Conan - Part 1

Looked pretty cool, from what I could tell. I watched it on a small computer monitor, so some of the action was just a blur, but the overall look and vibe seemed pretty cool.

"No man should live in chains." is not a Conan sentiment IMO.

You kidding? That's totally Conan. He would agree that you fight to the death rather than be made a prisoner!

Also, it looks alright. Bad trailer music but this will easily be better than Clash of the Titans purely because it's Conan. That movie was so bad that even if this is the same level of quality, at least I can geek out over Hyboria

Another Robert E. Howard easter egg in the trailer as Conan says;

"Run from me, and I'll tear apart the mountains to find you! I'll follow you to hell!". From The Frost Giant's Daughter:cwink:

Wasn't that an L Sprague DeCamp rewrite of an unpublished Conan tale?

Oh.....Conan absolutely would prefer death to being in chains or servitude, and he would expect any "real" man to behave the same.

However, to me at least,.... "No man should live in chains".... is more a societal statement, i.e. Conan wouldn't waste a moment of energy to ensure the "freedom of all men" if you will.

He has no use for such ideas as they arise from civilized moralities, moralities that due to his savage heritage he cannot comprehend.

Of course I don't know the context of the line. In the proper setting it could be Conan appropriate.

No. It's absolutely Howard's "Frost Giant's Daughter".

As for the "chains" statement, it depends on the whole context of the scene wether it's Conan-like or not. I guess we'll eventually find out.

Why does the trailer look like an R-rated Prince of Persia?!

Everything looks cool, I think I spotted some Picts and Aquilonians in there. And the architecture and stuff looks good. Momoa looks awesome.

I'm not sure if I care for the "save the world" feel of the trailer. Conan doesn't need to feel that epic to me. Why can't we just have Conan and his girl and some mook sailors or soldiers and a lost city for them to explore? Throw in a wizard and a few monsters and some tropes from horror and heist movies and that's all one needs imo.

Maybe what I want would be better suited to an HBO series or one of those Creepshow-style anthology films.

Looks like fun, though. Much better than Clash and about 100000000000000 times better than that crappy Immortals trailer I saw the other day.

Agreed, on all points.

But Conan always saves the world, he just never really cares about it, it's usually a byproduct of some selfish intentions or just work lol

Conan is basically a more intelligent version of Hulk. His actions are pretty much of his own accord, but if the person threatening to wreak havoc happens to be someone opposing him, it's just a side benefit for the rest of us to have someone on our side.

Yeah, I kinda' see what you're getting at. In "Solomon Kane"(film) there was that epic "save the world" feel also, although the Kane stories by Howard had a more pulpy Lovecraft/Lester Dent-type feel as opposed to a more Elric-like "chosen champion" grand adventure. I guess it all has to do with making a compromise with the studios who worry staying to far away from the "traditional" story-telling format, particularly in a film of this type of genre. Nevertheless, the film did capture the essence of the Solomon Kane character and it was a solid film. I feel it will be the same with "Conan The Barbarian".

Saw that new trailer...ugh, what a waste of a reboot.

I love reading the comments of the Arnold fans about how Jason is no Conan, etc. Clearly never cracked a Conan book in their lives.

We got a couple good shots of the Picts and the Aquilonians (I'm so glad the Roman influence shows). The set design had a lot of Red Nails, Queen of The Black Coast, God In The Bowl and Tower Of The Elephant.

There is also a line in there directly from The Frost Giant's Daughter "Run from me, and I'll tear apart the mountains to find you! I'll follow you to hell!" That along with the line from the previous trailer "... I live, I love, I slay, and I am content" from Queen Of The Black Coast so I'm quite happy. Seems these guys actually read their Conan rather than John Milius who stated on the Conan DVD commentary that he just wanted to make a Viking movie but did Conan because of financial backing.

Anyone also notice Conan is wearing the necklace made of animal teeth from the Frazetta paintings?

By far the movie I'm most excited about this summer, I never thought I would be able to say that with a Green Lantern movie actually looming (childhood dreams coming true!)

I think I've ran out of adjectives for those "lovable"(:cmad:) Arnold-fanboys. I really think in the end they won't matter that much. The mainstream audience that would make this film a success are not going to be the people who went to see the John Milius-directed film. Alot of the people who make blockbuster-films successful today are the younger folks who weren't around when the original film came out. This film is going to depend more on the people who enjoyed "300", and "The Lord of The Rings" trilogy(and possibly "Thor") than on the fans of the original film, the way I see it.

Screenwriter Sean Hood definately did his homework with the Robert E. Howard story-references, and director Marcus Nispel seems have strongly embraced the Frazetta-imagery in a much richer way than he did in "Pathfinder".

I just found my vhs of Pathfinder the other week, I'd taped it off tv about a year ago and couldn't recall what I'd taped it on, so I'll be checking that out as a Conan warm up.
After tanking through the first four volumes of SSoC over the last year and a half, I have to say this is the movie I'm most looking forward to out of Conan, Thor, Cap, GL, hopefully it will be good enough to catch on and we can get some sequels. I am not keen on seeing this type of movie in 3D though, I have not seen any movies in 3D, but somehow I don't want any techno type feel to the gritty S&S type vibe I like to get from these films, in other words, I want to feel like I am in that world, and that suspension of disbelief would be more difficult to maintain if I was looking at it through a pair of future goggles. And even apart from that, after hearing the reports of the CoTT crappiness converstion(and some folk said Thor scenes were hampered by the brightness being affected) I don't want anything like that spoiling the experience.

"Pathfinder" is not a great film, but I think it does show Nispel's potential if he was guided by a more coherent script and have a more competent production team behind him, which with Conan he does seem to have(not to mention bigger budget). "Pathfinder" does have some very good imagery and some well-executed action, though.

Thanks, yeah, I recall the discussions of it on the old Conan thread, and opinions varied, so I guessed it was not a great movie, but I thought I might find something interesting in it, and get an indication of his skills in a similiar-ish type of film.

I think the trailer looks great! I only wonder if it will do well or not.

I just wanna see a conan with bigger muscle than i have
but so far i kinda like what i see because of their features
most of those guys looks like they're from the stone dark ages or a frazetta painting.
Good!..very good !
anyways who's playing conan ?
he looks like a little like the guy from that show where people goes to other planets through a portail and there's a city atlantis or something..!
I'd recognise his forehead anywhere.

I didn't like all the quick edits. You saw everything, but Conan. The film itself does look great though, but I can't imagine how they're going to recoup their money on this film without some sort of enormous marketing campaign.
