Atlus has announced the downloadable content schedule for Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker following its May 5 North American release.
Every add-on will come in the form of a “Free Battle,” which winning will provide “great results” for your party. All of these battles scale incrementally with your protagonist’s leel, so don’t expect them to be easy ones.
Here’s the schedule:
May 5

  • Beginner’s Brawl (free) – This is the one Free Battle that won’t scale with level, so make sure to tackle it early on. The enemies are a little on the weak side, but can still pack a punch if you’re not careful. Defeating them will earn you some quick Macca (demonic currency) to blow at the Demon Auction and get your team started off right.
  • Macca Makes an Escape ($0.99/CA$1.49) – This battle poses a chase scenario. Demons are fleeing with their pockets stuffed with Macca, and it will be up to the player to run them down and beat the payout out of them. The demons are carrying three times the usual amount of Macca, and even though they’re fleeing, they’ll put up a good fight if you catch them.
May 12

  • Lost Demon Rescue (free) – A persuadable demon is caught in the middle of two hordes. If you can protect the demon and survive the onslaught, the demon will join your party! Use it to bolster your ranks or keep it for fusion fodder. (Not to mention that some of the demons you’re up against have useful skills to crack!)
  • All Skills Must Go! ($0.99/CA$1.49) – Scattered around the battlefield are memory sticks loaded with powerful skills for your party. But the demons around have their eyes on them too, and will try and abscond with the memory sticks. This is one situation when you’re going to want to make sure to use non-combat skills that slow down enemies and/or speed up your party, because nothing is as infuriating as watching a Moh Shuvuu fly off with a powerful healing skill.
  • Let the Demons Grow ($0.99/CA$1.49) – This is an old-fashioned free-for-all battle. These demons are loaded with extra experience, so systematically pick them off to reap EXP rewards and level your entire party.
May 19

  • Addonetarium ($0.99/CA$1.49) – This battle is for higher-level characters, but is hugely beneficial towards the middle of the game when you can start implementing add-ons to your fusion. Basically, the add-ons give the fused demon a specific bonus, and can mean the difference between an average demon and all-powerful killing machine.
Yesterday, NIS America announced it’s bringing Devil Survivor 2 to Europe this fall.

When the battle begins, you’ll position your team on the battle map, and once an enemy is within range, you can make your move. The demons and skills you choose will affect your strategy, and you can gain an extra turn if you manage to strike the enemy’s weak point.

Devil Survivor 2 : A Solid Bit of Demon Creation in the Palm of Your Hand

Posted May 04, 2015

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker is an updated version of Devil Survivor 2 originally released for the Nintendo 3DS in 2012. Record Breaker goes beyond being a remastered edition or director’s cut and provides a second campaign that promises to deliver 30 hours of additional gameplay. This time you follow up your ordeal with the Septentriones to take on the Triangulum.
Read more of Rob Lashley's Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 A Solid Bit of Demon Creation in the Palm of Your Hand.
If this is the first time you have played a Shin Megami Tensei game, there are some familiar tropes present. Most notably, the world has been invaded with demons that can be captured and used with the help of technology. In the Devil Survivor series, people in the world are able to summon demons through their cellphones with the help of an app.
Shin1.jpg

You start off Record Breaker as the protagonist and quickly join up with your school mates Io and Daichi. After some teenage squeals at the prospect of going to see a prominent J-Pop band, you head to the city center for a concert. That’s when the events from the past seem to start happening. From this point you’ll start to seek out a paramilitary organization dressed in yellow known as the JP (pronounced gyps) that you have previously worked with and who specialize in stopping invading demon forces.
Regardless of whether you have played the original DeSu2 you can skip over the Septentriones arc that took place in the original game and receive a brief synopsis about what took place. This synopsis does a good job bringing you up to speed and from this point you can immediately start on the new Triangulum storyline.
DeSu2 is a tactical RPG with turn-based combat that takes place on isometric battlefields delineated by a square grid. As you progress through the game you will be able to capture and buy demons. Different types of demons have their own unique skills, strengths, and weaknesses. Some demons will posses strong ice based skills but will be weak to fire. Others might be strong against physical damage but weak to most magical attacks. These strengths and weaknesses can make for interesting and difficult match ups as you move through the game. You will need to grow a large stable of demons as you advance that provide you a wealth of options to draw from.
Shin2.jpg

Human characters do not start the game off with skills. They must learn them and that doesn’t happen through leveling up. They do this through Skill Cracking. At the beginning of a battle you will be able to select a party leader and a list of available skills that can be learned will pop up. You can then select a skill and it will tell you what demon on the battlefield you will have to defeat to learn that skill. Each party can only select one skill to crack per battle.
Once a Skill Crack is chosen, only the party making the selection can learn the skill by defeating the demon. Everyone in the party will learn the skill, however, so if you split them up and place them in different groups later they will all maintain it.
One of the quickest ways to gather new demons for your cause is through the auction house. There are two different types of auctions. One is the standard auction and the second is the special auction. Special auctions are rare but allow you to purchase powerful demons, or some that are bargain priced. Because they are demons and not the friendliest sort, demons may still extort you for additional money. Apparently if you give in and pay their extorted fee they could theoretically give you an additional item, but that never happened for me.
Shin5.jpg

There is also another way to acquire demons besides capturing and buying them. You can create them. This is done through fusion at the Cathedral of Shadows which is accessible through the game options UI. You will fuse demons and place abilities from the parent demon into the new demon. This will allow you to create some of the most powerful hybrid demons in the game. You can also bolt on even more skills at the time of creation with items called addons.
Fans of both tactical RPGs and anime will find something to enjoy here. The characters are well drawn, if not overly endowed for school age, and the voice acting is a nice touch. I particularly liked the allegory of being able to summon demons through your mobile device and the dangers of technology. The UI is nicely done and captures the feel of an early smartphone as if it was on your 3DS.

  • GAMEPLAY: 8 – Tactical RPG that involves buying and fusing demons. The story plays out like a well known anime.
  • VISUALS AND SOUND: 7 – A few well drawn characters, albeit some border on the lewd, with decent voice acting. Atmospheric isometric battlefield maps are well done. Characters on the tactical map don’t really stand out as special.
  • POLISH: 8 – On version 1.1 the game played bug free. The voice acting was far superior than other recent Japanese handheld remakes (FF Class Zero).
  • LONGEVITY: 7 – You can play through the original and then have another 30 hours with the new Triangulum story.
  • VALUE: 7 – $49.99 for a remake? Sure there are some new features but it’s still a remake. This one is a little on the pricey side.
Final Score : 7.4

Pros
Deep strategy elements to demon combat
Demon fusing system
Interesting, if not entirely original, story
Cons
A bit pricey for a remake of a 3DS title
Steep difficulty curve forces you to grind early

Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker – A Fantastic “What If” Story. May 4, 2015 . 12:33pm

The setup for Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker is that in this version of the story the 14 protagonists were able to set aside all their differences
and band together instead of separating into 3 different factions.

There are two kinds of people that will pick up Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker: those that played the original DS version released in 2012 and those who haven’t. Let’s get the latter out of the way first. If you’ve never played the original Nintendo DS game and want to know if it’s worth picking up this enhanced version on 3DS instead, the answer is yes. Buy it. Buy it at launch and get some cool goodies; buy it whenever Atlus has one of their many great eShop sales; buy it later on Amazon on the cheap—it doesn’t matter. Just buy this version and get the most out of Devil Survivor 2. This is the better version of an already great game.

Now, with that out of the way, we can tackle the returnees that may be interested in the new Triangulum arc of the game. Are the new story arc and enhancements to the game really worth shelling out 50 big ones?

The setup for Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker is that in this version of the story the 14 protagonists were able to set aside all their differences and band together instead of separating into 3 different factions. As one faction they were able to kill Polaris without suffering any major casualties. Afterwards, Alcor the Anguished One takes over Polaris’ throne and becomes the new Administrator, overseeing the universe and watching mankind’s progress. Alcor’s first act as the new Administrator is to regress the world back to how it was before the 7-Day Trial began—bringing back everything swallowed by the void and all the lives lost. This new reality is one where humanity can finally reach its unseen potential, and where humans don’t have to fear being eradicated by The Administrators. Fate, however, is cruel, particularly if you’re a protagonist in a Shin Megami Tensei game.

At times, the story in Record Breaker reminded me a lot of the two Persona 2 games: Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment. The start of Record Breaker is probably where the resemblance is the strongest as the Hero is the only one who can remember the past reality where they fought demons. Everyone else has been reset and is blissfully ignorant of the life-or-death crisis they once faced. Throughout your journey you meet up with all the previous characters and are able to reawaken their memories and enlist their help. This is one of the more fun aspects of the Triangulum arc, as you are able to pretty much use every character you want, regardless of alliances. Everyone is on your side this time, and you don’t have to worry about anyone leaving or dying.

The whole group stays together for the duration of the story, too, and there’s no punishment for missing something or not raising their FATE rank enough. Everyone is here to stay. Well, everyone but two actually, as Alcor is MIA, and Yamato Hotsuin seems not to even exist anymore, almost like he was wiped clean from reality and replaced by a new character—Miyako Hotsuin—who now leads JP’s instead.

There’s a part of me that feels I liked the new Triangulum arc more than the Septentrion arc, which is the original Devil Survivor 2 story. What could have easily been a simple rehash of the original story with just new invaders really becomes something far more ambitious. It’s a crazy ride with a few great plot twists here and there. I don’t want to give it all away, but let’s just say the Triangulum are only the beginning, and that the plot quickly shifts gears to something greater. There are even three different endings to the new arc, and I honestly liked all of them—each one felt satisfying to me. It took somewhere around 37 hours to complete my play-through of just the Triangulum arc (Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker contains both stories) although I did end up taking the longest route and spent more time than I would want to admit in The Cathedral of Shadows (I was trying to make all my favorites demons, okay).

My ballpark estimate is that most people should probably get around 30 hours sunk into this story. Overall, it’s a generous length for an extra story, and covers a lot of ground, with some real fun moments with the cast, especially while watching characters interact with other characters they barely got to talk to in the previous story, or seeing how their relationships have generally changed in this new reality. For example, the Hero, Daichi, and Io are all old friends who’ve known each other for years already in this world.

Other features to note include the new easier difficulty, Blessed, that will make the game accessible to people that are more interested in the story or just don’t have the luxury of being able to spend too much time on games. The original difficulty returns as well, under the name Apocalypse, and you can change between the two freely whenever you want. There is no penalty for choosing easy, so you won’t miss anything for using Blessed either. Meanwhile, aside from the two difficulty options and the Triangulum arc, there’s another great new feature: the new voice-acting. The game is almost 100% fully-voiced, and the only non-voiced portions I noticed are when you’re in a battle, and that’s usually only 1 or 2 sentences that provide vague hints on how to beat the boss. It really is an impressive sized dub, so you’re getting a lot of quantity, although the quality is a bit uneven.

Now, I don’t mean to say that the dubbing is bad. I just felt some actors weren’t the best fit for their characters. Overall, though, this is good work, and after a while the more awkward performances did start to click with me. Joe’s voice, for example, was one that struck me as way too young sounding when I started playing, but over time I came to appreciate how well his actor was able to pull off Joe’s lame jokes. That said, I could never get over how Jungo sounded, no matter how much time passed. It just did not work for me. The silver lining, though, is that there are some absolutely great performances in here, and honestly, I thought they outweighed the more awkward ones. Daichi’s actor is phenomenal. He really gets the character down to a tee, and may just be the best performance in the game. Fumi also sounds great and equally really got her character down. I also thought the actors for Alcor and Ronaldo were pretty close to character and sounded fine as well. As expected, there is no option for Japanese voices, although there is an option to turn off the voice acting entirely if you would rather play the game without voices.

So, was Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker worth the 3-year wait? Ultimately, that will depend on how much of a fan you are of the original game. If a well-written “What if” story that reunites the cast excites you, you’re in for a treat. Most of the other changes just really streamline the game and help it fit in better with other modern Nintendo 3DS titles out now. At its core, Record Breaker is still obviously a Nintendo DS game with a few new bells and whistles. There’s no question that this is the superior version when compared to its original DS release, though, and to be entirely honest, I found the Triangulum arc a better addition than the 8th Day added in Devil Survivor Overclocked. Overall, but the upgrade will ultimately appeal the most to those that love the characters and story of the original.

Food for Thought:

1. Just like with Devil Survivor Overclocked, the original 6-character limit is kept. If you’re a person who loves to use your real name when playing these kinds of games and also happens to have a name that’s longer than 6 characters like I do—tough luck. I ended up naming the hero Hibiki Kuze—the name the anime adaption used for him—because of this.

2. Another frustrating aspect retained from the Nintendo DS era is the lack of a fast-forward function. Now, you do get to speed up the dialogue like you can in visual novels and games such as Zero Escape but there exists no option to do so in the battles. It’s not like the fight animations take that long, but nowadays I’ve just been so spoiled by games like Fire Emblem: Awakening and Bravely Default where the pace doesn’t have to be slowed down to a crawl. Call me impatient if you want, but after the first 2 or 3 enemy turns I really don’t care anymore. Sitting through 6 or 7 enemy battles clustered together back-to-back with no fast-forward on the battle animations is ridiculous.

3. You start the Triangulum arc at level 20 and the Hero has 20 points to freely allocate to whatever stats you like. The 3 starting demons you get this time are Bai Suzhen, Dionysus, and Sarasvati. Most of the features like The Devil Auction, The Cathedral of Shadows, and The Demon Compendium, are very quickly made available soon after the start. Most of the end game boss fights see you fighting against demons with Levels that reach the mid-60s.

4. So uh … pro-tip, when you start the game, crank the voice volume up in the options. Whoever did the audio mixing really did a pretty terrible job. For the first 20 minutes (before I could access the menu) I couldn’t hear anything anyone was saying because of the LOUD MUSIC. It was like the default sound option was voices on “whispering” and music on “front row concert seats”. Save yourself the trouble and remember to adjust the audio settings as soon as you can.

Etrian Mystery Dungeon and Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker dated for Europe
Published 17 mins ago. 0 comments.
Etrian in September, followed by Devil Survivor in October.

EMD-Dated-EU.jpg

Etrian Mystery Dungeon will launch for 3DS in Europe on September 11, and Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker will follow on October 30, NIS America announced.
The games will be available both at retail and digitally.
Find fact sheets for each below.

Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker
About
The world of Record Breaker is on the brink of non-existence. Just before the heralding of the apocalypse, when life was normal, some thrill-seekers were registering on a website that promised to deliver fake videos of their friends being killed. As people wondered what these videos could mean, an invasion began and humanity was forced to face a struggle to survive in an unprecedented catastrophe. For the main character and his friends, they stand up for humanity when the very same website uploads an application on their cell phones, summoning demons. From there, newly minted demon tamers begin the fight to survive and save the future of mankind, but the protagonist’s decisions aren’t without consequences. What he chooses may save the lives of his friends, or seal their fate.
Key Features

  • Tactical Combat with a Side of Demon Fusion – The elements that make the Devil Survivor series great are back and better than ever with robust, turn-based strategic combat. Since the game is part of the Shin Megami Tensei franchise, fusing demons together to form a stronger army is back as a core mechanic!
  • Choose Your Own Fate – The line between life and death is razor-thin in Record Breaker. Actions have their consequences, and in the wake of the apocalypse, a wrong choice can result in the permanent death of a character. Multiple endings present the challenge of making all the right choices at the right time.
  • Tons of Extra Content – Record Breaker expands on the original Devil Survivor 2 by nearly doubling the amount of storyline for a total of more than 100 hours of strategic game play and consuming plot, with the additional mystery of Miyako Hotsuin to unravel.
  • New Personalities to Discover – For the first time, Devil Survivor 2 is getting fully voiced English story dialogue. The voiced dialogue in both the new content and the original story gives added depth in bringing the game’s characters to life from ominous beginning to dramatic end.
Etrian Mystery Dungeon
About
There’s no hand-holding in Etrian Mystery Dungeon. The action/turn based combat means that battling monsters is not just about using the right skills, but becomes an elegant Pas de Quatre of strategic positioning. Players form their parties with familiar Etrian Odyssey classes, such as Landsknecht and Runemaster, customize individuals using Etrian-style skill trees, and then take up to four members into the dungeons. Always randomized with various levels and paths, the dungeons require plenty of exploration, not to mention the incredible loot rewards — just be wary of what waits among the deepest depths…
Key Features

  • Infinite Dungeons to Explore – Etrian Mystery Dungeon incorporates the random map feature, which changes the floor terrain each time a player enters the dungeon. This core mechanic, inherited from the Mystery Dungeon series, challenges the players with a new maze and stronger monsters every time, offering them unlimited replayability!
  • Attention to Detail – The Etrian Odyssey tradition of party customization is in full effect for Etrian Mystery Dungeon. After the first journey as a Landsknecht, players can freely choose their party of 4 from up to 10 different class types. While each class has a unique skill set of its own, characters can also unlock new skills through skill trees.
  • Not Your Grandfather’s Combat – The unique perspective in Etrian Mystery Dungeon means that special care will have to be given when selecting party members and upgrading their abilities. With dungeons chock full of enemies and all the loot and money collected at stake, being 100 percent certain in your party’s abilities is crucial for making it out alive.

So, we're doing a little clean up around here, specifically on threads that are being ran without activity. I'm throwing out some feeler posts to see if anyone is actually paying attention to some of these threads. I'll leave this out there for a day or two, if there's no response from anyone other than the OP, I'm going to go ahead and close this thread.

that'll be a shame it's a good game I know alot people want to get this dirt cheap later across the web. but here on this forum peeps have to be interested . I'll under stand

Last edited:
Sure, I do understand that. But this thread has been going on for nearly a year now with you as the sole poster, which is the case for all the other threads I posted that message in. I know some lurk, that's why I'm not just outright closing them.

We'll see what happens. If no one responds here and this gets closed, you could start a general Shin Megami Tensei thread or something in multiplat where you can share this. You are, of course, always welcome to post any deals on this in the 3DS thread as well.

Last edited:
Well, three days and no response. I think it's safe to lock it down. On the chance that you are an infrequent poster and happen to log in and see this closed and want to continue following, PM me and we'll see what we can do. I'm also going to do the same for the Persona Q thread since I think it's safe to assume the two threads share a fanbase and are in the same situation (there's also nothing that's been posted in that thread directly about Persona Q in quite a long time).

Suggestion to OP: As I mentioned above, a dedicated thread to Shin Megami Tensei will be helpful, but in the case of this game in particular, I would honestly just keep news about it to the 3DS thread.
