DC to "Rebirth" in June - Part 1

What's been people's thoughts on Cyborg: Rebirth? I'm wanting to like it but it just doesn't seem to be quality work. It's been lazy.

Interested to see what others think.

I didn't care for it before Rebirth, and this just feels like more of the same. I don't know why but it bugs me that a tech character like Cyborg HAS to deal with tech problems. It's just too obvious and boring. I read Rebirth and issue 1, and seeing that it is pretty much just following what was going on in his previous series, I decided to drop it. It's just not doing it for me.

I have so many ideas for Cyborg, good ones, that it makes me sad I don't write comics for a living.

This is what Geoff Johns must have felt like before he revamped Green Lantern.

Hah! I think about stuff like that all the time. Mostly with Marvel since their comics have been crap for a long time.

I was expecting some new series announcements from the "What's Next" Panel. Hopefully there's some coming before the weekend is done, because as great as the Batwoman solo news is, I'll be pretty bummed if that's all they unveil.

There's still another DC panel (Meet the Publishers) at 4PM EST. Though, I just read that there's only three new titles for Wave 2 (JLA, Batwoman and Super Sons) because they don't want to rush things. But who knows...

That's disappointing if true. The press release made it sound like there would be more than just one new series announced. JLA and Super Sons were announced back with Wave 1 and all the important info on JLA was released before the convention even started.

That's what I'm going with. I think it's smart not to necessarily go buckwild with new additions so soon after getting the bulk of things established. We've got three new books coming, plus WildStorm is being re-established, I think that's good enough at the moment.

Since I'm already reading so many DC titles, I'm glad they're going easy with introducing new books. I'll probably check out all three of the announced titles.

Just some thoughts on the books I've been reading:

Midnighter and Apollo: Bless this title and Orlando, it was so good. It's exactly what I feel DC needs and obviously fills the gap left by Midnighter's solo. I would rather these characters stay in the DC universe and not get segregated into a WildStorm universe. That being said, I wish DC would also put an effort into characters with diverse gender expression. I love Midnighter and Apollo and all, but given their histories as Batman and Superman amalgams they are both typically hyper-masculine. At least sexuality is explored and hopefully they get an ongoing eventually (hopefully a rebirth launch).

Green Lanterns: I've resigned to the fact that this won't be the best book ever written and the green lantern mythos might not be for me, but I at least like Jessica and Baz enough to keep reading every two weeks.

Night of the Monster Men: The book doesn't reinvent the Batbooks but I think it serves the purpose of letting the regular creative teams on these books recharge for their next sets of stories. The monsters are pretty gruesome which is kinda fun, but, like, where's this going?

Justice League: Really great art and the book is finally developing interpersonal relationships within the team. I'd be down for a Barry/Jessica ship. The fear stuff feels pretty derivative, especially since we just saw the Gothams deal with it in Batman.

Teen Titans: It was a fine setup, but it felt like the book skimped on content. Issue #1 hopefully will be a little better developed. Too bad the artist is leaving after the first issue, the art was a great fit.

I feel like Green Lanterns is the opposite of most DC properties. Batman, Supes, and Hal are so borderline perfect but Jessica and Simon just kind of spend a lot of time screwing up then acting vulnerable I like them but they are pretty weak lanterns tbh.

They're new and bad lanterns, and that's why I like them. As someone stumbling through life, I relate to them lol.

I get you. I like to relate to the characters too. But I also love the Hal/Bruce/Supes huge badass splash pages. I guess I'm conflicted. Lol.

Actually, no one is as cool with splash pages as Hal. The oath helps in that regard.

I find Green Lanterns, like a lot of comics these days, is really abusing the internal monologues. They're being used to tell, rather than show, everything in the book.

It really kills me how basically every book on the shelf now starts every single issue with "My name is so and so, let me hold your hand through the next 22 pages."

I read the first GL by Johns omnibus this year (or last year, can't remember) and really loved it... But goddamn, virtually every issue begins with exactly what you're saying. "My name is Hal Jordan. I'm the Green Lantern of Sector blah blah blah".

We get it.

Ya it's too heavy handed in Green Lanterns.

I think the internal monologue is well done in Nightwing, though.

:lmao::lmao::lmao: That's a stroke of brilliance, Saint.

Sure. I have no problem with internal monologue; it's an important device of modern comics. Green Lanterns just happens to be using it both excessively and ineffectually.

Already hyped for that pre-WW mini.

This week's issues of Deathstroke and GLC were pretty great. Vendetti is definitely delivering an epic conclusion to the "Sinestro's Law" arc and I can't wait to see what Priest does with the Slade/Damian pairing.
