yup, the pink Kree thing always felt a little off in the comics. I think they're not going down that route in the MCU.

Also, if you're a fan of the MCU movies that dropped off the show, it's absolutely time to jump back on to the AOS train. To say that it has improved drastically would be an understatement. The show has gotten so assured with its mythology building that it's really a shame that there are MCU fans out there that are missing out.

yeah the story the kree mentioned reminded me of the 2000 mini by Pacheco. In that story the kree came back to earth to use the inhumans as weapons in space. I love that we are getting so much kree now. Can't wait to see Hala and the Supreme Intelligence.

There's at least one black one. So they're not all blue.

Oh wow, I wasn't familiar with him from the comics and didn't realize Korath was supposed to be Kree. I thought he was just working for Ronan.

I've thought about the casting for Mar-Vell and I can't think of anyone better for it than Aaron Eckhart honestly.

Oh yeah, I had no idea Korath was Kree

interesting
Kree -blue skin, with some black members
Dark elves- white skin, with some black members
Asgardians- pinkish(white people) skin, with some black members

that pigmentation gets around, lol

and I'd agree to Echkart as Mar-vell, dude needs a rebound after I, Frankenstein

This. It's crazy how that show went from 0 to 10.

It's never spelled out in the film if he's Kree. Oddly enough, the prequel comic they did about Nebula seemed to suggest that he was one of her "siblings", meaning that in the MCU continuity he could just be a survivor of another race Thanos murdered like Gamora was.

With Mar-Vell I wouldn't mind if they just sidestepped the whole pink issue and made him look like his Ultimate counterpart.

I'm not very well versed with the Ultimate comics, but yea, I think we can safely assume they'll drop the "pink Kree" stuff and just stick to the AOS Kree disguise playbook. Basically, Nitrogen powered technologabob that turns Kree skin pink/white enough to pass of as Caucasian. AOS did it perfectly, IMO. Mar-Vell just needs to follow the same broad strokes. In fact, the more I think about it, I feel Mar-Vell could already be here on Earth, spying for the Kree, starting to admire human culture and rising in the military intelligence ranks as we speak.

Agreed on Korath. I too don't think that Korath is Kree in the MCU continuity.

Frankly, I thought he was supposed to be Sakaaran because he looked more like them than the actual Sakaarans (who, to be fair, were supposed to be Badoon).

James Gunn says movie Korath is Kree on the audio commentary of the film.

Based on what?
This is a movie that did not shy away from being comics accurate.
Was Groot a generic alien that looked like a tree but wasn't really plant-like?
No
Did he have more dialogue than "I/We am/are Groot"?
No
Sure, some things were changed, but the core of the characters remained.
Korath even had the 'augmented by technology' part, which is comics-cannon. He had the strength of a Kree...

There's nothing at the moment to indicate he wasn't Kree.

As I said, the prequel they put out shows Korath growing up alongside Gamora and Nebula as one of Thanos' "children".

latest

The children he takes after eradicating their worlds. The Kree are still very much alive in the film (and it wouldn't make much sense for Ronan to side with Thanos if he was running around slaughtering his people).

Yeah that whole thing with the pink Kree was always rather dumb to me.

Did the comic say he only "adopts" those whose race he's annihilated?
Because in the movie we only know that to be the case for Gamora, they didn't even say that was also the case for Nebula.

Plus, the prequel comics and novels aren't 100% cannon anyways. (remember the X2 novel by Claremont?)

Then, there's also this:
James Gunn says movie Korath is Kree on the audio commentary of the film.

Thanos experimented on Korath and changed his pigmentation to prevent him from being sunburnt while on different intergalactic missions :o

Korath is a black Kree man. End of discussion.

If they are doing away with the pink(white) Kree, wouldn't that make Carol half-blue?

I was not aware that had been confirmed. Thanks for mentioning it.

Not necessarily. Hybrid genetics allows you to keep some genes from one side (such as skin color) and some from another (such as strength). In fact, there's even at least one set of twins (not identical) that have completely differing (black/white) skin colors.

Are you talking about genotype vs phenotypes? All traits are passed on, but not all are visually apparent? I think that's genotype, not phenotype. Anyways, I hope they not only focus on her powers, but how having a half alien biology would affect her. Maybe Marvel could consult alien xenobiologists. Or maybe I'm thinking too much about this. In real life, there probably would be all sorts of issues, but in comics, alien DNA makes you awesome.

I found a new Captain Marvel video. 7 things that need to happen in a Captain Marvel movie:

I agree with much of what has been said, but it's pronounced "core", not "corps." :whatever:

I like the idea of Carol being the bridge between the Marvel cosmic and Marvel Earth who will assemble all the heroes in one final epic battle against Thanos. She didn't do a very good job in introducing Carol's rogues gallery. Useless Klaw? Is that his name? I think Carol fought him once, and beat him pretty easily. Also, I only want to see Carol use ninja skills against the toughest opponents. She should have no problem knocking down most bad guys with brute strength and powerful energy blasts. I want to see Carol lift up a tank, fly away, and beat up a bad guy with it.

While I tend to agree, am I the only one who likes Brian Reed's Ms. Marvel? Granted, I like Kelly DeConnick's probably better, but I still thought it was quite good.

I liked it as well, and I did think she was being dismissive of everything that came before Captain Marvel. Brian Reed did a lot to thrust Carol Danvers to the forefront of Marvel Comics. She did become the leader of the amity Avengers during that time, after all.
