Danny Elfman vs. Chris Young

Danny Elfman by far, I did not care for Chris Young's score very much.

Chirs Young's score felt very out of place. Especially when Spider-Man first sees himself in the black suit hanging upside down. It didn't feel right.

I thought Young used trumpets and all those kinds of instruments too much. I disliked it a lot.

Elfman's score constantly complemented the action in the first two movies. It could be poignant and memorable without overstepping its bounds. There were a few scenes in each movie where it was downright beautifully tied in (such as when Parker mourns Uncle Ben's death on the Chryslar building and then goes home, Doc Ock's death, Peter giving up MJ at the docks, Harry finding his dab's stuff).

Young rehashed Elfman's work but it was as noticeable as when John Williams did not return for the Superman movies. The score's there but the magic is missing. And the music was at times intrusive, especially when he finds his black costume which just brought the scene down a level and made it messy and the symbiote theme itself was utterly bad and nothing compared to the GG or Doc Ock themes. Sandman's was all right, but not very memorable in comparison. His best work was when he was just replaying one of Elfman's themes.

Yeah, I agree with DACrowe.

The opening credits just didn't get me pumped up this time. Elfman's opening music for the first two movies never fails to get me excited for things to come. Young's music was just... bleh.

I actually think Elfman scoring would have made some of the cornier scenes more bearable, and the emotional scenes less unintentionally funny.

Youngs music had a campier quality to it, IMO. I don't know what it is but I can't put my finger on it.

Campy!? Wh--!? Oh God, no, I haven't seen the movie yet but I hope it's as good as the first two and not... campy!?

Elfman's music by far. I actually cringed a few times in the movie due to Young's score. He definitely didn't do a good job with symbiote Spidey's score, too campy and not very dark.

There were a couple of moments I liked. I did like the jazz music that lplayed durring the Mansion fight. I also liked Marko's theme.

I didn't like the Young part of the opening credits, but I'm glad they kept Elfman's theme, and still used that motif throughout the movie.

So... I saw the film, and basically I'm gonna have to be the odd one out here, and say I loved Young's score... especially the theme for Sandman's daughter, which was beautiful and tragic.

I liked that music but I agree that it didn't fit. It should have been darker not heroic or whatever!

Young did a great job but Elfman would have without a doubt been better. Elfman has a unique style to his music that is much better than Youngs.

it's a shame he didn't do the score, it probably would've been much more memorable.
The score just didn't stick with me for this movie.

He cut the Peter Parker theme out of the end of the main titles...actually I think it was only used once, when Peter pulls the red and blues back out...so inexcusable. Now that I'm thinking about it, maybe that's why the movie felt off, you couldn't go five minutes in the previous two without Elfman weaving in the PP theme (which was fine with me).

But I can't believe you guys are hating on the symbiote Spidey theme--I thought it was the only good music in the film, way better than any of the times Young was trying to splice in Elfman's stuff.

I loved the Black symbiote Spidey theme . And Sandman's theme was good too. However Venom's theme sucked .

In terms of theme rating

1. Elfman's Spidey heroic theme (from 1 , 2 & 3)

2. Doc Ock's theme

3. Young's Black Symbiote Spiderman theme

4. Elfman's The Green Goblin's theme

5. Elfman's Peter & Mary Jane theme

6. Youngs Sandman Theme

I have to echo what everyone else is saying here.

But my biggest gripe is the black costume theme. Sounded too much like a 30's style heroic theme.

Young should have cut the trumpets out and instead use a dark orchestral/chorus type of theme.

Really? I think I picked one up, it was the screeching violins hitting the same high note over and over again, most notable when Venom and Spidey square off on the taxi, I think there are clips of it floating around somewhere.

No contest, Danny Elfman. Nothing memorable about Young's score. In fact, I would say it was pretty poor overall, IMO.

I can't wrap my head around this thread!

I love me some good Danny Elfman, but his Spiderman work is among the most uninspiring and immemorable music I've heard for a "superhero" movie. If it weren't for the fact that a second movie followed, I would never have realized what the so called "themes" for Spiderman were. And if it was meant to be more dramatic, like say, Batman Begins score(which I doubt), it failed on that account as well.

I'm glad he's gone, and I found myself really enjoying Sandman's music from a dramatic standpoint. And the jazz music during the Harry/Peter fight was great. It was a risk of a move that I'd usually expect from Elfman but never got in Spiderman.
