Some information on Deadpool merch being released by Marvel around the films release and Marvels new marketing focus on more adult characters.

Marvel has announced its merchandising and retail plans for its adult-oriented characters, including Daredevil, The Punisher, Jessica Jones and Deadpool. The marketing strategy is specially designed to target older fans who enjoy Marvel’s Netflix series, and who are looking forward to the upcoming R-rated Deadpool movie.

The program features an array of merchandise, from apparel to collectibles and action figures, including offerings from Diamond Select, Funko, Sideshow, Kotobukiya, NECA, Hasbro, Hot Wheels, Mad Engine, C-Life, Hybrid, Freeze, Fifth Sun, Silver Buffalo and Bioworld.

Beginning in January, Target will feature a Funko Display spotlighting Daredevil, the Punisher, and Deadpool bobbleheads. In February, Hot Topic is launching a Deadpool campaign. Other retailers including Walmart, JCPenney, Spencer’s, Party City, and Kohl’s will also provide in-store and online support. Amazon will expand on its toy and apparel offerings for the characters and CafePress is launching a dedicated Jessica Jones shop offering unique merchandise for both men and women.

“Our goal is to open our deep vault of characters and explore all opportunities to drive incremental revenue that extends beyond our core franchises and extends our reach to new consumer segments,” said Paul Gitter, senior vice president, licensing, Marvel at Disney Consumer Products in a press release. “The excitement that is brewing across the board from not just fans, but also the licensees and retailers, is overwhelming and we are looking forward to seeing the reaction to this awesome product lineup.”

It's interesting that DP is seemingly exempt from the X-Men and FF merch ban

glad to hear it tho
maybe it means we actually get a deadpool collector corps box for february!

Yeah, I'm stoked to see Marvel is doing the opposite of what people thought would happen and put out even more merch alongside the film. Cool thing is that the film is identical to the comics from the suit to the logo, so I'm sure Marvel will benefit quite a bit.

Funny that a plot line in the comics right now is that Deadpool merch is so lucrative that it helps fund the Avengers haha. On top of the merch DP has like what 6 books coming out between now and the film? Marvel wants that Deadpool money and isn't being shy about it.

They know his cult standing and penchant for random humor, which is a thing now.

Well maybe because its the first Deadpool film ever? And that they already made film tie-in merchandises for X-Men/Fantastic Four before like way back in the 2000s.

They had X-Men merch before the MCU was a thing. It kind of stopped after that (Spider-Man never stopped because Marvel made 100% of the profits). But Marvel just made a deal to let Fox make an X-Men TV Show. That tells me there's a change in thinking, so making merchandise (which they split the profits 50/50, iirc) makes a lot of sense as a win-win.

Marvel has majority share of Merch based on X-Men movies and Fox a minority share, so Marvel would make more money from it. And Marvel profits 100% from merch based on X-Men comics, they just choose not to.

They'll continue to do Deadpool merch (based on comics) but I doubt there'll be any based on the movie which is a shame for 1/6 figure and statue collectors who want a figure or statue of movie Deadpool

Typical would the word I use.

We are getting Deadpool merch across all stores platforms during the films release, multiple comic books to coincide and re releases of video games. This hasn't happened with a Fox owned character since Origins and before the Disney deal.

We also don't know the details of Deadpools merch deal. Deadpool was not at Fox when they got the X-Men rights. Obviously Marvel has felt differently about Deadpool then the other Fox properties for quite sometime. He could just sell more or there could be more to it.

Whatever the case, Disney wants to market him with their other Marvel properties and more then the other Fox characters.

The Marvel TV show deal probably helped a lot. But personally, I think Marvel is being more generous to Fox's Deadpool since its the first one while X-Men/Fantastic Four already had box-office success in the past. It would be interesting to see if X-Men: Apocalypse, Gambit and Wolverine get merchandises from Marvel.

Apocalypse is getting merchandise through FOX's deal with M&M Mars. From the press release:

M&M'S Brand plans to leverage the partnership with a full 360-degree campaign including retail displays and packaging; digital and out-of-home media; TV and in-cinema advertising; consumer promotions; public relations; and social media content. M&M'S World® and My M&M'S® also will support the partnership with themed merchandise and special blends of candy featuring icons from the film.

As to why Marvel appears to be playing favorites with Deadpool my guess is A) like Spidey, Pool's merchandising rights are worth more than his live action rights, B) The character doesn't really fit in either Marvel's cinematic or television strategy and C) His "straight from the comics" costuming allows Disney Consumer Products to put product on the shelves that matches the character onscreen without cutting a check to FOX.

Is that considered merchandise or promotional material? My understanding is there's technically a difference. For example, Happy Meal toys were apparently considered promotional material in the past.

I read the press release as actual retail merchandise available for sale as opposed to give aways and the like. We shall see. With Marvel and FOX now best buds it wouldn't surprise me if the merchandising restrictions for the X-Men series were loosened.

Cool

That was all happening before the movie and before he was a 'fox character' though (origins wouldn't count), so it's pretty much business as usual.
If they flood stores with merch based on the movie that'll be something but continuing with comic based merch would've happened with or without the movie.

With their track record they likely had a discussion about blacklisting him in light of the movie but decided that Deadpool sells so well that the income is more important than taking fruitless shots at Fox.

Is that considered merchandise or promotional material?

It's obviously promotional.

Toys, clothing, collectibles, videogames ect is Merchandise while magazine covers, consumable product-tie-ins, posters ect are promotional and the M&M thing fits into food brand tie-in

I'm well aware he's had tons of merch. I've been saying that for years with you and countless others debating against me for whatever reason. His diamond toys sell better then any other Marvel character. The point right now is it's not stopping or decreasing as we near the film, it's increasing.

The games that have been off the market are now back extremely close to the films release. They are allowing, supporting and expanding his promotional materials right now. That's not business as usual when Fox releases a film and you should be aware of that of all people. Mainstream stores are launching official Deadpool campaigns to coincide with the film for crying out loud.

Are you referring to the 2013 Deadpool game?

allowing and supporting Deadpool merch is business as usual. Them expanding his merch isn't but making Deadpool stuff is, they didn't go from nothing to loads they went from plenty to more.

This situation isn't like X-Men Apocalypse where-in they'd go from making next to nothing to making lots

No ****. Why are you acting like I don't know this.

The point is that they are not shutting it off. That's the "business as usual" attitude. If you don't think Wolverine sells at all your crazy. So why is Deadpool different?
Are you referring to the 2013 Deadpool game?

Yeah, that was taken down along with X-Men and Spider-Man games. But Deadpool just got a remastered addition and was brought back to digital sales.

It's great they haven't ceased making Deadpool merch and better that they're increasing it and that is indeed different from their usual response to a new Fox movie but they'd be fools to stop selling Deadpool merch and they know that.

My point is it's not like they went from making nothing of Deadpool to making loads because of the movie which would be the case with X-Men. By business as usual I mean they carrying on with a current seller rather than starting up one from essentially scratch

Also everything they're doing/done with Deadpool is in-house and not in conjunction with Fox. They're taking advantage of the movie hype and brand awareness to sell comic-based Deadpool (which is fine and smart) but they haven't announced any Deadpool movie stuff, which means nothing has changed in regards to Fox/Marvel movie merchandise or even comic Merch since Deadpool was a presence already

All that has changed is they went from making a certain number of Deadpool merchandise to a certain number more.

Disney are launching new Deadpool merch campaigns because of the film. X-Men doesn't get that and neither does F4. That's a change as far as these characters go. Which is why even BC is saying...

It’s also notable that Deadpool has managed to escape the licensing embargo that certain other Fox movie-licenses have fallen foul of.

This is a new license deal...
Marvel have lined up licenses with Diamond Select, Funko, Sideshow, Kotobukiya, NECA, Mad Engine, C-Life, Hybrid, Freeze, Fifth Sun, Silver Buffalo and Bioworld with Hasbro adding Marvel Legends collector figures and Hot Wheels adding collectible die-cast vehicles next year.
They didn't need to push Deadpool more then they already were but they are making the effort because a film is being released.

Movie merch or not, this doesn't happen. That's a change. You also have not seen everything they plan on releasing. I'm sure X-Men fans would love to walk into Walmart, target or Hot topic and see a campaign in support of the film regardless if it's movie merch. They don't get that.

Despite a partnership on at least two new X-Men TV shows and X-Men: Apocalypse receiving a preferred trailer placement on Episode 7, some folks will never stop clinging to the idea that Disney/Marvel is picking on poor widdle FOX.

Promotional material, IMO.

Apparently in your mind, Disney making smart business decisions equates to them taking "fruitless shots" at Fox. Fascinating.

Why can't this be a real thing? Why???
