Cate Blanchett is the Mysterious & Powerful Villainess HELA! - Part 1

Looking forward to seeing Care as Hela. Hopefully she knocks it out of the park! (I'm sure she will)

"Women like looking sexy, but it doesn’t mean we want to **** you."

^^ This is precisely why Cate is a big damn lady hero for me. She made a speech last night at the InStyle Awards about how women should have the right to dress sexy without that being taken as an open invitation. Damn straight.

Also, dear lord she's so awesome and terrifying as Hela. She absolutely did the character justice, I'm a very happy Hela fan right now. :ilv:

Good for her. I think of dressing up as a form of real-life cosplay.

Gotta say....Hela is wasted in this movie. The exact same way Malekith was wasted in the previous one. She's not even really the same character as in the comic. She's not trying to lure Thor and co to the underworld. She's just a generic villain who is good at fighting.

And Cate, wonderful actress, just camps it up like Poison Ivy.

Utter, utter waste.

It's like you didn't keep up with the film before the release date at all.

like poison ivy?? I refuse to believe that is the case

Care was great. Just needed more of her. We better see her again soon!

I'm sorry, I respect your opinion but just, no. Hela definitely needed more screen time, I've been perfectly forthcoming about that in my review, but to say that she's 'wasted' is a massive overstatement and simply not accurate. I'm a massive comic Hela fan (ask anyone, I don't exactly keep it a secret) and you better believe that if I genuinely thought that they'd 'Malakith-ed' her, I'd be screaming about it, there'd be no way I'd be able to enjoy a movie that wasted her that totally. Malekith had absolutely no personality to speak of and was a generic doomsday villain that had incredibly flimsy motivations. Hela on the other hand bursts with personality, you can tell that from the minute she first saunters on screen. She has genuine, and dare I even say it, even slightly understandable motivations too. Could they, and her past, have been a little more fleshed out? Definitely. But to say she's a 'generic villain' is so wildly off the mark that I have to wonder if you fell asleep during large portions of the movie or something.

Lol, of course she's 'campy'. My goodness, have you ever picked up a Thor comic, like, ever? Comics Hela is insanely campy and vampy, that's why she's such a fun villain. She's bombastic, vain, and she's constantly boasting about how awesome she is, giving corny villain speeches and trying to take over Asgard and the Nine Realms. She loathes Odin too. All pretty damn accurate I'd say. Cate playing her completely straight as a dour and restrained villain would be completely missing the point of the character, that's exactly what they did with Malekith and was one of the reasons he was so utterly forgettable.

I love my campy, vampy villain queen. Cate has done me proud. :woot:

Yeah I love a good campy villain, and Cate is usually good at it. Can't wait to see her in the role, even if her screentime is not so "great".

Hela is my favourite MCU villain even with the limited screentime she had. Given that the other really good MCU villain is Loki, the Thor franchise is certainly stronger than average in that department. Now just to excise the memory of the totally wasted Malekith. :csad:

It's funny- I'm still not sure I get Malekith's motivation...nothing could be worse than that.

I don't think I care any more lol. Hela's purpose is clear.

Personally I don't think Malekith was very unclear, and I liked what was there and just wanted more to flesh him out, but I'm certainly looking forward to seeing Hela whom I expect to blow him out of the water, even if she also doesn't have a huge amount of screen time.

I thought Hela was fairly generic, and they did little to nothing with the altered backstory they gave her, but it was salvaged by Cate Blanchett's performance. She's very charming.

Cate's Hela was just OOZING personality and charisma. [blackout]The part where she's slouching like a villain over Odin's throne and made Skurge her executioner just makes one want to sign up to be her minion.[/blackout] I loved that despite her backstory, not once did she became weepy or sentimental. Just flat out owned her badness. She reminded of what would happen if Galadriel got turned into a Buffy vampire.

Cate Blanchett is amazing. Never fails to disappoint! She really nails the role of Hela.:ilv::ilv: I hope that we could see Hela in IW or Avengers 4 (I'm kinda hopeful she'll be in it because they can't just leave her like that - I mean it would be such a let down if that's how it ends for her in the film).

On other note there's a shot in the film that I'm looking forward too but didn't make it :(:(:(

Yeah I feel like character-wise, she's sort of "meh. Her motives are rather generic and the new backstory for her feels, undercooked. They really don't do that much interesting stuff with it imo.

However, Cate is amazing and a joy to watch every second that she's onscreen. The issue is, she's not onscreen enough and I feel like they could have given her more to do when she was onscreen at times. I was hoping that I wouldn't have to say that about yet another Marvel villain, but alas it's true.

So overall, I'd say that Hela is an entertaining villain, but she just misses out on being in the top tier of CBM villain for the reasons that I mentioned.

That being said, I reserve the right to change my mind later on IF they bring her back in future movies (finger's crossed that they will).

On other note there's a shot in the film that I'm looking forward too but didn't make it :(:(:(

What shot was that, helamazing? I remember in particular the shot of Hela [BLACKOUT]spinning around and shooting weapons out in every direction[/BLACKOUT] wasn't actually in the film which I found disappointing.

That's a very fair assessment, Loki882. Hela is still top of the pile villain-wise for me, but that's because I have zero objectivity and it's Hela played by Cate Blanchett so she was always going to come out on top for me. :cwink:

If Marvel Studios don't get Hela into another MCU movie, that would be a huge mistake on their part IMO. There's a very good chance though (I hope) seeing as how [BLACKOUT]the end and Hela's fate was left incredibly ambiguous[/BLACKOUT] and Cate has openly said that she'd love to return. She said that Ragnarok was the most fun she's ever had on a film set and she was gently ribbing Kevin Feige at the Ragnarok press conference about appearing in another movie.

So I've been browsing through the Cate Blanchett hashtag on twitter and I'm pleased to see that people who have seen the film are actually really enthusiastic about Hela. The most negative thing I've seen being said is that she should have had more screentime, which is completely accurate. Huge amounts of tweets are all about how damn hot she is, which while true, can get a little repetitive after a while. :cwink: So here are some reactions, and I haven't even gone back that far:

but I can't express enough my love for Hela. Cate Blanchett is perfect. I'm submissive to you, my Queen.
also cate blanchett could punch me in the face and i'd still be in love with her WHAT A VILLAIN truly she is astounding

Hela is so lovable and sassy that instead of hating her she made my day even if she's the main villain. Cate Blanchett is the best.
And I wanted 98% of #ThorRagnarok to be focused on Cate Blanchett because she easily stole the whole thing!
Cate Blanchett is the best villain. #ThorRagnarok
Ragnarok was great. Cate Blanchett kicked butt, and I think I've got a Thor-crush now. #ThorRagnarok

#ThorRagnarok delivered! Awesome dialogue, visual effects, and soundtrack throughout and Cate Blanchett as Hela was divine!!
See? Even without enough screentime, Cate managed to provoke that kind of reaction.

GET HER IN ANOTHER MOVIE, MARVEL.

Wowww the shot of
Hela making that "weapon tornado" is not in the film?

Lameeeeee

There's a few shots from the trailers that aren't in the final film...it's actually weirdly interesting to think about, because some of them looked CGI-heavy

Trailers do that a lot these days. It's kind of annoying, but I'm used to it by now.

There is actually, watching the trailers make it more apparent now. The shot of Hela [BLACKOUT]turning to the side and kinda playing with her nails[/BLACKOUT] that was so epic in the teaser trailer isn't in the movie either. Neither is the [BLACKOUT]orange aura kind of thing that surrounds her when she powers up that was in the trailers (and caused a few to believe that she was using the power of the soul stone)[/BLACKOUT]. Weird.

Some more twitter reactions that I've been gathering, these make me so happy. :woot:

Completely blown away by #Thorragnarok Cate Blanchett STOLE the movie!! She was amazing!!!
Cate Blanchett & @TessaThompson_x are the best thing that ever happened to a Thor movie

#ThorRagnarok was fast, fun and action packed. Cate Blanchett was superb as Hela. Easily my favourite Thor so far. Definitely the funniest.
Thor: Ragnarok was great fun! I loved Hela even if I kept thinking of her as like, sexy Aku from Samurai Jack
As expected, Cate Blanchett nailed the villain role Hela in #ThorRagnarok. The movie is awesome and 100x better than the 1st 2 Thor films.
Jeff Goldblum and Cate Blanchett are everything in Thor: Ragnarok. Let's get a Hela/Grandmaster Defiant Ones riff in Marvel Phase 4, pls.
Thor Ragnarok is sooo good! Cate Blanchett is one hell of a b**ch! Haha She’s like a bad ass Maleficent! Oh and she rocks that black hair. Must watch!
Thor: Ragnarok was just amazing!! He looks damn hot with the new haircut and Cate Blanchett killed it in every scene! Killed it!
