Technically the first to go for colorful costumes, in this new modern era of superhero films, was Sony with Spider-man.
I've gotten used to the idea of them being in black leather so I rarely complain about it. It makes sense given the time the franchise was first made. But First Class showed that you can switch things up and make it work. Those costumes probably take the cake as my favorite in the X-men franchise. I don't see why they couldn't return to something like that.
I think the pictures Pavlov posted are fantastic, and would be a great route to take. As someone else said, they are colorful but uniform, and are visually similar enough to previous FoX-men costumes so it wouldn't be a huge departure. I really hope we get something similar to that in AoA.

Sorry I meant the fantastic four as in being a full group if that makes sense. Yeah I really like the ones Pavlov did too. I would be more than happy with them![]()
I have quite a big opinion on this for the fact its what I am currently writing my dissertation on.
X1 came out at a time where they HAD to go with the leather look, they wouldnt have gotten the film made otherwise, their uniform was the first thing we saw as a collective on screen. to see them all in individual colourful costumes would have hit us with the batman and robin problem. Sammy sheldon differ and christopher nolan commented on costumes saying how there are certain things that they couldnt do years ago, Nolan said that between batman begins and dark knight, even being able to move the cowl was a major thing.
The marvel movies allowed for each character to have their origin explained, their costumes explained and their worlds explained, something that the x-men as a team film didnt manage to do.
If the avengers was released as a solo movie without the buildup behind it, the characters would have all been mashed together in a film that people would have looked at and gone, oh god this doesnt make sense. Even films like Kick-Ass and Super explain the costumes. The costumes in FC were done colourfully because they had an opportunity to use the original colour of kevlar and have it make sense even saying in the film that it was to stop bullets.
For the X-Men to all just appear now in DOFP in individual colourful costumes would make no sense. 1. there are no superheroes in this world at the moment. 2. In these films mutants are hidden for the moment which is why magneto being the only character to wear a costume in DOFP was symbolic of him being a figurehead. 3.They will most likely introduce costumes that are more colourful but in a gradual sense. 4. Fox has now proven with deadpool that they are not afraid to do comic accurate but that doesnt mean Singer or any director should just force them into the film. 5. Even the other studios have made comprimises with costumes, Marvel's Cap costume is noticably darker, Thor still doesnt have a helmet and hawkeye is now in something more akin to the ultimate hawkeye. DC have darkend Supermans costume and changed it, Wonderwomans costume isnt blue and red so far as we know at the moment.
I really get annoyed when people go for fox over these costumes when, I hasten to add, they were the first to go for colour with the fantastic four ones!
Forgive me if I have come across as rude, but the X-Men have always been in uniform at one point or another and a lot of the time in the ultimate line and 616 itself, its been black!

Everyone knows the X-films were conservative thanks to the debacle that was Batman and Robin. It's old news and we get it. It's also a "go to" crutch for this franchise.
Let me ask a simple question: Do you guys believe an X-film done in the same matter of fact style as the MCU would honestly look silly? Do you honestly believe the costumes just can't be done? (do I really need to say no bright shiny spandex or Power Rangers since those are two popular fall backs used to argue against more accurate costumes?) Do you think the film would be a catastrophic failure or huge success? Why the fear?
It is up to the director to have a vision that makes it work. What I find funny is that it's so obvious that FOX wants what Marvel has but isn't willing to go all in. They want to maintain one foot in the Singerverse where it's safe and secure and minimizes any potential risk.
The real question is will be continue to see the progression FOX/Singer has made inching towards a more faithful X-men or will the X-films continue to hesitate going full on comicbook?
It can be done.
Be kind...

Olivia Munn posted (what appears to be) a tease for the Psylocke costume.

Sorry. Which Psylocke costume is this supposed to resemble?
