Comedy is Dead

Will Farrel, Stiller, Vaughn, Wilson... these guys got potential... I mean not everything has been a smash hit but Old School was the best pure comedy movie I had seen since Dumb and Dumber... so I think its still there... but I am tired of the latest Van Wilder's, Scary movies, Epic movies that are just painful to watch...

i loved van wilder... i thought it was the best national lampoon movie.

Napoleon Dynamite? Nacho Libre? BENCHWARMERS?

you deserve to die.

Libre still infuriates me some seven months later. It had an amazing trailer, and I was the last to remain in the theater because I refuse to walk out of a movie.

I dodged a bullet in the summer, we were planning to see Libre but when we arrived were offered free passes to Clerks II. You all know how hilarious that was. Then last month I watch Libre on DVD, I didn't even finish watching it, The Office was on.

Comedy is dead? Last I checked Wedding Crashers, Borat, and Little Miss Sunshine made a hell of a profit and are funny as hell. It isn't dead it is just **** is getting advertised so much that if they do it enough they will make some money.

You guys are all naming some of the greatest comedies ever but not one has mention Slap Shot, easily just as classic as Animal House.

Anything involving Billy Murray(minus Garfield)

I saw Clerks 2, it was decent. I got bored with it, wasn't as good as Clerks I or even Jay & Silent Bob.

When you are looking back at the great comedy classics, it's easy to forget the crap that came with them. For every Vacation, Airplane and Big there was a Collision Course, Vice-a-Versa, or a Stop or my Mom Will Shoot. Comedy is not dead, and I would argue that there are more great classics being made now that will stand the test of time than in the 80's and 90's. The 60's and 70's were very good decades for comedic revolutions and innovations, but they are slowly fading from memory. I will agree that a lot of comedy is sad today, but there were just as many pathetic comedies in the past, you just don't remember them. Time has made you only recall the great classics, which were few and far between.

How about Animal House...waaaaaaay funnier than Van Wilder. And I'd have to put Vacation and Christmas Vacation above Van Wilder, too.

well, that's a matter of opinion. i've never liked any of the 'vacation' movies, and animal house was good, but i don't get the cult status it has. i didn't think it was that great.

i think i know whats wrong with comedy nowadays POLITICAL CORRECTNES as long as thats around nothings funny

well, before i rip on you for what you just said, i'd love for you to explain it.

how do you figure that political correctness has, in any way changed what people can or cannot say or do in movies?

That is just...wow...Borat? Anything by Dave Chapelle? Kevin Smith?

P.C. and good taste have no bearing on good comedy...not now...not ever.

What about Bruce Almighty, i thought that film was great, and the Trueman show, anyone remember that? Also i went to see Borat at the cinema's, I thought it was hilarous, so did all my friends.

The difference is brilliant political and social satire vs. stupidity. While stupidity can be funny it has no real long term value. The jokes grow old fast and shock value wears off after about the second time you've seen it. Good comedies rely on wit (Monty Python) and clever satire (old school simpsons) because those far withstand the test of time.

The trueman show wasn't really a comedy. Borat was great.

No comedies with Jim Carrey are generally unfunny.

But as said numerous times just look around you have Borat, Little Miss Sunshine, Anchorman, Old School, Meet the Parents/Fockers, The Matador, Wedding Crashers, The 40-Year Old Virgin, Dodgeball, etc.

BTW Van Wilder was mediocre. Like most Ryan Renyolds movies, he is funny but the overall movie is not.

What Jim Carrey is really funny! But Anchorman, old school, wedding Crashers, the 40 year old virgin, and Dodgeball. I have no idea why people call them comedys. Theres not much in them to make them that.

So, yesterday I got home from work and saw my wife on the treadmil watching Back To The Future part I. I only glanced at the movie...and somehow ended up watching a good half hour of it, enjoying every second.

Then it got me to thinking. What happened to great comedies? Nowadays, it's pretty much the same thing. Recycled sex jokes to appeal to the college crowd or movies which claim to be comedies are turn out to be nothing but stale rehashes or sad attempts at humor. Good ones are few and far between.

What happened to a GOOD comedy? Where are the Back to the Futures (while it is an adventure, it's also a comedy) or where are our Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, or where are our Monty Python and the Holy Grail? Or The Princess Brides or The Griswold Vacation films?

It made me wonder...maybe it's not merely the lack of good writing...but good comedian actors that can do even a medicore script justice. We are lacking the Chevy Chases, the Steve Martins (well, he IS trying to make a comeback), etc...

Now, to be fair...there are some great comedians out there. Some that is really on top of the rest would be Ben Stiller and Will Ferril, both of which have done some GREAT films (personally I love Elf and Meet The Parents)

It just seems like comedy for the MOST part is stale...relying on the same "shock" or jokes to appeal....Anyway, don't mean to go emo on you all. Just my thoughts.

Obviously you haven't seen Ghost Rider.
