Most realistic comic book story I've ever read.

oh, well hold on a second there: realize that, thus far, you've more than likely only read superhero comics. So this is probably one of the most realistic SUPERHERO stories out there. You'll want to add Watchmen to your list. Many consider that the greatest comic series of all time. It's a 12 issue series from 1986, Very realistic, for a superhero book, and a chief example of comics as literature (although personally not a fan, but I respect it for what it is. Most comic fans will scream its praises from the top of the hills)

If you want some more realistic superhero tales, I recommend the following:

Marvels
Daredevil: Underboss and Daredevil: Out (one follows the other. READ IN ORDER!)
Superman: Secret Identity
Watchmen

but like I was saying, thus far, you've limited yourself to SUPERHERO stories. There's a HUGE section of amazing comics that have sprung up over the last 15 years that have nothing to do with superheroes, and a lot of them have no fantasy elements whatsoever:

Nothing/little to do with superheroes but still have fantastical elements but will blow your socks off:

Preacher (not to be read if you are easily offended)
Planetary
Ex Machina
Price of Baghdad
Fables
Transmetropolitan
The Walking Dead
Conan (by Kurt Busiek)
Uncle Sam


No fantasy elements whatsoever:

Box Office Poison
Mail Order Bride
Negative Burn
Ghost World
Road to Perdition
A History of Violence

There are also actually a number of extremely well done and gripping non-fiction and auto-biographical comics:

Fortune and Glory
Blankets
PyongPyang
Persepolis
American Splendor

these are ALL worth your time, depending on how open of a mind you have

I got my hands on Kingdom Come. That was definitely a two thumbs up! DC has really gotten their act together. Except for Batman and the Justice League rebirth early issues, when I left comics, DC was pretty much going down the toilet. Now, it seems like I can't run out of terrific new graphics novels or mini-series from these guys. I have yet to find some Marvel stories in the last ten years that match the greatness of some of these DC storylines like Kingdom Come, Identity Crisis, Superman Sacrifice, Green Lantern Reborn, Death of Superman, and so on.

Thanks for the recommendation on Invincible, I'll have to check that out. Marvel and DC were still the two kings back when I left, with only a few noteworthy additions by Dark Horse, and I guess Todd McFarlane was just starting his own branch at the time. Speaking of... whatever happened to Spawn?

Glad to know I'm not the only who could never get into that title. Very overrated back then. Actually, I think I enjoyed his early stuff on The Hulk more than his Spider-Man stuff. (Maybe because he wasn't writing it. )

As far as I know the Batman/Spawn crossover was drawn by him.
