so you only read superheroe comics?

Nah, I think Taskmaster and Agent X are very interesting.

hmm, then you've probally missed out on a lot of really good stuff because of this.

A lot of good "writing" maybe.

Well, yeah. What good is a character in a costume with superpowers if they have nothing good to do with them?

Semantics.

I'm talking Y: The Last Man, The Walking Dead, etc.

I have decent balance though. I dislike all the "regular" heroes and I also dislike most of the cosmic beings. One is not powerful enough, the other is ridiculously powerful. A hero with a decent power levle and a good writer is perfect.

I think Y:The Last Man is pretty good and I'm getting into Fables. But I do tend to stick to the superhero books, yes.

I...I...just can't wrap my brain around that way of thinking. I've seen people follow characters and I've seen people follow the writer, i've seen people follow the artist, i've even seen people follow the company who published it, but never the powers.

I mean, you wouldn't want to read a powerful, emotional, ground breaking story, just because the character doesn't have any powers?

I guess I do follow a character: Colossus and a company: Marvel.

It's not like I'll read anything with cool powers; there needs to be a balance of interesting characters(personality + ability), a good writer, and I'm willing to put up with a mediocre artist if everything else is in order.

For emotional, groundbreaking stories; I read actual books. Books I don't have to wait 30 days for the next chapter.

Wow. You have no idea just what comics are capable of then do you?

I won't disagree that I'm not utilizing them to their fullest potential. That's why I'm starting to branch off into the less "super" books like some of the Vertigo titles. You gotta remember, the X-Men are what sucked me into comics and I'll be an X-fan forever, and right now the X-books are FAR from literary masterpieces :(

Comics rule my life. The Phoenix Saga, the death of Elektra, Typhoid Mary, and Catwoman are my favorites.

I've been a reader all my life. I've read plenty of novels, works of great literature, whatever. But none of them compare to comics in my opinion. What the medium is capable of. I'm not talking Spandex and capes. I'm talking stuff that takes sequential art, and produces' a master piece. I'm talking about Gaimen's Sandman, Craig Thompson's Blankets, I'm talking Concrete and Watchmen. The perfect melding of pictures and words, to tell a story you can't get anywhere else. Theres far more to this bastardized art form than super powers and camp. I just wish people would stop looking down on this medium as pure escapist fantasy when it's so much more than that.

Just look in Eli's recommendations thread. Theres far more stuff in there.

If you're going to check out Sandman, i'd start with Endless Knights. Gives you a run down on Dream and his family, the Endless in the form of one shots. Great stuff.

I expected more out of Watchmen.

A lot of people tend to let the hype get to them. I've found that it's a lot better on future readings. You start to notice stuff you didn't see before. Makes the story become more alive.

It's definately good to see another side of comic books but a good ol' "cape and spandex" story is definately what the doctor ordered sometimes.

Well yeah, superhero comics is the bread and butter of the medium. But it's always good to break up the flying around saving the day stuff with something with a little more depth. Not saying that superhero comcis don't have depth, but they do tend to be a bit shallow from time to time.

Now that we got that squared away, why don't you try out Daredevil.

Haha, back to square one. Any particular number I should take a look at first? If I do end up enjoying the book, it'll be for literary purpses only; as Matt's character and powers couldn't be any more opposite of what I'd usually be into.

I know I am. I can't wait to read them, plus they got a new artist. I was very thrilled with the last one.

Well, you could go back to Bendis' run on the book. The whole things collected in trades and Hardcovers. It's good. You could also start with Brubakers run, which began with issue 82. All you need to know is that Matt was outed by the tabloids, and was captured by the feds and is being held in Rikers island for trial. Everything else will pretty much be explained.
