Captain Marvel Captain Marvel General Discussion and Speculation - Part 9

I felt the cinematography was fine in cm but some of the action scenes were lit too dark hope they fix that in the home release, I ...might be ignorant but seems like an easy fix.

I have an astigmatism and yet I have rarely if ever agreed with the "it's too dark" criticism of so many films of the last 25 years. I think more people should try to check out films at better theaters sometimes. I thought the action sequences were all clear and easy to follow. The opening sequence was indeed "dark" but I totally could tell what was going on. Same with all action scenes "indoors".

It is very often the result of suburban multiplexes not removing the polarization filter used to project 3d movies while they are playing 2d films.

In other news, I don't know if this has been shared but this is a really neat little round table discussion of department heads for makeup, hair, costumes and VFX on the film. They should put a longer version of this on the bluray for sure.

This I buy. So many theaters seem to operate with like a skeleton crew most of the day. I can see a lazy team or manager just forgetting a detail like that for sure.

I saw it in 2 different theaters. I also have astigmatism. But it is what it is. I still felt that way the second time.

First time saw it in an AMC dolby digital only one in my area I know of and then I saw it in my nearest lieMax

Only thing I can do is make a trip to the closest true IMAX. I still loved the movie though.

The liemax is indeed a disaster of a theater I could see them messing something up I've had 3 times in that theater where on opening night of a new movie ... they played the wrong movie and you see a mob rush out to tell management lol...

I can always tell when the disaster is about to go down when the trailer for the movie we are there to see gets played before the movie lol

No offense to Samuel L. Jackson but this should have been Carol and Maria’s movie through and through.

(I liked the movie, just btw.)

I think I agree: if I had one critique of the film, it would be that the amazing Lashana Lynch didn’t get enough screen time for someone who was so clearly such an important person in the story, Carol’s only connection to earth, and the mother of a future superhero. I mean, she was still able to do wonders with what screen time she got, but I would have liked more: more flashbacks to her, maybe.

It's a valid point. I had a similar thought when I first saw the movie, though Maria's scenes really landed for me the second time, so it felt a little more balanced. Those scenes are some of the best in the movie.

I could see Maria moving into the foreground more in the sequel, with Fury going into a smaller supporting role. The buddy aspect was good, but very light, there was a stronger emotional connection between Carol and Maria. It feels like something that could be developed more.

I was really worried the story would be too similar to green lantern’s but I’m really impressed with how much more different and better it is
Originally, it was closer to GL.
But, they took care of that.

I cried twice during this film.
The first time was for Stan Lee.
The second time was when Maria just plain got me with all the feels.

I think that Monica and Maria got the time they deserved and were fine for what the story asked for. If anything Lynch imbued the character with more weight than the role on paper had.

No... The character that was terribly underserved by the finished product was Bening as Lawson/Marv-Ell. And... It's kinda inexcusable in terms of how well just about everything else was handled in the movie. Lawson was supposedly so inspirational to Carol that she is the person the Supreme Intelligence appears to her as in telepathic communication. Maria intimates how much Lawson meant to Carol, and we have to assume this is so given that Carol trusts Lawson enough to take an off the books mission for her (though... That needed some explanation... Why would Marv-Ell NOT know how to fly the craft she had created? Why would she NEED Carol to do anything?) but... We don't see much of what the relationship is. We are TOLD about it but we don't get an experience of what Lawson meant to Carol in any depth whatsoever. It's a rather big misstep in an otherwise good CBM.

That scene...man, when Maria came on and was all emotional and all - that got me.

What I don't understand is the "she has no arc" complaints. Carol Danvers probably goes through the most drastic change that any of the MCU heroes did in their origin stories
Thank you!

I enjoyed SLJ/Fury, but you are right.

Question for comic book readers. Is Carol's thing in the comics all about protecting weak and defenseless civilizations? I'm just trying to guess where tptb could take carol next. Making captain Marvel's franchise centre on Carol helping weaker species will be exciting and unique with the potential to expand the universe.

I don't feel like the movies are too dark, I think this argument has come from older people and elders who don't like watching action movies

I'm old but I'm not that old. I think the dark costumes mixed with the dark lighting just made everything look flat.

I did a quick search on Captain Marvel in Youtube and it's astounding how many so-called geek channels mount a concerted effort to spread lies about CM and how it's the worst movie ever. It's quite pathetic.

Yea, I agree. That is the first though I had... Why is it so dark when they already have dark uniforms? Made it hard for me to enjoy the fights. The battle scenes in the dark were a tad too dark imo and I had a hard time making sense of some sequences in the ship with her in the green suit. I thought maybe they did that purposely to hide some of the choreography because tbh some of her fight scenes and sparing with Jude was very bland and did not come across as believable. Not sure if I'm the only one who felt that.
