Ant-Man Dammit, Janet! The official Wasp thread

Here's the thing, that transcript is slightly inaccurate. His words are slightly jumbled, but you can hear him say the words "...alienated from me." What I heard him say was something more like:

But unfortunately during this process, I had a tragic personal accident [that] happened with my wife. My daughter, Evangeline -- pardon, Hope -- was alienated from me, and so I’ve had to pass my powers and strengths onto a mentor[sic].

Douglas said a tragic personal accident happens; a death of Janet is not confirmed. Just saying.

This is very true, I just put my feelings out there is a "just in case" situation. I can even take if she's dead (although I don't want her to be) as long as she's not disregarded. Again, neither Wasp status or death status have been confirmed, I'm just saying if it goes there, this is how I would feel about it.

You are right. I just watched the video. I do take back what I said, but I don't think that Janet is dead. I think that she's just not around and that Janet raised Hope on her own.. and now Hope has come back. Sounds like whatever happened in his initial Ant-Man experiments tore Hank and Janet apart which wouldn't be quite surprising as Hank is quite obsessive with his work. Maybe his work was more important than her at the time. Should make for interesting movie viewing if Hope manages to bring Hank and Janet back together.

So Marvel's official Ant-Man press release has been updated to reflect Lily playing Hope Van Dyne.

I wonder if they might copy the comics and have everyone think Janet is dead but she is really trapped in the microverse? It might be a twist that is too M. Night Shyamalan though ;)

dats BEAUUUUTEEFUL!

and this would TOTALLY work in a 1960s setting!

shouldn't the title for this be changed to Hope?

We need A New Hope thread.

We first need official confirmation that Evangeline will be playing the Wasp in the movie but for now Marvel is being mute on the subject probably because she won't be playing Wasp in this movie or they would have released that information by now.:( I would be disappointed if Evangeline wasn't getting to play the Wasp but I would still see the movie because of her.

^

If she isn't playing the Wasp in this movie, it will be heavily hinted that she will take up the mantle in the very near future. There's no other Earthly reason to cast Evangeline and then have her unleash the Waspiest haircut the world has ever seen.

I think it's pretty much guaranteed she'll be Wasp at some point.

Maybe in the movie, Hope is an actress starring in a production of Chicago as Velma Kelly. :p

This is one film where I think Marvel should go all in and not hold anything back. In that regard, Hope should become the Wasp here.

Some of what he said doesn't really add up.

"in 1963" he invented a serum to shrink a human being, and a device to communicate with ants. And that "during this process" the tragic accident happens... "

so does that mean Evangeline Lilly's Hope is in her fifties?

Either Hank Pym was married twice like in the comics or Hank becoming Ant-Man and Janet's accident were two different events.

I think he accidently stepped on Joe the ant, who had become his best friend. Hank never forgave himself. Although I could be wrong.

If this accident did happen to Jan, how did Hope come to be then?

I suppose "during this process..." doesn't necessarily mean "while inventing the serum". It could mean "in the ensuing 15 years of moonlighting as a secret super-spy...".

It not like he's giving us the entire script.

That's a good observation. I'm going to guess it's the later, because having him be married twice just seems unnecessarily complicated from a script point of view.

If this is the case, then it means that between his discovery and his wife's death, there was a significant period of time when they could have been doing further research/mad science/crime fighting, and that he and Jan may have been active as Wasp and Ant-Man for a time. I'd rather like that to be the case. I think it would be a sufficient nod to the original Janet and her relationship with Hank (but only if Lilly also gets to be Wasp and she's given good material).

I think he's indicating that the process killed Jan but not necessarily the first time. So say he became Ant-Man in the 60's and had his career and such and then in the 70's after Hope was born, Jan got into an accident involving the Pym Particles and died. Maybe she even tried to give herself powers to become his partner or something.

So basically my prediction of Wasp being Hank Pym's daughter came true.
