Well, Young was very much working under Elfman's shadow, similiarly to how Ottman was working under Williams' shadow for SUPERMAN RETURNS.

It's not like BATMAN FOREVER where Young could do completely different themes. In this case he had to adhere to not only the musical continuity of the Spidey franchise but also take from preestablished themes that HAD to correlate to the music he was composing.

I agree, but it seems to me that he was under very strict constraints and had little room to add in his own style to the music. They could've just used only the absolutely required themes, and then given him the freedom to add his own style. I'm sure Young would've stayed in the continuity of elfmans themes while adding something new, but instead they opted to use all of the music Danny elfman made, and let Young do the themes that Elfman did not do. Overall it seems that they didn't give Young a fair chance.

Actually...I praise Ottman's music in Superman Returns. He did a great job and wasn't really in William's shadow per say.

I agree, but by that I mean Ottman's work is often overlooked by Williams' stirring and very memorably recongizable themes.

Good point.

Yeah, but Ken Thorne (Supes II & III) and Alex Courage (Supes IV) were in Williams shadow alot more than Ottman.

Ottman's stuff sucked balls in SR. I liked Thornes Superman 2 and Courages Supes 4 much better than the crap Ottman did for SR. And he just kept up with the stupid choir stuff. I mean it was like that was all he knew to try to make it sound grand and it failed. Williams used a choir sparingly in STM and he still made all of the movie very big and grand.

I will have to go with Danny Elfman's left over themes. hia theme for the characters in these films are so unique and I think it fit each character amazingly.

It's hard to live up to Elfman but Chris Young did an admirable job!

This is one point that makes me really angry, why bother use another composer when all of the memorable music was composed by Elfman anyway.

For some reason, the speakers did sound a bit low with the showing that I attended.

Also, during the finale, where Spider-Man swings into the construction site, I felt the Spidey Theme could have been a bit louder, more pronounced, but I am not sure if that was the low speakers, or just the editing of the music in the scene.
Young just didn't know how to do the themes right, because...they weren't his to begin with. The way he did them were horribly understated, hollow, and weak...no where near as powerful and emotional as Elfman's. Sandman's theme was alright, just typical Young stuff though. I dk... For some reason it bothered me that Spider-Man gained a new theme when he had the dark suit. I understand the reasoning behind it, but it just seems like since Young didn't know how to do his original theme he just wanted to give him a new one altogether.

I was really excited for this score, but overall it sounded like a typical Young score (the first couple Hellraisers, Ghost Rider) and didn't stand out as being Spider-Man 3, the biggest movie ever!

The symbiote/black suit theme wasn't that bad. Possibly the only good piece of original music that Young composed.

Yeah, it wasn't bad, definitely better than Sandman's.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I've seen the scene where Sandman "wakes up" so to speak. And thought that piece of music was absolutely beautiful, and fitting for the scene, in which I felt quite sad for Sandman/Flint Marko... will report back after seeing the movie tomorrow. ;)

The music wasn't bat at all. Although I prefer Elfman's theme, Young's music was still pretty good. I would get the score if they released it yet. Have they released the score?

Of course Elfman's better, but I still loved Young's Sandman and Symbiote themes.

I doubt they are gonna release anything. There's not enough original music to even bother with it.

Youngs score was pretty lame. One bit sounded like a freaking private eye film! DUNN DUN DUUUUNNNN!!!! DUUNNN! whats that all about

Elfman's theme are 100% times better than the crap Young used .

I still like Elfman's theme for Doc Ock & The Goblin. I would've loved to have heared his theme's for VENOM & Sandman .

The score for this film was so frickin cheesy :(

Elfman FTW. His themes were the only good pieces in this movie IMO.

i thought young music was very disappointing....very underwhelming for a film of this magnitude. It is unfortunate that raimi and elfman had the falling out they did. One can only imagine what elfman would have done.

On the whole. I thought that anything that I didn't recognise as Elfman, sucked.

Except the scene where Sandman reforms for the first time. That was beautiful.

But I absolutely hated music when Spidey is revealed upside down in the Symbiote costume for the first time. All those trumpet sounds... arghh!!

Also, i've seen the movie twice now, and both time the opening credits caught me out. It's like towards the end, after the symbiote theme, it returns to the Elfman main title Spidey theme and it builds up and up.... and.... then we're in the movie. The film's started. There was no climax to the original Elfman theme. What's with that!?
