Daredevil Daredevil General Discussion Thread - Part 4

I wonder... do you think this show could be a game changer for the superhero genre? If it's as good as we're all hoping it is, do you think we'll see more fans clamoring for superhero TV shows (that don't follow the procedural/freak-of-the-week format) instead of superhero movies?

Up until now, the superhero genre on TV has been average at best. You have shows like Arrow and The Flash, which are pretty good, but also fall into soap opera territory regularly, and routinely play the aforementioned freak-of-the-week card. Then you have stuff like SHIELD and Agent Carter, which tie into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but are on the periphery... they're shows that focus primarily on non-superhero characters in a superhero world. And then you have crappy crap like Gotham which is just crap with a capital crap.

But this... this looks like a way to TRULY translate comic books to live action, because you have the time to tell a larger story and fully develop the hero, the villain and the supporting cast, with movie-worthy cinematography and fight choreography. I feel like this show might really change the way people look at superheroes in live action.

If only television shows were given the budget as films, then yes, but it's just not possible. Comic book adaptations would fit better as television, being that both are serialized. But Daredevil happens to fit television because he's a gritty, street level hero who is also a lawyer. Very doable in the confines of television.

But I agree this could be a game changer in terms of true quality superhero shows, which hasn't really happened yet. I enjoyed the first few seasons of Smallville, SHIELD I ain't crazy about, Agent Carter did nothing for me, I couldn't care less about Flash (which deserves better than a CW show) and Arrow, and Gotham is an intolerable piece of ****.

This show has much more going for it in terms of potential hence part of my excitement.

The real hunt begins Friday

I love your Avatar. Damn that is awesome. Hard to believe we are getting all this Marvel greatness ( Daredevil followed by Avengers Age of Ultron) all within a few weeks time.

I dont agree. The Flash is already a game changer, and I will honestly be surprised if Daredevil can keep up.

I know you don't watch it since you couldn't care less, so you shouldn't be saying things like this. Its far from just a typical CW show. Thats absolutely what I would say about Arrow… but not The Flash surprisingly.

I've seen episodes of both and while the Flash is better, they both share the same problems. This Netflix deal is unparalleled. Daredevil will have no problem keeping up, in fact it's gonna be streets ahead, especially with Defenders coming along and the rest of the MCU as a foundation.

I like Flash, but I wouldn't be surprised if Daredevil blows it out of the water.

Besides Jesse L. Martin and Tom Cavanaugh, the entire Flash cast is poor acting-wise. The entire cast of Daredevil are good actors. D'Onofrio can act circles around anybody on the CW.

Judging by the reviews, Daredevil is a game changer. There isn't much that differentiates Flash from SHIELD with the introduction of Inhumans.

Yeah, good point. The budget is really the issue, but I think that with heroes like Daredevil and especially the Punisher, this approach can really work.

Also, always good to hear someone call Gotham a piece of sh**. :woot: That show is the worst of the worst.

As a fan of the Flash what game has it changed exactly? It's a villain of the week formulaic genre show. It is no different to many shows that have come before it. The only difference is it's the Flash and his Rogues. I see little difference between the Flash, Arrow, Smallville and even shows like Buffy.

Yeah, I like The Flash a lot but it's far from a game changer. I really dig it, but they've stuck to the freak-of-the-week formula and continue to throw in cheesy soap opera drama to appeal to the teeny bopper crowd. The acting ranges from very good to VERY bad. Pretty much everyone on Daredevil is a top-notch actor.

Nice.

From the Reddit AMA...
Their pet peeves on the set?
Charlie Cox: There was a big bald guy on the set that had really bad breath. It's weird, I feel like I can smell it now.

Vincent D'Onofrio: Little red outfits.
Literally ROFLOL. :funny:

Daredevil will rock, but Flash will always be y favorite live action superhero series. That show is almost movie quality. Heck, I prefer it to many actual superhero movie. Don't trash talk shows you don't watch.

Lol Flash is cool but it most definitely not movie quality.

I regularly watch the Flash and I find it to range between mediocre and decent. Nothing about it says movie quality to me.

Agree to disagree then. I love the Flash, and I know Im gonna love Daredevil. We are so lucky as comic book geeks to have so many great shows and movies to enjoy.

Well at least there is something we can ALL agree on... It's gonna be better than Arrow.

I love The Flash. Almost every episode there's something that I can't believe I'm seeing in live action, but I think Daredevil will absolutely blow it out of the water in terms of quality story-telling and action.

I never liked the idea of a Flash live-action TV show. Things like SHIELD, Green Arrow, Daredevil are made for TV. In my eyes Flash is a movie-only caliber character and once we actually see him in the movies I think people's perceptions will change about the show. Not that everyone is just gonna start disliking it, but it will start to look more and more like a CW show in comparison.

But back to Daredevil. I hope the show sets some things up for the future Netflix shows.

Hahaha yeah, that's a given. Because at the very least, we might get a cameo from Tony Stark instead of a lame Tony Stark ripoff.

The Flash is awesome, I will be ecstatic if Daredevil is even 2/3rd as good as that.

Yeah I really like The Flash but I feel like this is going to blow it out of the water.

And I'll be disappointed if it isn't at least 5 times as good.

And as I said I like the Flash. But everything suggests this should far exceed it, in my opinion anyway.

Right now no CBTV is even worth telling my friends who aren't comic books fans about them. However I'm hoping to sit down on friday start binging Daredevil and I want it to make me go straight to facebook and start telling loads of my mates to watch it.

If it's as good as i'm hoping it might even convince my mate who pretty much only likes extremely high quality shows, the Wire, Sopranons, GoT, Breaking Bad etc to watch it.

Yeah I think that's it. TV has gotten to the point where some shows (Breaking Bad, GoT, The Wire) have surpassed most films in terms of quality. But superhero TV shows aren't there yet. However, this one might be the one to do it.
