Dante's Inferno

Not saying its good or bad, but that still qualifies as an adaptation... If it has quotes, imagery and a character name, thats all you need to say you're adapting something.

Not for me personally. If you take away the names, and they hadn't pegged this as an adaption from the beginning I really doubt anyone would have said, 'Wow, this is definitely a rip of the Divine Comedy'. It's like if someone had adapted The Great Gatsby as a GTA style free form game with a gangster story in the style of something like the Godfather and used the names from Gatsby. Sure, technically that would make it an adaption, but it's so divorce from its source, I personally find it hard to believe it as an adaption.

Sure, there would have been the nine circle but at this point that has been so ingrained in culture anyway. It's something they probably would have done whether they were 'taking' from the source or not

It's more than a couple of names and imagery. More ******** from the haters.

The game interprets and depicts all the levels of hell Dante traveled through in the poem.

Yeah, if I disagree with you, of course my opinion is ********, the beauty of forum logic :whatever:

The funniest thing for me, is I'm not even hatah'in. I'm more or less just commenting on the idea of calling something an adaption. I've actually repeatedly said I would probably play the game later down the line and that I enjoyed the demo. Apparently anything that's not, 'My God, this is awesome, screw the haters' is hatah'in. Well then, I guess I'm king Hatah

Haha yeah i know i seem ignorant regarding your posts. I mean we should just disagree and agree. I like the idea they've adapted from the poem and you don't. But lets just wait and give the final judgement in Feb.

I mean the descriptions from the poem regarding the 9 circles of hell have been cool and the game has been loyal to it, excluding what we've seen of Fraud tho. Fraud seems to be just this Arena-battle area before the final boss, but my god does the poem have an awesome design for Lucifer.

Like I said, not saying its a good adaptation, but its still an adaptation... Does it really surprise you that much though? Hollywood have adapted countless properties, with far less relevance to the original that this... It's just the sad world we live in I guess Teardrop. For instance, I'm currently really annoyed that they've just cast Conan, and they're planning to 'Remake' the series... But does that mean they're actually going to try a proper origin, and be true to the original Robert E. Howard source material? No, they're just doing a f***ing remake of the 80's Arnie films, which is the stupidest, worst representation of Conan ever...

So I know how you feel about having a beloved piece of literature misrepresented, especially when people jump on the bandwagon who know nothing of the brilliance of the original, but sadly thats just the way things work... I'm just gonna enjoy DI as an action game, with awesomely macabre designs...

Oh, I realize all that, but I still comment on it. Really, I've been done with it a couple of time, but it keeps popping up, so I have to go into action :o

Yeah, I know that too well... Do you ever get the feeling that sometimes these forums aren't the best for our mental well being?

I just wanna apologize to Teardrop incase i've been too ignorant! I guess i do ignore your well made points too much and just see you too as a hater! :( <3?

Do you really tho? Are you that attached to the Divine Comedy that any time you see the word 'adaptation' you have to jump out and scream ITS NOT AN ADAPTATION ARGGGGGHHHH!!!

You are just like those ppl that hate Rock Band/Guitar Hero because you aren't playing a real instrument. Who the hell cares? If it gets kids interested in music, then thats a good thing. Same for this. If some individual says ya know, i really enjoyed that game, im going to go check out the source for this games 'adaptation'. Whats bad about that? Are you afraid they'll go back, read the poem and be bored to death only to go back to playing this game??

Pat, if Teardrop is a massive fan of the Divine Comedy, surely you can understand his irritation when people show ignorance of the original source... I bet you'd feel exactly the same way if there was an adaptation of something you love... Say, an Uncharted film starring Ben Affleck as Drake? ;P

Uh, yeah, that's more or less what I just said.

The Rock Band/Guitar Hero analogy is pretty paper thin. And I really don't care if people go to the book or not(though I doubt many will), that isn't the point that I've been talking about. I've already given my views and opinions on the subject and why I feel that way about it. And I'm not going to change those opinions just because 'It's only a loose adaption, who cares!'.

Did you even bother to read the rest of the stuff I posted here at all? Because, frankly, I'm not going over all of it again. Apparently you can't say anything remotely critical of this aspect of the game in here without someone jumping up and down, 'It's just loose, blah, blah, blah'.

Too right. It's like when people would try to justify X-Men Origins:Wolverine to me by saying "Don't take it seriously, it's just a silly and fun action movie!" Grrrrr..... Even thinking about it now is making me angry again... Time to stab someone in the jaw.

I don't even really consider myself a 'massive' fan. My main point has been questioning the idea of this as an adaption of something when it seems to take very little from it. And, well, this is more or less what I've been driving out with this criticism (and personally, I think don't think anyone has given that significant an answer to what I was trying to say all along):

My optimistic side wants to think this is just some kind of bizarre homage to the Divine Comedy or something of that nature. My cynical side wants to think that this is no more than a ploy of EA and Visceral's part to make a game that's generic and indistinguishable and bring interest on it when otherwise there would have been none. Only time will tell, I suppose, but that's the main problem that's somewhat chipping at me about this game almost from the beginning

If that's not good enough, well I guess I'm just 'stupid and disgusting' like VileOne says, or I guess I'm just like 'those people' like Pat says, or I'm a closed mind dogmatic nutter like Visceral Studios says. Does it matter all that much, is it going to stop me from playing the game at some point? Considering how I've basically said the exact opposite of that multiple times, no. It's still something I'm critical of. And that's all, I'm really not going to say anymore about it. Honestly, I've said all I care about this, and I won't say anymore unless someone wants to bring something other than 'it's loose, who cares!' or 'all this complaining is disgusting'.

Well I think theres a difference between an adaptation and being inspired by something... and Visceral games were clearly inspired by the Divine Comedy, based on the environment designs and the imagery in Hell, but adaptation is still debatable...

Really, I must fail the big fail on the internet since this is what I have been trying to say almost all along. And I'll just say, if I'm wrong, and this game ends up being incredibly faithful to the poem that it blows the world away with its faithfulness, ol' Teardrop will come into this thread, laugh at Teardrop's silly ideas, laugh at Teardrop's self and admit that I was wrong and this has every right to be an 'adaption' and wasn't just some ploy to get attention from EA/Visceral. Okay, that's all . Unsubcribed and everything, not even going to look or come into this thread until I've played the game for myself. VileOne won't have to look at anymore disgusting complaining anymore from me :fhm:.

My point was, dont let it bother you so much. You act as tho you wrote the Divine Comedy and EA is trashing your work. I get that ur upset, it just seemed like you were trying too hard to defend it. Maybe I just misread the post i quoted.

Well then you'd lose that bet. I have no ties to the Uncharted franchise other than im a fan. Would i be disappointed? Sure, but i wouldnt feel as tho id need to 'speak up' every time some used the word adaptation.

Iv already been in that situation, with the Resident Evil film franchise.

Thanks for the video! Looks great! Shame Limbo only seems to be about 1 hour, wonder how long the game will be in totally... Hopefully 8-10 hours.. like around 1 hour per circle. :p

I watched that whole video narrated by people who were actually into the game and weren't haters.

Looks awesome and I can't wait to play the final version.

There was a live Q&A with Jonathan Knight, an EP on Dante's Inferno, at Kotaku today. He answered my question :)

I asked: Which section/circle of Hell in Dante's Inferno do you think will impress people the most?

He answered: I hope every level will impress, because we really tried hard to make each one unique and special. It sort of depends on your style... if you are really hard-core on the combat & combo side of things, then you'll love Fraud. If you like puzzles, then probably Greed. If you like gross & weird, then definitely Gluttony. I really feel there's something unique in all the levels.
