Captain Marvel General Discussion and Speculation - Part 1

Why would they take time out of SOMEONE ELSE'S movie to give Carol super powers when they can just do it in her own movie?

Did it not occur to anyone that maybe that is one of the main purposes of the Captain Marvel movie? To establish her character fully, including her superhero origin and her ties to the Kree? Use her own movie to get that stuff established properly and not shoehorn a rushed truncated version of it in someone else's movie?

Does that not make sense?
Obviously that has occurred to people since thats the most obvious scenario.

Honestly, I'm not sure why anyone would want her in Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

Carol is teamed up with the Guardians in the comics. Maybe she's stuck in space after getting her powers and hitches a ride back to Earth from the Guardians.

Oh in theory I understand the appeal. I'm talking about while James Gunn is at the helm.

No matter what, it strikes me that she'd do better in Guardians 3 than Guardians 2.

She's a very very recent recruit. And honestly with such a limited number of heroes I'd rather they focus on another woman character, especially when Carol is getting her own movie and likely will be joining the Avengers.

Agreed. I'd love to see pre-powers Air Force Carol in some movie before her solo film (as I've mentioned before, Civil War seems like the most obvious fit to me), and I have no problem with Carol joining the Guardians at some point, but that shouldn't happen until sometime after she and her powers have been well-established, imo, which means NOT in GotG2.

Agreed... except that I think A:AOU might be a better fit for a pre-powers Carol to cameo (even anonymously, if required) than Civil War. I think the Air Force would factor into the latter, while I could absolutely see the Air Force "scramble the jets" against Ultron.

Also, going into slight tinfoil mode here but I think it's possible that an anonymous cameo might be the reason for confusing/conflicting reports on whether or not she'll appear in A:AOU, with L-R saying she'll appear and Nerdist saying she won't.

I was thinking of something like a post credit scene or something. Of female characters in Guardians, I'd like to see Phyla-Vell. Daughter of Mar-Vell, she could be that "Kree girl" who tried to rip out Peter Quill's thorax.

Well, the rumors have been going for months that they're just not sure what they want to do. Frankly, I was surprised Latino Review and Nerdist got any coverage for this since, to me, both versions were old news.

The idea is it'll be a post-credits scene. A couple months ago, it hadn't been filmed but wasn't too late to film. I'm not sure that's still the case. I think the idea was to basically have her anonymously. More importantly, there was the possibility the actress would be out of focus/her face not visible. That was one way to avoid having to cast the character just yet.

Hi folks!!!

I am a newly coverted fan of Carol danvers, just finish the first 3 tpb written by kelly SD..love them and love how badass Carol danvers is written.
I have never read about her stuff previously but I am a firm fan now

From what is depicts in the comics. She should be the most powerful avenger once she is introduced in the MCU.

Longtime fan..Pls correct me if I am wrong. i think she should be able to go toe to toe with thor and hulk right?

She will be one of the most powerful. She's a superman level character. We won't really know the extent of her abilities in the MCU though until her movie.

I do hope mcu showcase her energy absorbing and reprojection ability. It will be quite a sight

On pure physical strength, Hulk and Thor have her beat. She's much stronger than, say, Captain America, but not quite up to the strength level of Thor (at least Thor from the comics, as his power level has been notably decreased in the MCU)...HOWEVER, when you take into account other abilities, I would say yes, she should be able to go toe-to-toe with them.

That said, when Kevin Feige announced the Cap Marvel movie, he described her as "One of, if not THE, most powerful hero in our universe." So it's very possible that her strength could be matching Thor's in the MCU. But the thing that makes her most formidable is that energy absorption. Not only can she re-project it at ridiculously powerful levels, but it can also make her physically stronger as well. So if they maintain both of those attributes in the MCU, I can see how she could easily come across as the most powerful.

Thank you for the very detailed explanation :) much appreciated, especially for a new fan like me.

No problem! And welcome to the fandom. Always happy to see new Carol converts, especially from KSD's run since that's my fave and what made me a fan myself. :D

Kevin Feige confirms Carol was cut in earlier versions of the script:

Sadness. :csad:

Oh well. He said some interesting things about Infinity War. It's going to be more like two separate, distinct movies, as opposed to one big movie with a cliffhanger between them. It's nice to know he wants to do Carol's origin story Justice, however and whenever it may be introduced.

I'm glad he said that now so we won't be disappointed when we don't see her in AoU.

I hope this change in her introduction is for the best.

Does this lead even more credence to the idea that the Captain Marvel movie is gonna be an origin story?

The Captain Marvel movie is so far off, that when it comes, it will feel as if I've been waiting my entire life for this moment.

I'm glad marvel didn't just jam her in, not just for carol's sake and the actress who will play her but also for the other characters in avengers age of Ultron. It makes me just a little bit more confident that each character will get at least a decent amount of screen time.

Part of me is disappointed but at the same time part of me is not disappointed. It's a shame we won't see her, but then again if there was just too much going on to do her right then it's probably for the best.

Possibly. The comments are certainly leaning towards wanting to introduce her without powers and show an origin. On the other hand, since Spider-Man changed the movie order, they could always put her origin in Avengers IW1.

Kf said this

“We didn’t want to introduce her fully formed flying in a costume before you knew who she was or how she came to be.”

So it definitely is an origin movie to a certain extent. .or they may use extensive flashbacks
