Captain Marvel Captain Marvel General Discussion and Speculation - Part 2

Does anyone else get pissed when people still call Carol "Ms. Marvel?" My blood starts to boil.
I mean I understand part of it is probably habit just because that's what they knew her as for so many years, but I'd be lying if I said it didn't bug me a little. Especially with those who consciously refuse to accept her current title. But then I just take comfort in knowing that after 2019, she will practically be a household name and "Captain Marvel" will be her definitive title in the eyes of audiences everywhere. :D

Still no news, huh? I'm kinda both anticipating and dreading the moment the shortlist of actresses comes out, because someone is bound to be disappointed; I just hope it won't be me, lol.

As far as I'm concerned, Winnick is basically the perfect live-action Carol, at least look-wise. Haven't seen enough of her acting to actively wish she landed the role though. I mean, not that me wishing for it would amount to anything, but still. :o

I find Ms Marvel rolls off the tongue more easily than Captain Marvel, partly because of the alliteration, and maybe because of the decades of history of her having that name. Plus I still associate the name "Captain Marvel" with Mar-Vell.

In Star Trek, was it disrespectful for people to keep referring to Spock as Mr Spock? In the 60s TV series he held the rank of Lt Commander to begin with, and then later Commander. In the movies he was Captain Spock.

Everyone still called him Mr Spock though, both in-universe and real-life audiences alike.

For Carol, the name "Captain Marvel" is either just a name and not a rank, or else she holds two different ranks: Either Major or Colonel in the US Air Force, and Captain in the Kree Army.

But if she doesn't hold any Kree rank, then it's really just a name, which I suspect it would be. That's what Captain America's was in the comics. Wasn't he just a lowly private or something? But in the movies they actually gave him the rank of Captain in the US Army, so that he was also Captain Steve Rogers.

Isn't "captain" really Mar-Vell's rank?

They're not really going to call Carol "Major Marvel" or "Colonel Marvel", so ultimately it won't really be as big a deal whether they sometimes refer to her as Captain Marvel or Ms Marvel, unless she does somehow attain a captain's rank.

why would you be pissed?

I think it's disrespectful because that isn't character's name now.

LOL...ya'll are acting like she's a real person

Pretty much this. If you've been calling someone something for 30+ years, its not necessarily to just forget that and let it go. X-23 is still X-23 to me; I dont refer to her as Wolverine. Its just what Im used to especially when fickle Marvel will likely change that when the original returns. Likely not going to happen with Carol she was with the Ms. Marvel codename for far longer so thats more ingrained in people's minds

It annoys me because some people do it out of spite. They think she doesn't deserve to be Captain Marvel because they want someone else to be Captain Marvel. The name change also happened 4 years ago. That's not a recent change.

Carol was not Ms Marvel for 30+ years. That's just not true. She was Ms Marvel for about 4 years before losing her powers, then she became binary, then she rejoined the Avengers as Warbird, and then back to Ms Marvel, and now Captain Marvel.

I didn't say she was only called that for 30 years but people did know her as that for that long. My first exposure to her was from the 90s
Xmen cartoon and even without reading her stories, she was Ms. Marvel to me. Binary and Warbird were just alternate code names. Ms Marvel is what she's always been most identified with and its what's been used in cartoons and video games prior to her recent Captain status. That name won't be mainstream till the movie comes out so get used to people still referring to her as Ms. Marvel

No I'm not acting like a fictional character is a real person and it's outrageously insulting for anyone to say that I am. That is the equivalent of calling me psychotic and I'm not going to just take that. Disagree with my opinion if you want but don't ****ing insult me.

If it's only *some* people who do it deliberately out of spite, then it's not worth throwing a fit over. Personally, I find it a bit annoying when characters change monikers. I mean, it's cool to see characters take up a different mantle, but it's not always easy to adjust to the change. On top of that, not everyone is up to date with the comics. Not everyone reads them at the moment of release. Maybe Carol is Ms. Marvel to people because that's where they are in the comics at this point. And maybe for them it's a spoiler. So maybe you're being ignorant of those who can't help it that Carol is Ms. Marvel to them.

sorry if you feel that way. That wasnt the intention

The name of the film and hero is Captain Marvel. Unless the name has changed calling it Ms. Marvel makes no sense.

I just don't get it. Carol was Ms Marvel to me, and I felt the name change was stupid. I had no idea about the Captain Marvel mantle. I just felt it was stupid because she was at least a major, so calling her a captain would be demoting her in a sense. But I got used to it and started calling her Captain Marvel. Now, Marvel announced her movie and the internet is cluttered with tons of posts about Captain Marvel fancastings, rumors, updates from Marvel Studios about the character, and so on. Yet, people still have trouble acknowledging her name? I just don't get that.

No one is calling her Ms. Marvel in this thread

are you complaining about other sites bc I havent been reading people referring to her as Ms. Marvel in here. You might want to bring that to the attention of whomever you are referring to bc it really hasnt been an issue here

How about you take a step back so you can realize this isn't worth throwing a fit over?

It doesn't particularly bother me. The movie will be here soon enough and then most people will know her as "Captain", ending the debate.

You just know there's gunna be a "Ms Marvel...." "That's Captain Marvel, soldier" moment in the film

Or the obligatory joke where she's trying to decide on a code name and someone suggests it.

Like the scene in Jessica Jones where her friend suggests she call herself Jewel and Jessica says it sounds like a stripper name.

"Ms. Captain Marvel...

No. Just Captain Marvel." :oldrazz:

I'd like to see some concept art eventually. I wanna know what they're planning.

So, there's this rumor, which I do not believe that Jennifer Lawrence is in talks to play Captain Marvel. If there is a god, and he is merciful, he will not let this happen.

http://www.comicplanetcultureforlife.com/2016/04/25/hot-rumor-jennifer-lawrence-early-talks-marvel-studios-captain-marvel-role/

“Final “X-Men: Apocalypse” trailer. I told you Wolverine would be in it. Jennifer Lawrence’s last turn as Mystique as she will be Captain Marvel. Say what now? *Giggles and runs*”

I'd like to see some concept art eventually. I wanna know what they're planning.

You and everyone else.

It's nonsense, it's not going to happen. For one thing, Jennifer Lawrence doesn't want to be in blockbuster films anymore (she didn't want to be in that one). Second, she'll be too recognizable, which will take people out of the movie.

I'd hate it if Jennifer Lawrence were Carol. She already is boring me everywhere else. Let someone else have a chance to be a female action star. I remember when people were wanting her for Wonder Woman too. That would've been terrible and she would've just looked like Jennifer Lawrence in a WW costume. Here she'll look like Jennifer Lawrence in a Captain Marvel costume.

You could say that about most of the people we want for the role. But I suppose the big difference here is that JLaw already has two big franchises she's involved with or has been and I think we want to give someone else a shot at a sustainable franchise.
