Christopher Nolan's "Dunkirk" (July 21, 2017) - Part 3

I think Batman, Inception, and Interstellar all have emotion.

I agree, but I remember a common criticism once the Batman movies came out was he couldn't do emotional scenes. TDKR had a good few in it for me.

"You never leave when you're hot."

Still can't believe how much of a downward spiral he's been in ever since he left Nolan's side. His career is at a complete standstill. They were such a great pairing too.

I'm curious if he ever went back to Chris "asking" for his job back. :funny:
He's directing episodes of Amazon's excellent The Tick series right now. There's no shame in directing TV nowadays and he needs to cut his teeth somewhere. Transcendence was a bad start in a number of respects.

Finally got to watch this last night.... wow. Just wow. Visual and audio masterpiece... Zimmer's music kept me on edge the entire movie & the final piece of music had me misty eyed...

Branagh, Hardy's left eyeball, everyone... even Harry Styles... made the movie. Glad it's up for a handful of Oscars and i do believe it will win at least a couple of them.

Our local cinema has added a special single screening of Dunkirk next week!

Never thought I would be able to experience it in cinemas again.

Tickets - booked!

So, what do people think are Dunkirk’s best chances for a win tonight?

It probably only has a shot at Sound Mixing, Sound Editing, and Film Editing.

Bravo to the Sound Editing and Sound Mixing teams for Dunkirk! Well deserved! :woot::hmr:

Nolan got the coldest reception when his name and mug appeared. They just hatin cause they ain't him.

I think there is plenty of jealousy in the industry. He can walk into WB and they will give him $100m for a risky project without blinking an eye. Everyone else struggles to get their movies made. Nolan also refuses to kiss ass on the awards campaign trail. The fact that there is a campaign trail at all is ridiculous, but that's how the game works.

I'm pretty shocked Lee Smith won for Film Editing. Must have done some pretty good campaigning. They snubbed the hell out of him for Inception (not even nominated).

His smug 'losing face' isn't doing him favors. He probably doesn't mean it, but it looks so disrespectful. :funny:

Kobe Bryant now has an Oscar. Guys like Nolan that get repeatedly snubbed...I don't blame them for having a negative view towards the whole process.

I'm happy Lee Smith got the win. 3 wins, definitely not a bad showing for Dunkirk and the awards it won were definitely well-deserved. Baby Driver definitely was deserving of sound and editing too, but it was always going to default the movie that was up for major awards.

Heart of hearts, I think Hans and Nolan deserved statues tonight too, but eh what're ya gonna do- I can't be upset about GDT even though I think Shape of Water was good-not-great.

Nolan won't win until he gets a hold of a decent screenplay with actual characters in it.

He had two of them with Memento and Prestige. Wasn't even nominated for Director in either case. I would take both of them over 99% of the Oscar bait that gets released every year.

I will probably be laughed at for posting this but there a weird rumor going around about Nolan’s next film.
I am stanning over this just so we can see something different compared to his usual thing.

Its a biopic (Not a script written by him)about a 80’s porn star who was on the run from the mob.
The Crazy Days and Nights blog posted this blind that people in the comments seemed to think was talking about Nolan. But it’s a trashy gossip site so hard to take them seriously.

The producers got the best director (A lister who had a very good 2017) for this project. As picky as he is, he jumped at this project. He's not known for his heartfelt movies, but with this script and his recent hit (___________) he's given wide berth. He's one of the few that could be trusted with this material, and do it proper without risk of any problems derailing it. The studio used this project as bait to try and lure him to other projects (his old project), but he won't commit to those. Meanwhile, the studio and director have held semi-formal casting sessions very, very, very secretly.

This movie is about
one very specific female actress who was known mainly in the 1980s era of porn. It is a biopic in that sense. But her fame was such in her time that she crossed over to more mainstream top-shelf publications, and even television interviews. Possibly the most beautiful all-American girl next door to ever have a hardcore career. If you're thinking it is (former underage porn star) you would be wrong. But she's a featured character in it too. Thing is, the star of the story disappeared. Vanished into thin air after her last film. Not vanished dead, because she went on to have a different life. She went to law school, became an attorney, changed her name and had a nice family. Typical soccer mom, Sunday-school teacher, holly homemaker type. Until a few years ago when she was contacted by people who represented the last big mafia family.

Jeff Snieder also said on ‘Meet the Movie Press’ he had started to hear whispers about Nolan’s next film and tweeted this a few weeks ago-

This seems unlikely considering Nolan’s past films and the source but would be pleasantly surprised if it does happen.

Memento was ahead of its time, and 2000 was a strong year. I think had it been released in 2001, a much weaker year, he would have been in the running.

This particular year, I think the academy got it right. Nolan has been snubbed in the past, no doubt. TDK being the obvious one, and his work on Inception should also have got him a nomination for Director. I will not argue these. But, in the case of Dunkirk, it was a technical masterpiece, but I was not wowed by the movie. I felt it lacked story hook that other films like Memento and Inception had. The Shape of Water in contrast, had great art direction, script, acting performances (2 of which were nominated), etc. It was just a more complete movie. Nolan might be the industry's finest working director, I won't disagree. But on their own merits, I do think the Academy got it right this time, despite Nolan having been wronged in the past several times. Let us not forget, GDT also was wronged by the academy when Pan's Labyrinth lost Best Foreign film (and honestly, that should have been a BP movie IMO).

Nolan definitely has more nominations and eventual wins to come.

That would be a truly bizarre turn! There's almost nothing about that sounds like something Nolan would do. Maybe that would be the point?

I'm intrigued...
