DC Relaunching Everything? - Part 9

But even DC's lower tier books have had some great jems like Lemire's Frankenstein and Animal Man, Snyder's Swamp Thing, Fialkov's I, Vampire, DiDio's O.M.A.C., Robinson's the Shade, DnA's Resurrection Man, and Williams' Batwoman. But what puts DC on top in terms of quality IMO, is that DC's top tier books have overall been pretty effing good with the exceptions of the inconsistent Superman, the Michael Bay-esque Justice League (which has improved dramatically over the first arc), and Tony Daniel's Detective Comics.
Yeah, but OMAC's been canceled, Resurrection Man isn't nearly as good as books like X-Factor in neither art nor writing, and the way it's been selling, Batwoman is almost not second tier anymore.

I will say, by and large DC's main books are better. Marvel's gotten very inconsistent with Avengers, Iron Man, and Thor. (and I haven't really liked Spider-Man since before OMD. :o)

O.M.A.C. hasn't been cancelled.........in my heart at least :csad:, I personally like Resurrection Man and X-Factor the same, and Batwoman is sooooooooooo second tier.

Resurrection Man has gotten progressively worse for me...to the point I don't even want to buy it anymore.

No, no, she is. Like I said, her sales have been so good I just didn't even think to include her as such. I mean, even in April, the only second tier characters to outsell her were GL: New Guardians and Nightwing. It's pretty impressive accomplishment.

I've been liking Resurrection Man. Mitch's search for answers about his identity is interesting.

The character that will change sexualities will be a male character and it will happen in June.

I dunno. I liked the concept. I liked the first four or five issues. They had a pretty cool 70s horror/thriller vibe going on with it.

But recently there's just seem to be meandering rather really advancing the story in any meander way.

I dunno, I seem to be getting kind of cantankerous with a lot of DC titles. Resurrection Man, Nightwing, GL: New Guardians (plus some more) are all titles every but me seem to like. :9

I try not to vent since it's the Internet and all, but Didio's recent "revelation" has me frustrated.

What I read: “We're improving the comics industry by providing better representation for [insert underrepresented group here]s in our comics!”

When I read in between the lines: “We're not creative enough to make a new character that both represents this group and that people would want to read about on a monthly basis, so let's just change one of our current characters to appease this group and call it a day.”

The urge to diversify doesn't bother me. I encourage it with my patronage when I see it done right, which- unfortunately- isn't common. It's the message that minorities can't hang with the Big Boys without some tawdry attempt at affirmative action that bugs me. These characters we know and love became household names because they were compelling. If they really wanted to fix this problem, they'd make new characters worthy of attention based on their own merits.

Instead, it's 2012, and the industry still relies on bad attempts at relevancy to sell comics. Come on, guys, seriously? You're not building rockets here.

Yep, this is basically just DC desperately begging to be noticed with a publicity stunt now that they're not dominating the sales charts quite so hard.

It's a copy and paste of what they did with Batwoman back during 52.

But at least they somewhat created a new character with Batwoman. Here they're taking a character that we all know and probably love and completely changing him.

At least they just told the story and then threw a bunch of media coverage on it afterward. This time they're actually making a media event out of it. Whatever happens, it will never live up to this amount of hype because, frankly, a character's being gay isn't even that big a deal in comics at this point.

That too.

There's hype over this?

What the mainstream media decides to cover is so dumb.

They could be talking about the growing popularity and success of Image's unique business model. Or how comics are quickly becoming idea-farms for major production companies and movie studios with the success of Kick-Ass, Walking Dead, etc. Or cover some of the actually socio-politically daring and inventive storytelling that happens all the time in comics.

Instead they get excited over Captain America "dying", Spider-Man meeting Barack Obama, and a C-List gay character's marriage (which, again, while it may be the current taboo thing politically right now, doesn't even comic close to what's transpired in comics this far).

It's pretty terrible. And really makes you wonder what legitimately important political and social stories they fail to cover in favor of the basest of topics for its empty entertainment value.

Its like The Goon #39. Which makes that book even funnier considering it came out only a few weeks ago. And it makes the comics industry that much more sad and borderline pathetic, screaming, begging and pleading for mainstream media acceptance.

The concept of Northstar marrying his boyfriend is a rather good one. The ultimate problem about this is that it's ****ing Northstar. Nobody cares about Northstar. Most people have never even heard of Northstar except us uber-nerds. And even then, he's not worth this much promotion.

I think that supporting same sex marriage is an important issue that deserves to be promoted personally. It's great of Marvel to want to do something so pro lgbt and while Northstar is kind of a relatively unknown character its still a wonderful thing for Marvel to do with the character :)

O.M.A.C. hasn't been cancelled.........in my heart at least :csad:

:csad:

It was too fun to last

I personally like Resurrection Man and X-Factor the same, and Batwoman is sooooooooooo second tier.

I wouldn't call Batwoman second tier personally Hippie hunter I think its the best most high quality comic book DC be publishing right now

It's great to have a comic book with an openly lesbian lead and Kate, Maggie and Sune are a great example of how to write lesbian characters well

I'm digging X Factor too. Speaking of gay marriage I'm kind of dissapointed that Rictor and Shatterstar aren't the first ones to be getting hitched

Batwoman's book may be great and the character may be great, but Batwoman in terms of hierarchy is a second tier character. The Batwoman book is a second tier book. It's a great second tier book with high quality, but it is still a second tier book.

But its still a great comic book which is the important thing :)

Flash was pretty neat this week :)

It looks like Hartley is going to be becoming the Pied Piper again so I'm hoping he and Barry will team up and maybe become friends like he and Wally were

And Grodd was fab though i was dissapointed by his lack of combat spoon :(

Well she's not top tier, that goes to Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Flash and at a push, Aquaman.

But being second tier is nothing to be ashamed of, considering it houses the likes of Nightwing and others.

I think he meant that she's not good enough to be 2nd tier. :o
