Cate Blanchett is the Mysterious & Powerful Villainess HELA! - Part 1

Yes those shots... one of the shots i'm most looking forward is that [BLACKOUT]one with orange aura.[/BLACKOUT]

You know, I'm wondering if [BLACKOUT]that effect was put in the trailers as a bit of a misdirect, it lead a lot of people to think she was using the power of the soul stone, maybe that was the point.[/BLACKOUT] Who knows. *shrug*

I'm sorry everyone, I hate to lower the tone but for those that have seen the film, I was just thinking about that scene where Hela is kinda... draped over the throne with her hair loose and talking to Skurge and dear lord... :hmr: Cate looked so ridiculously hot in that scene.

[BLACKOUT]What dissapointed me about how Hela was approached by the movie is that there was little addressing on what makes her a Goddess of Death other than "she really likes killing people". Loki is the God of Mischief because he's a master of creating chaos, Thor is a God of Thunder because he can conjure/create thunder, but considering there was no word of Hela ever ruling Hel or Valhala how does she fit...? She mentioned aiding Odin on conquering all the other Realms and having an unsatiable bloodlust, but I think it is really weak as a justification, it was more fitting to call her a Goddess of War than Goddess of Death, because there's more to death than just dying in battle, it is part of nature.[/BLACKOUT]
Something I really like about comic Hela is that for all her wickedness she's somehow a necessary evil, someone has to guard the souls and keep the order in the realms of the dead after all. Her backstory felt cliché and her motivations less complex.

EDIT: SORRY I'M AN IDIOT :dry::dry::dry::dry:

Epona, if you're going to post spoilers here, please please do it behind a spoiler cut. Remember, the movie isn't out for another week in the US so there should be no uncut spoilers anywhere but in the spoiler threads.

I'll be back in a mo to reply, but please edit your post. :yay:

Thanks for editing your post, no worries it's easily done when a movie opens everywhere at different times. :yay:

Anyway, I definitely agree with you to an extent. [BLACKOUT]It really wouldn't have been difficult to establish her as the ruler of Hel at all, they simply had to say that Odin appointed her as the Goddess of Death and gave her, his daughter, the rulership of one of the Nine Realms (a.k.a. Hel). But for some reason they didn't seem all that interested in fleshing out Hela's back story or showing actual flashbacks to the days of Odin and Hela conquering everything in their paths which was as much of a disappointment to me as it clearly was to you.[/BLACKOUT]

On the other hand, I went into this film knowing that Hela wasn't going to adapted completely faithfully and I'd already had time to make my peace with it. I can't think of a single character in the MCU (especially the villains and supporting characters) who are the same as their comic counterparts. Things have to be changed and adapted to suit this particular universe, and I'm okay with that. What's more important to me is that they got the right actress to portray Hela and do her justice that way, and they definitely knocked it out of the park with Cate Blanchett.

I want Cate to put a collar and leash around my neck and pull me across the floor.

Some more (hela) positive Hela responses from twitter (:awesome:)

UGH i love cate blanchett in this SO MUCH. her hela is just so swaggerific.
Cate Blanchett is ****ing phenomenal in the new Thor
We watched Thor Ragnarok last night, great film. Also Cate Blanchett was super sexy/scary and it left me confused
Cate Blanchett regaling a tale in Thor genuinely made me feel like I was watching the opening scene of LOTR. Blissful.
Also, Cate Blanchett as Hela deserves her own franchise. Where she destroys heroes for two hours. Best Marvel villain ever. #ThorRagnarok
Cate Blanchett and Jeff Goldblum are sublime. Tessa Thompson kicks arse but Cate is the shining star.
Just watched #ThorRagnarok...Awesome film, Great performance from #CateBlanchett.
Thor: Ragnarok was a sight for sore eyes. Cate Blanchett as Hela might just be my favorite villain of all time amazing job @TaikaWaititi
Cate Blanchett is my favorite and she dominated every scene she was in, truly a goddess. #ThorRagnarok
Thor Ragnarok is a bombastic spectacle but really good and totally hilarious. Cate Blanchett is sultry and deliciously twisted as Hela.
Cate Blanchett killed it in Thor: Ragnarok.
#ThorRagnarok I enjoyed this part of the Thor story. Hela is a freaking babe, always had a soft spot for Cate Blanchett.
Cate Blanchett as Hela in Thor Ragnarok was brilliant #ThorRagnarok #CateBlanchett
Cate Blanchett is an absolute dream as Hela in Thor. She's so good at being bad, it made me want to cheer her on.
Cate Blanchett's darkly magnetic Hela made me question rooting for the good guys (+Loki) and possibly my straightness. #ThorRagnarok
Jeff Goldblum and Cate Blanchett were mesmeric, and looked as though they too were having SO MUCH FUN. #ThorRagnarok
OK! No spoilers review : Best Thor film, Cate Blanchett is awesome and I laughed more times than I could count.
Deliciously evil Cate Blanchett and blue eyeliner wearing Jeff Goldblum in all future Marvel movies please, thanks! #ThorRagnarok @Marvel @DisneyStudios

I thought Hela was great albeit slightly underused but to be honest, it didn't affect the quality of the film negatively, it's just a slight nitpick.

Btw, for those who have seen it

Pretty sure I saw Hela teleport just as Surtur went to strike the final blow to destroy Asgard.

I have a feeling she will end up finding Thanos, much less powerful than she was due to the loss of Asgard but with her plans for domination still very much at the front of her mind.

I think they will form a bond, perhaps Thanos has heard of the legendary Hela who destroyed millions of people and worlds in the past and has a soft spot for her?

This will lead to her manipulating him to wield the gauntlet to serve her purpose as well as his own possibly?

Could be one way of adapting the whole love affair with Death storyline for the movies?

What do you think?

That was my only complaint really with the film, Hela really deserved more screentime. Hela is my favourite comics character and Cate is my favourite actress so I'm automatically biased, but come on now. But I'm totally willing to forgive Marvel if they put her in another movie *cough*Infinity War*cough* :cwink:

I so desperately want to believe this. Hela can certainly teleport in the comics (it's kinda important for being the Goddess of Death, she has to get anywhere in the Nine Realms quickly to collect her souls), but there was no indication of her being able to do it in the movie. If she could teleport then surely we would have seen her do it at some point before that? And she wouldn't have needed the Bifrost to travel to Asgard, she could have just teleported there. But then again, maybe she only travelled the Bifrost to attack Thor and Loki and get rid of them before she went to Asgard. Who knows.

I'm definitely of the belief that she isn't dead though, that ending was just way too ambiguous. And I just can't accept that Marvel really pushing Thanos and Hela as a couple in the comics right now is merely just a coincidence. Keeping everything crossed we'll see her pop up again in IW.

Cate is like one of those wines that gets better with age.

Ah... I think I may have found the right thread for me.

All hail evil Cate Blanchett. I am completely in love after seeing this film!

I thought of that too because I saw (at least i think i saw)
that right before Surtur's sword hit Hela there's this green smoke. I'm just not really sure about if she could teleport since I'm not an expert on Hela from the comics though I've done my reading about her. Now that Finarfiniel said she can do I believe she did it.

That scene where Thor is calling Hela's attention while he's at the throne room Hela is at the hideaway of the Asgardian then right after that she's at the throne room. It could be that she teleported there or that the film just fast forward to it.

Yes I hope so. Most of us have been hoping for that in the Avengers threads. Can't blame him for falling for Hela!

We all do, dude. We all do.

Oh gods...why does she do this to my soul? Its too much.

She is amazing and just commands such a menacing presence. Beautiful and sexy too.
A great villain and straight pure evil.

Wow, really??

Is it like the green smokey, magic kinda stuff that she steps out of at the beginning of the film? You know, thinking about it, of course Hela can teleport... If she can't, then what the heck was she doing in the scene where she first confronts Thor and Loki?? She just stepped out of thin air, I always just assumed that was simply her being released from her 'prison' after Odin's death, but it's mighty damn convenient that her 'prison' happened to be in Norway in the exact same place that Odin dies. She clearly went there for a reason, maybe because she wanted to see Odin dead (she insinuated as such). And you're right that she got back to the palace from the stronghold where the Asgardians were hiding amazingly quickly once Thor got her attention by banging Gugnir on the ground. Her teleporting there makes sense, it also explains why Skurge isn't with her when she gets back to the palace.

Wow, I'm going to be paying super close attention to that final scene when I go see it again tonight.

Nathan, dude!! Have you seen it yet?? :yay:

Couldn't agree more HD. :woot:

She is just something else.

Cate was every bit as good as possible with the material she was given.

She was fantastic. I don't think her screen time was a problem. I would gladly have taken more since it was a great character, but I think that Cate got everything across that she needed to for the story.

Yes I think she could have obviously benefited from more screen time but she had enough to make a big impact. And there aren't many MCU villains that can compete with Hela.

Dat fine woman...oi

Omg... think of what she can do in a Star Wars The Old Republic film and or series... She could portray a Mandalorian sooo good.

Totally. She owned her part in the movie.

Great to hear from you guys about her role. Looking forward to it. :ilv:
